Board 8 > How would you rank the Star Wars trilogies?

I realize the last 1/3 of the newest trilogy isnt out yet, but 2/3 is enough to judge it.

The PT is the worst acted and directed of the bunch, but the unintentional humor and memes have really elevated its status in the last decade. It may go down as the ultimate definition of "so bad it's good". I still probably take it last, but TLJ left a bad taste in my mouth, so I guess it's up in the air and Ep IX could be the deciding factor.

OT destroys both.

I think the Force Awakens is Very Good, despite a few criticisms I have, and I really enjoyed the Luke/Kylo Ren/Rey portions of TLJ, so even if the rest of TLJ is pretty poorly done, it's still better than the prequels.

For real. The romanticization of the prequels after TLJ came out is mind-boggling. 1 and 2 just aren't good movies. I enjoy 3.

If Episode 9 blows me away I might have the Sequel Trilogy first but it's highly unlikely.

TLJ and TFA just aren't good movies. They're less bad than Episode 1 and 2 but I'll take one enjoyable movie over 0 for now.

ST can't rightly be rated until it's over but right now it's looking like OT > ST > PT, not that it's a particularly hot take.

I haven't seen the prequels in years and only once.

But what's been left in my mind of it is mostly the aesthetics and worldbuilding. And for now that creates a more positive impression in my mind than any sequel movie.

The prequels at least had a vision. The sequels are nothing more than a cynical cash grab. And a bad one at that.

TLJ and TFA are both better than 3

Firstly, 3 centralizes Hayden (obviously) who is not a good actor

TLJ and TFA are like, fairly well-acted and visually on a level way way beyond 3. TLJ is also a more surprising watch (inevitably since 3 is a prequel) and has better dialogue. It's really not close to me, the ST are just better-made movies. That's before we even get into how badly 3's CGI has aged (like the entire PT) and how all three of the prequels would be utterly ripped to shreds if held to the exacting, precise standards to which TFA and TLJ have been held. Every line of dialogue in those two movies are used as sticks to beat them with, whereas the prequel trilogy, including 3, are drowning in bad lines, bad writing and bad effects at every turn.

None of the prequels are good. Episode III became extremely overrated by virtue of not being as bad as the first two.

I prefer my gritty, dingy sets and practical effects, so I still think ANH is the best looking movie of the franchise.

I meant even of its time. Like I was never wowed by the visuals of the PT even as a kid - maybe the first time I saw Coruscant. Perhaps because so much of it was CGI, perhaps I just didn't really absorb visual splendor the same way back then, who knows.

But TLJ especially has gorgeous shots and set design that the prequels imo just don't have. This isn't like a "PS4 has better graphics than PS1" discussion to me, it's more about...filmmaking skill, or intent, or ambition, or something like that.

I guess it's summed up by what yo said about sets but imo the prequels - even with modern tech - would never pull off a scene like the lightspeed ram in terms of visuals. The PT just didn't have that same... panache.

I recently finished watching all of them for the first time. Well other than Ep 1&2 which I saw ages ago and mostly forgot, but close enough.

Im actually OT > PT > ST.

The PT has a lot of issues, but the things I enjoyed from it I like way more than anything from the ST so far. TLJ is my pick for worst movie of the bunch easily. Pretty much hated all of it for the most part and all of the new characters in the ST so far are boring, bad or basically thrown away by writing that doesnt seem to have any care or direction imo

The relative love and forgiveness the prequel trilogy has got in recent years is kind of fascinating - I sort of get it since the newer Star Wars films give less reason to be bitter about them and some people just enjoyed them and feel more like they can speak up about it but god, wow, I just do not understand, they were so bad

I would say TLJ and TFA are better acted but worse written. Good acting can only help bad writing so much. Also RotS is poorly acted in an enjoyable kinda way, whereas TFA and TLJ are "well acted" in a way that puts them as basically diet variations of your typical blockbusters. Yeah there's some cute banter in there but I have like 50 Marvel movies that do that way better. RotS which is just a more distinctive experience. I feel like I'd be losing something if I hadn't seen RotS, whereas TFA and TLJ are just run of the mill blockbuster action movies that don't really do much of note whatsoever.

Also don't really think TLJ is a more "surprising watch" for whatever that actually means-- no meaningful expectations are really subverted in that movie. Little details were different but as far as the direction of the overarching plot nothing particularly unexpected happened.

By writing I mostly meant the plot. I dunno, I guess if you count the dialogue it's closer to a push but I feel like the plot of RotS is significantly less meandering and accomplishes what it sets out to do a lot more effectively.

Im in the minority here for sure, but I thought The Last Jedi had the worst writing in the series. It didnt have the hilariously bad/meme level writing some of the PT had, but it had a lot of awful scenes that were bad entirely because the script was

For the record I also very recently finished Rogue One & Solo which I also enjoyed more than The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi.

6 > 5 > 7 > 4 > 8 > Rogue One > 3 > 1 > 2 > Solo

Oh, not surprised I forgot then. I guess all weve really been getting is Kylo Ren: The Only Knight Of Ren. I dont think I even want to see the rest of them because Id currently rank Kylo as one of the worst characters in the series and the less of him the better

Not sure how popular this opinion is, but imo The Emperor is easily the best bad guy in the movies
