The Australian Koala Foundation says there are fewer than 80,000 koalas left in the wild.

Although 80,000 sounds like a lot, the foundation says these koalas are unlikely to produce a new generation.

'Functionally extinct' describes an animal population which has so few pairs that they are unlikely to produce a new generation.

It can also describe an animal which is breeding in such few numbers that they are more likely to become ill from disease.

Note that this isn't to say the species can't be saved. The Bald Eagle was in an even more precarious situation before the US Government stepped in.

But if left alone, the species is essentially doomed at this point.

Why are they unlikely to reproduce? Do they just naturally lack the strong instinct to mate? Or is it a case where deforestation and development is causing them to be spread too thin that enough of them can't find each other anymore? Or I guess a mixture of both, where they weren't really proactive about it before either but there were enough in close proximity that they still managed to do okay in spite of themselves, but now they're not so lucky.

Holy shit, I just read about Koalas.

They literally eat only eucalyptus, which has terrible nutritional content, so they're always sleepy from lack of nutrition.

And because eucalyptus is so tough, eventually their teeth wear out too much to eat, and they die of starvation.
