Haven't seen it but my dad was complaining that the movie ignores Tolkien's Catholic religious beliefs and acts like he was not religious at all. That might have been part of why some people didn't go to see it

I'm not even a fucking Christian but go ahead and pretend be ignorant of something most historians agree on about Tolkien

That's not the god damned point. I might not care that much but Christians do. A lot of them have always looked up to him as one of their ranks. And it's a common belief that his religious views are part of what inspired his writing. Lord of the rings is very allegorical to religion. If those Christians thought Hollywood was insulting his memory they would have boycotted the movie

It would be silly if the film ignores his Catholicism and I'm no Christian. Dude was so Catholic when his church started saying that mass in English, he would still loudly say it in Latin. Plus there's his discussions and all that with C.S. Lewis. Plus his works are so obviously inspired by his catholic beliefs.

As much as I love his work, a film about himself isn't very appealing to me anyway.

Part of that could be because Tolkien was a huge language dork.

As much as I love his work I've never been too interested in his life, or really any famous persons life. on top of that most bibliographies are over-dramatized and change so much stuff that they barely tell the real story. If I actually wanted to learn about Tolkien's life I'd read or watch a biography.
