I'm not sure why she felt the world needed to know that. HPV can cause cancer wherever it infects, I thought this was well known by pretty much everyone.

She just declared that she's had anal sex with him. Cool story bro.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if people who know HPV can cause cervical cancer are a minority, let alone people who know it can cause cancer in other areas.

"I know there are people who are ashamed. You have cancer! Do you have to then also feel ashamed? Like you did something bad, you know, because it took up residence in your anus? she said. I mean, come on, really. Theres enough on your plate."

Did you read the story? His is throat cancer caused by HPV...

Yes. His throat cancer was over a decade ago, caused by HPV. She announced that her anal cancer was caused by the same strain of HPV he had.

Without reading further that raises an interesting question of how he got the same strain in his throat. I mean, we can guess, but the question remains.

If we got it in middle school we'd essentially knock the disease right out, but some christians have moral problems with basic biology.

The HPV vaccine is now recommended for everyone up to age 45. Previously it was limited to age 21 for men and 26 for women. The current version of the vaccine, Gardasil 9, protects against 9 strains of HPV representing about 90% of all cancers caused by HPV. If you've already been infected with one strain it won't cure you but will still protect you against the other variants.

The vaccine is given as a series of 3 shots taken over a 6 month period. If you live in the US and have medical insurance, vaccines of all types are usually free.

While you're at it, make sure to get your Hepatitis A & B vaccines. Hepatitis A is spread by eating contaminated food or water, while B is transmitted by exposure to blood or body fluids. And make sure you're up to date on your Td (Tetanus & diphtheria) or Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria & pertussis) shots. Tetanus, or lockjaw, is a nasty disease caused by a bacteria found almost everywhere.

I wonder sometimes if I should get the HPV vaccine. I've only been with and will almost certainly only ever be with one person. But then there's rape. Suppose I should bring it up to my doctor since I'm going in to get my titers checked for measles anyway.

Here in the UK it's become pretty much routine to offer girls the HPV vaccine, usually done through their secondary school at age 12, without charge - the NHS usually absorb all the costs of any kind of medical treatment for anyone 16 or under, or up to 19 if still in full-time education. (The routine alters slightly for trans people, of course, but usually if you have a vag you'll be offered it whatever your gender identity).

Most people in this country with vaginas at least know HPV can cause cervical cancer, & we get routinely tested for it during Pap smears (we just call them "smear tests" here) every 3 to 5 years (they alter the frequency of reminders based on age as it's a lot less likely you'll get certain kinds of gynaecological cancers after menopause). We don't have to pay for those either. There are reasons our childhood and maternal mortality rates are so much lower than those in the US, and this is one of them. :(
