By rights it should've been the best console version. The Saturn had superior 2D sprite rendering and scaling to the PlayStation, which the Doom engine utilized instead of polygons.
The 32X version actually ran really well, but had awful music. There's no excuse for the Saturn version to run worse. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Copied to Clipboard!

The DOS version still remains the best DOOM. I'd argue that the Playstation version is probably the best original version. It had better visuals and a much better OST. Doom 64 is hugely underrated, although admittedly is a different game. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Saturn was a cool console that had little support. It was like a dumpster for shitty 3rd party games. Although, I had this helicopter game that was pretty fun.

It was victim to bad timing, strange hardware design and general distrust of Sega. But the hardware itself was basically tailor-made to be the best 2D system ever, and its huge supply of fighting games and SHMUPs are a testament to that fact. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Playstation Doom had it all, though. the music was cool but i loved the metal music more than the ambient psx/n64 stuff. Didnt have the same punch. the new DOOM game had a great mix of the two --- Gamertag: ALMIGHTY CHEEKS ... Copied to Clipboard!

I'm not sure which OST I like more.
PlayStation Doom's truly creepy ambient OST, lighting and general atmosphere made it a lot more of a "horror" game than the other versions. That carried over to Doom 64 as well. Honestly I think the SNES Doom's OST might actually be my favorite. It's so relentlessly bass-y with tons of reverb. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Apparently it's John Romero's fault. He insisted that the Saturn version not use any sort of hardware rendering because it could cause texture warping, even though the consequence of using software-based rendering had considerably more faults.
