When you hear stuff like the role of Genie was built originally specifically with Robin Williams in mind, and there were quotes from back in the day like "if Robin doesn't want to do this role, we're fucked" and then you see the role by someone else, you kind of get an idea of what they mean. It sounds like Will Smith is doing an ok job, with the energy and such but the role really doesn't fit him. Stuff in Friend Like Me and really needs those goofy breakoffs from the song to do the silly voices, and I don't think Will is goofy enough to pull that off. but I guess we will see. Will's singing aside though, the songs sound pretty good on a grander level.

I'm dreading A Whole New World. At least Will Smith isn't involved in that one (unless they decided to go all out on fucking it up).

My guess is they'll have drained it of all emotion except sheer boredom.

I actually kinda like the new versions. Not as much as the originals, but I think the hate for them is overblown. Filling the shoes of Genie was gonna to be an impassable hurdle for anyone since the man he was designed for is no longer among the living. You cant make the movie without Genie though so anyone who got the role was always going to have it rough. The only other guy who probably couldve gotten the same or more hype than Will Smith imo is The Rock who was probably too busy being cast in billions of movies these days and also cant sing

The Rock as Maui was good, even his song, despite the fact he couldn't sing, he brought good energy to that song.

Yep, I really like the song enough to be a contender for my favorite Disney song. It was a good performance because of his energy and personality.

I would actually say, while not professionally level, Rock and Robin Williams could hit a note or two, which helped them in the long run

Will Smith is both no energy and not a good singer, at least for what the songs are demanding

Robin Williams wasn't a fantastic singer, but he could pull off the songs he was given pretty well. It's not in any way comparable to the awful droning Will Smith is doing. There's a clear difference between the one that's actually trying and the one that isn't.

Well, I don't think it's fair to say Will Smith isn't "trying." The problem is that those songs were made for Robin Williams, and he ain't Robin Williams. No one is.

I actually like parts of Will's Arabian Nights. He's VERY clearly not doing Willams' Arabic caricature voice, so he's allowed to do his own thing and add his own inflections. The others feel like a VERY deliberate attempt to not sound like the original to make the Genie feel not like Williams', and that unfortunately removes a LOT of inflection. Smith remains at the same, steady notes for quite a while whenever he does sing (which is rare, it's MOSTLY spoken, where the lack of overacting stands out even more). Adding in some of that sexy Disney live-action autotune and it feels like the safest versions of these songs you could make, and tremendously dull due to it that does no credit to even the potential Smith has to bring to the role.

But whoever wrote the line "Heard your princess is hot, where is she?" deserved to be fired. Just... ughhhh all the bad vibes.

The Rock can sing, at least well enough for the song he was given. Will Smith not so much.

Apparently the new Jasmine song is really good though, and Naomi Scott who plays her is the best thing in the movie.

This is just... I dunno. I like Will Smith a lot actually. He nails some parts of Friend Like Me, but some feels a bit neutered. I feel much of the same with Prince Ali too, and I feel like it might be better with he context of the visuals? But the brief scene they showed of Prince Ali just makes it seem more boring.

That's my issue with this movie. You need to go balls out crazy with this stuff when you have the Genie and magic. Make it outrageous cartoon shit to an extent. But it's actually pretty standard and boring stuff in the clip.

I don't even mind Will Smith's spin on the Genie either though. I think it's a rather fun rendition of the character. I just wish that they would have turned the character up a bit more, because there's a ton of fun to have with that which they just didn't seem like they wanted to explore. I speak on this just from the songs and the brief clips I saw though.

He does fine with Arabian Nights though.
