I had to get numerous leg and brain surgeries over the course of high school and was often on high dosage painkillers so I never was in any position to drive. Then when I was taking my graduation classes (those surgeries caused me to miss a lot of school and graduate two years late) my Grandpa was sick of having to drive me to and from school so he made me drive the car and a few months later I was able to take the test. I finally did it because of a combination of a girl I liked who needed moving help and my dad dying and leaving behind a van that proved quite helpful for that move (plus him dying meant me being able to drive was a considerable help for my mom). <cite>_AdjI_ posted [p:922235580] in How old we... I very nearly failed mine because of a few instances of missed shoulder checks, all of which were because I'd been paying good enough attention to the road around me to know that nobody was there. When I finished, he asked me if I'd had a license before because I had bad habits like I'd been driving for a while (I hadn't, but I had been biking for several years, which amounted to road experience), but I still feel like that was less "bad habits" and more a matter of already having the intuition and spatial awareness needed to cut some corners. I failed the first time because he wanted me to turn into a driveway and just said "turn left" as though I'd have the intuition to understand he wanted me to pull into someone's house. The second time I was failed for a better reason, that being that I fucked up the parallel park, but I went for a third test and he basically said what amounted to "oops, out of time" and didn't let me even take it.
