20 y/o Self Confessed Shopaholic, Carisa Baker from Salt Lake City, Utah said she's made 3000 in a year just to DONATE her PLASMA to fund her retail therapy habit!!

She said she spent a year making a living by going to a clinic twice a week to donate her protein-rich liquid found in blood in exchange for cash to bankroll her shopping obsession.

The student and part time nanny makes $280 a month just from donating plasma as the Weber State University student told dailymail "I would absolutely recommend it to people who are short of cash and want to go shopping"

She said "I get $20 the first time and $50 the enxt time. It's just a little bit of extra money that i can spend that i don't feel i worked very hard for".

Plasma is the yellowish fluid in blood that remains after the white and red blood cells and platelets have been removed. It consists of water, salts, proteins and enzymes used in medicines that help people suffer from burns, shock, trauma and other medical emergencies.

Plasma collection is offered in payment in exchange

The communications major says she loves shopping as she spends 600 a month on clothes, shoes and make up.

When there's a discount or good deal, she jumps on it right away as she feels POWERFUL knowing she has money to buy whatever she wants!!

Donating blood takes an hour and half at BioLife Plasma and now her friends do it for the money..

As long as she eats protein and stay hydrated before the appointment, there's no health risks and her parents are fine with it..she'll be doing this for a LONG TIME as long as they pay her..

Actually not really that good money if they are all like this place https://www.biolifeplasma.com/us/#/donation-center?centerId=104

They say it takes about 2 hours, but I'm pretty sure the line makes it take a bit longer. That is $20 an hour if it's only 2...and I'm better it ends up being less then that (especially with travel time).

Depends what min wage is where you live, but....just about any job is more interesting then sitting around for 2 hours waiting or having your blood drawn. I mean, it's good to donate to actually help people, but it's not exactly a great way to make money.

It depends on you me size and other stuff. Mine is sometimes pretty quick. Also, the more you go, the more you make. There are rules where you can go twice a week, and have to have at least one day in between. And no more than twice in a 7 day period. But the one I go to has specials most months. And you get more the more you go. So, like the second time
Each week is more than the first. And then we also get bonuses the 6th, 7th, and 8th time we go in one month. But even then, its not bad. I just sit and watch anime for a little while. Making money for watching Hulu isnt bad...

As for travel time, it depends. For me, its nothing. I live right up the street. And first timers get like a big bonus. I made a lot the first month I did it. Its not enough to live on. But its definitely good to have the extra money when I need it.

Why would they ever include travel time in that time figure?

Apparently my veins are too tiny to donate anything more than single reds. I tried double reds and platelets and the machine kept beeping so they had to stop it.

Shrug time travel matters, you can get a min wage job right next to were you live usually....so yeah, if you drive/take a buss/walk etc 30 minutes each way, that is another hour factored in.

Need to determine how much per hour your actually making. If you get 30 the first time and 50 the second, the average is 40. If it takes 4 hours all together between travel, lines and actually having the blood drawn, that is really not worth it.

There are 3 different places here (thats including the one above), so some people do them almost every day to get the max amount. You also get a bonus $50 the first time you do it, or if you bring a friend (both the person doing it and the person bringing get $50). If you go 6 times a week (twice to each), you could literally pay your bills but I'm sure that is not good for you.

I believe they restrict it to once a month in Europe.

I can see it being worthwhile if you are just getting by and need more cash. For me it would take about 30-40 minutes of driving to get to the nearest place, then wait however long the wait is, then have the blood drawn, and then drive back.I would rather work fast food honestly then spend all that time for about the same amount of money.

In my state it's illegal to be paid money for this sort of thing. You can be given free food and gift cards and stuff, but never money.

A lot of them do certain kinds of cards. Like releasable gift cards that work like credit cards. So, that might be what they do...

Yeah. But thats why it depends on where you live. Like you could get a fast food job down the street. But I can sell plasma down the street, instead. Easier. And shorter hours. Plus, bonuses just for going. For the amount of time theyre there, they make between $30-$40 and hour. And the first month pays even more. But they only go like 12 hours a month. But it is nice pocket change.

WTF why is selling plasma for some extra cash a news story? I used to do this for about 2 years (until they wouldn't let me anymore)

It's not like she's in dire financial straits or anything.

I was wondering why it was a story as well. I posted about doing this myself about half a year ago...

To be fair, during those two hours, you can simply read a book or entertain yourself on your phone, which is all many people would be doing if they were home instead. It's more limited than most other home entertainment options, but not terribly boring.

Travel time is always important to consider in how worthwhile a moneymaking venture is. Working for 8 hours at a job that pays $30/hour but is two hours away (so 2 hours round trip) is actually a less efficient use of your time than working for 8 hours at a job that pays $23/hour but is only half an hour each way (1 hour round trip). In the former case, you effectively make $20/hour (to say nothing of the quality of life impacts of dedicating 12 hours of every day to work). In the latter case, you effectively make $20.44, plus have more free time.

It's completely illegal to compensate people for bodily fluids in Canada. Blood clinics will offer snacks to help donors recover, which could be seen as a form of compensation, but I think counting two oreos and a 40g bag of crackers to be "compensation" is a little absurd. There are a number of pushes to start compensating donors, though, since the supply from Canadian donors isn't enough to meet demands and we're having to buy it from the US anyway, eliminating any of the safety advantages of not compensating people.

I do stand corrected because I confirmed that you can sell plasma in California. My local area still won't pay money though.

I know one guy would actually work while there. He brought his laptop and stuff. And set up a little workstation where he was. Haha.

Yes, and Canadian law prohibits compensation in either case, as well as for any other fractions of whole blood. It also prohibits sperm donors from being paid, since semen is also a bodily fluid.
