never heard of it before i looked it up just now

it's derived from a doner, but I'm not convinced that the donair found in Canada is the same thing as the Turkish doner

Shawarma and greek Gyro's are "supposedly" the same thing, but in practice they are not the same as what a Donair place gives you in Edmonton. Similar concept though.
