Got mine ASAP after turning 16. In our area the lady that did the driving test was called RoboCop because she was so well robotic in her actions and voice and such. I'd say maybe 1 in 5, if even that high, 16 year olds actually passed with her the first time. I was the only one of my friends that passed first try.

I didn't get mine until I was 19. Saw no reason to get one until I had a car.

Though I have been driving since I was 14 on the farm and nearby back roads. Maybe to the gas station.

I got it when I turned 21. My mom was driving and picking me up from community college when I was 18-20. I didn't really mind at the time really because it felt like the same as High School. I had nowhere I really wanted to go.

But once I hit 21 and I got a job as well, it was unrealistic to have her chauffeur me around you know? So I just did it. Little did I know at the time that as soon as I got my license I was immediately responsible for buying my own gas, paying for my own groceries and clothes. It hit me hard in a sense that I had that "Oh ****, I think I'm officially an adult now" moment.

Failing my road test at the DMV shattered my confidence.

This, except I didn't even get that far. I failed the written test. It's been 6 years and I'm still too afraid to try again. I'm sure I'd fail again if I tried now because if I didn't pass it then, when the driver's ed shit was still fresh in my mind, how the fuck am I gonna pass it now?

You get a better set of questions, or you study a little more.

I drove without a license for 13 years. Got my permit when I was 16.
I was fortunately never pulled over during that time, and still retain a clean driving record.
I am genetically predisposed to being awake at night and taking a driver's test at 8am was never really high up on my to do list.

Also, to those of you who failed the written portion. You can study online. Also, if you've been on the road enough with someone else, most of the questions they ask you are pretty much common sense. If you can't pass the written test you probably shouldn't be on the road to begin with, for your safety, and more importantly, MY safety.

They ask questions in such a way that you're almost guaranteed to answer it wrong. I remember one question I had where a comma made the difference between a right and wrong answer.

One question I did get wrong (I still passed) was "If construction signs are up, but it's the middle of the night and nobody is around, do you still have to do what the signs say?"

Most of it really is common senses though.

At our DMV, we had one that was just known as "The bitch". Older woman who would fail people on the spot for various reasons. Not allowed, but would come up with something during the test to blame it as to why you failed. Almost 90% of people failed who had her.

I failed the 1st time because they got my named mixed up with another person. They used to use your first name and last letter initial to secure your spot (preinternet days). I was 930. He was 9. Failed me for being late.

She sat in the passenger seat the entire time bitching about wasting her time as I already failed. She waved her hand in some vague directions throughout to turn. Took off serious points for everything.

Eventually they fired her after so many years of complaints. She was there about 30 years.

My first written test in high school to get my learners permit, you had to get a 75% (out of 100 questions). I passed with 76%.

Then in segment 2 (which is the one you have to take in order to take the actual test) I passed flawlessly 100% on everything.

Then after a few years my learners permit expired and I had to take a written exam again, you could only get 10 wrong or something. I got 10 wrong lol.

Then I passed the actual drivers test pretty good.
