I'm one of the 14 Skyward Sword votes.

Best visually, great music, most polish, great characters, good memories of a good time in my life. I got over the motion controls pretty quickly, though I never stopped bitching about my sword being perpendicular to my wiimote half the time.

Easily MM for me. I remember getting that game for Christmas. It was the one game I really wanted. Did so much in that game when I first got it. Loved it so much back then. Still love it now. I was super excited when the DS version came out.

OoT was the one that really got me into the series. I played the others. But that was probably the first one I actually beat. Then I went back to the others...

It was a super fun game. I really like it. People always complained about it. But I never had an issue with it, tbh... I also really liked the boss Koloktos.

I'm surprised OoT isn't winning the poll.

It's a hard choice, but the first game isn't really an option. OoT has always been the sentimental favorite for me, because nothing really compares to playing that for the first time. But BotW is as close as that can come playing a new game as an adult, plus it's just so much better objectively.

Zelda II isnt the worst. The DS games, LA, and OOA/OOS are all worse by light years. AoL just needs a few changes and it can go from not that good to great. Its literally just too hard.

Nope. I dont remember controls being that bad. Which is one of the same arguments used for SS. But it was probably just something to blame. They werent the best, but not that bad. And they were actually fun. And had stuff to do. Zelda II was pretty much boring nearly the while time I had it. And I went in wanting to play and finish it. I really did. But no matter how many times I try, I cant have fun.

Zelda II is fun, I like it better than the first game.

The DS games are weak but I don't really pin that entirely on the controls (well, except the dreadful flute stuff in Spirit Tracks). They just felt kind of "off" in general.

Well I wouldnt count it against the first one since... well its the first. Its also very open so you can make progress in different ways. In LA you have to follow a very specific path and do annoying tedious tasks in the overworld. Like trying to find bananas for an hour, so fun.

I mean, you could slow it down significantly. Though, that changed it the remake. You could still slow it down. Just not as much. And you have you chances to redo. Like all the time. Its not like they were counting how often you use the Song of Time, IIRC.

I had to give my vote to Twilight Princess. The world felt huge and looked great. The environment felt like it had a LOT of story behind all of it. I loved NES Zelda, I enjoyed SNES Zelda, I played Ocarina religiously and I sunk the most hours into Windwaker, but Twilight Princess is my favorite out of all of them. Personally, I never got to experience anything passed that title so maybe someday I might enjoy Breath of the Wild more if I ever get a Switch.

I'm gonna be biased since I just did another playthough of "A Link to the Past" yesterday, but I voted for that. Objectively, it took everything that worked from the original Zelda, made it better, and tossed out the things that didn't work. On a personal level, as much as I liked Zelda I and II, I didn't have a NES of my own as a kid, although most of my friends did so I just played Nintendo at their places. I got an SNES for Christmas in 1992, when I was in 6th grade. I had to have a pretty major operation a few months later, and my parents asked me what game I wanted to help cheer me up during recovery. I asked for Zelda. After a week in the hospital, I FINALLY got to go home to my new game and spent the following months of my recovery playing the hell out of it, so I have a pretty huge emotional connection to it.

I never really liked the first one. I grew up with 2 and then later was blown away by 3, and then later again OoT. 1 was always kind of meh compared to the others.

(I am however proud to be able to say that my 7yo nephew has managed to beat Zelda 1 (something I failed to do) with no assistance from me, and is currently working his way through the second quest.)

Zelda I and Metroid I are the kind of games where the context of that era help significantly. ALttP and Super Metroid both took what worked in the originals and fixed what didn't. Zelda was especially hindered by wonky translations that made some secrets pretty hard to decipher without a guide, and a lot came down to bomb every wall and try to burn every bush.
