I don't own a cell phone, but I'm near a point where I'll have to get one. I'm looking at Verizon because our company deals with them and I can get a service discount. I just don't know how much phone I should get.

Probably everyone reading this has a phone and a plan, so let me know what your experience is. What is your typical data usage per month? Do I need a really good phone, or just good enough? Samsung, Apple, or something else?

Samsung.
Unlimited data plan of some sort. Phones aren't just phones, and I find it improbable that anyone with a smart phone will treat it as just a phone for very long once they figure out what all it can do.

And I didn't think it was possible for there to be someone that's a "new" cell phone user honestly.

Go to T-Mobile and get a free iPhone XR, then get unlimited data for like $70 a month.

I had a cell phone a long time ago because I had to. What's it been, ten years now? But not a smartphone.

Yeah I mean when they were just phones, plans mattered more. Now, I can't really fathom not having unlimited data. Phones are just too powerful, WiFi is too present in our society and having a smartphone is like having a miniature computer now.

I just recently changed plans from 1Gig to 4Gigs and I don't think I'll ever come close to reaching 4Gigs.

I would occasionally get close on 1Gig but honestly I don't watch youtube or streams when I'm ever out and about so it'll honestly never be a problem.

I guess if you constantly browsed twitter for tons of gifs and such as well that could be a problem but still. I'm just never really out enough where more than 2Gigs per month will ever be necessary.

I have a Pixel 3 and really like it.

I use around 500 MB a month, but I'm pretty careful about not downloading or browsing image-heavy stuff unless I'm on wifi.

WiFi being so present is why unlimited data isn't a must for me personally.

This topic is kind of interesting to me though, hard to imagine not having a smartphone in a society that has quite literally revolved around them for more than a decade.

I guess I just don't feel the price difference between having a cap or not having one is enough to warrant just not getting it. To be fair, it's still not a huge presence in rural America.

Yeah, I got a smartphone 5-ish years ago (had a flip phone before then) and I thought I was the last one.

I didn't want an electronic leash, I didn't have many people I needed to call (and when I did I could use a land line), and I didn't want to spend the money.

I'll post something here so long as the topic hasn't already purged. I'm going to find someone to bring with me so I don't buy garbage, hopefully do this tomorrow.

Smartphones are useful but overrated.

Samsungs are ok, but my next phone won't be one. I swear they intentionally slow down older phones, there is no reason my phone is as slow as it is.....I miss my windows phone to be honest, rarely gave me issues.

My s7 is still rolling pretty well.

We have an s5 that is just starting to slow and cede considerable battery life.

The Google Pixel 3a was just announced as a budget phone that's still suppose to be really good. So consider that if you're looking at phones.

Samsung loads their phones with so much bloat it's kinda ridiculous, and they stop supporting every phone after 2-3 years, so if you want something to last awhile, I'd look somewhere else.

Same. I'm honestly surprised how well it's holding up. Approaching two years old and it feels the same as day one.

If you aren't sure how much you will use your phone a lot of no-contract carriers can be had for as little as 15/month. You do have to pay for the phone out of pocket but if you are willing to buy a phone that is 1-2 model years behind the cost savings are significant.

I wound up waiting until today to get a cell phone. I went with an iPhone 8+, and an unlimited data plan through Verizon. My brother-in-law (sister's husband) went along to help explain the brands and the experiences. He likes his Samsung something-or-other, and it felt like he wanted to push me in that direction, but he described the iPhone as more user-friendly and better on security; for a neophyte like me, that sounded ideal.

I've set up a few features here and there. I still need to set up more things. Maybe this'll get more exciting once I've had more hands-on time.

How are you supposed to carry these things, anyway? My pockets aren't that deep.

but I see a few people every now and then with belt loop clip phone holders(Mostly older people).

I recently changed my plan to be the Verizon Unlimited plan for $60 (previously I had an older grandfathered in data plan) but I'm sticking with my S8 despite a slightly cracked screen because performance on it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse and I feel paying an extra $30-40 a month for a new phone would be a waste

If you're not used to having a smart phone, you could easily get away with an older model or one of the slightly lesser models. The free phones they offer don't even look bad.

Edit: I see you already got one. I just throw my phone in my pocket.

Subtle brag from Mr Money?
I have an IPhone 8S. They're pretty basic as a phone but with the app store they have potential to cover a lot of your needs like any smartphone really. If you don't plan on getting a ton of apps and making the most of it's memory and utility then I wouldn't recommend an IPhone. Though they are very easy to use especially if you're not familiar with smartphones.
