The University of Alabama board of trustees are RETURNING the 21.5 MILLION it received from a top donor, the most its ever gotten, after he called on students to BOYCOTT the school over the state's new abortion ban!!

70 y/o Liberal Billionaire, Hugh F. Culverhouse, a real estate investor and lawyer pledged the multi millions in September but recently urged students to boycott the school

Hours later, they announced they were considering giving back his money as Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey signed the most stringent abortion law in the US that ultimately bans all abortions even from incest and rape and make it a FELONY where a doctor performing it could get up to 99 years in the slammer

Alabama is part of a wave of conservative statse that seek to mount new legal challenges to Roe V Wade

Culverhouse says he has no doubt Alabama is retaliating over his call for the boycott, the University denies it and called it an "ongoing dispute" over how the gift was handled.

The University claims it recommended the return before his boycott call and that donors "may not dictate University administration" and that Culverhouse made numerous demands regarding the operation of the school

He called them LIARS over the account but acknowledges there were some disagreements over the handling of the gift as he told President Stuart Bell that the law school should admit more students and his donation was to fund scholarships for that

He thought the matter was resolved but clearly it hadn't.

The 14 members who voted on it, including Governor Kay Ivey, decided to return the money as Culverhouse was stunned by it but said "You probably shouldn't put a living person's name on a building, because at some point they might get fed up and start talking"

Would you ever support a business that was anti-abortion?

Way to put your money where your mouth is.

But also $22M to a university is like, guess we'll have to wait till next month to replace that building that went up in 2016 that we have been needing to bulldoze because it's not gaudy enough.

Why would a school accept a huge donation from someone who tried to dictate rules and then urge students to boycott. Im honestly thinking the abortion thing was a scapegoat for the guy.

While its true universities generally arent hurting for money, its stupid as fuck to act like 22 mil is a drop in the bucket even for a big school like UA

Especially considering Alabama is ranked so goddamn low in terms of education.

~$22m at once is a fairly sizable gift to a university.

I mean I cant knock them for sticking to their principles, but...

I enjoy shitting on the South even while growing up in the South, but Bama has been a top 100 public university even before their recent obsession for anybody who manages to not fuck up the ACT/SAT.

So top 100 is nowhere near elite but it's also not trash, and that 22 million is a drop in the bucket considering all of the the construction they've been doing over the past ~12 years, revenue from the football team, and all of the students they've been leeching on considering enrollment has increased by ~10k in less than 10 years

And nobody is trying to stick it to anybody considering his father's name is still on the College of Business. They're returning Jr's shit because

I've always been pro-choice, and even ignoring allegiance to the university since I graduated from there, what school on earth would be dumb enough to keep money from someone who says

"I will not allow my family's name to be associated with an educational system that advocates a state law which discriminates against women, disregards established Federal law and violates our Constitution," Culverhouse said.

He repeated his call for students to protest and "reconsider their educational options in Alabama." He also urged out-of-state businesses to "consider the consequences" of working in Alabama.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/07/us/university-alabama-abortion-donation/index.html

If you think any school regardless of their stance on literally anything would bend over for someone for 22 million with him telling students to attend another school, you might be too dumb to apply even to Alabama
