She needed him to quit drinking, move up north, and turn into a husband. Thats what she wanted. He just isnt that and couldnt do it. She could probably call him selfish and shitty, but he never pretended he wasnt. Again, love was there and love persisted after the fact, but they just couldnt be together. Sounds like you needed this guy to be something he wasnt. And you can still love him for all his faults, but sometimes the faults are just too much. Be kind to yourself and think kindly of him.
