This is what makes him an effective negotiator. You know that every line of that article is true. China knows it too. They'll fold after putting up enough of a fight to save face, as long as Trump offers them something that they can portray as a fair deal. Since all Trump wants is something he can portray as a well negotiated deal that makes him look smart and tough, they are all but bound to agree eventually.

Trump is quite popular in China because his bargaining style makes sense to the Chinese people - it's common in China.

And again, the proof of Trump being a great negotiator is how much he's gotten others to part with while giving them nothing of value in return. Useless seminars that taught you how to pay for more seminars, steaks from a man who eats them well done with ketchup, tacky hotels, worthless stocks in companies that lose money every single year, junk bonds, the list goes on. He has made a career out of selling others garbage and he's among the best at it.

Great negotiation skills by themselves won't necessarily make you rich. You need starting capital too. But there are people who start with capital and can't negotiate well. Like most of the Democrats in Congress.

Is there actually a rule that the Prime Minister has to be British? The Speaker of the House in the US does not have to be a member of the House and I don't think there's even a rule requiring the Speaker to be American. King Louis XVI's First Minister was Swiss, not French, I think.

So while not related to politics directly, the Cleveland NBA team announced the other day that they're eliminating their all female dance team in favor of a co-ed dance team, and adding another all male dance team (they already have one.) Thus, if you're male, you have three teams to try out for. If you're female, you have one. And it's co-ed.

They say they're being progressive.

I'm not sure I follow?

I did feel a little twinge of sympathy, though, just because of like a natural instinct or something I suppose. Seeing somebody break down live on camera is generally not a pleasant thing. But he's got a point, the fawning sadness in the media is bad and that "human level" question is even worse.

https://www.al.com/news/2019/05/marriage-licenses-end-in-alabama-whats-next-what-it-means-if-youre-getting-married.html

So, the Alabama Legislature, in what I am only able to understand is an attempt to solve the issue of Judges disregarding their duty by not providing marriage licenses, has passed a bill that does away with Judge-issued marriage licenses. The couple signs an affidavit, sends it to the judge (who is required by the bill to record it), and that's it. They're spouses under the law. No religious aspects (Current AL law requires marriages to be "solemnized" by e.g a Priest), minimal tests (Not related, not already married, minors need to be 16 or older and have parental permission), no bullshit.

Alabama appears to have stumbled its way into legitimately good policy out of ill intent. Good job.

If I'm going out of my way to find the negative then I would say that it doesn't sound that they have changed the "normal" marriage procedures, but merely added these extra, optional methods.

So most people will still get "real marriages" and the "other people" can get their legal equivalent.

At least that's how it reads to me, that this isn't replacing the existing procedures, just adding new ones.

At least that's how it reads to me, that this isn't replacing the existing procedures, just adding new ones.

The bill would also end the practice of requiring a marriage be solemnized by a minister or someone else licensed to perform a ceremony. Current law requires a minister, judge, retired judge or person otherwise authorized to perform a ceremony to sign the marriage license before it is recorded.

Under the new law, the affidavit and forms would constitute a legal marriage, as long as they are submitted within 30 days of being signed by the two parties.

The state shall have no requirement for any ceremony or proceeding and whether or not a ceremony proceeding is performed or not performed shall have no legal effect on the validity of the marriage, the law notes.

I mean yes. If you're religious, you can still go to the church, have your ceremony, etc etc. But legally speaking, they have absolutely dropped those requirements.

Yeah, it's this. It is to let homophobic judges who don't want to give gay couples marriage licences save face with a loophole instead of getting a judge that actually respects the ruling.

The legislation came in response to the Supreme Courts landmark 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. Some probate judges in Alabama quit issuing marriage licenses, citing their objections to being forced to sign licenses to same-sex couples.

It wasn't a landslide. They got 31% of the vote (only 4% more than Farage got last time despite the Tories collapsing), total pro-brexit vote was under 35%. The pro-remain vote was over 40%. This was a pretty good win for remain. The main frustration is that if Change UK hadn't run against the Lib Dems, there are FOUR brexit party seats that would have gone Lib Dem. The main takeaway from this election is that it is very important to not split the vote - a remain alliance, even if it was only Green+Lib Dem would have come first easily. But as a remainer I'll take this result, now to cancel brexit.

Anyway, since the EU election is incredibly important, here's how it went across the continent:

GUE-NGL (Left/Far-left, eurosceptic): 38 (-14)
S&D (Socialists&Social Democrats): 150 (-41)
Greens/EFA (Greens&Regionalists): 70 (+20)
ALDE (Liberals, eurofederalists): 107 (+40)
EPP (Centre-right): 179 (-43)
ECR (Conservatives, nationalists, eurosceptic): 58 (-12)
EFDD (Populists, eurosceptic): 56 (+8)
ENF (Nationalists, far-right): 58 (+21)

So all in all big gains for the liberals (Here liberal=centre, generally speaking), gains for the greens, and limited gains for the various right wing eurosceptic groups. Bad news for the establishment as the commission has been run by an EPP/S&D coalition since its formation and they lost their majority. Europe didn't really go left or right but fragmented in all directions, which may ultimately be good for democracy.
