Not that long ago, I finished running a D&D style campaign set in the DC Universe with a small group of friends. It was extremely well-received and if two of the players were not moving away, the group would have continued. I've since yearned to DM a campaign again, and I find that I'm hesitant to run more things in my store outside of my work hours.

I thought that perhaps, given the nature of the board, there would be some folks interested in participating in an RPG here. I'm going to give some details on the nature of the campaign in the paragraph to follow, but if you're wondering about logistics, I would plan to run it weekly, and I would be looking at Wednesday nights as the target. As with most campaigns I would expect three hours sessions, maybe four. The number of players would need to be between 3 and 6 at the absolute largest. If there was a LOT of interest, I would actually consider running two campaigns, but I'm not even sure there's enough of an audience here to get 1 started, so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

My campaign uses an old, forgotten system called the DC Universe Roleplaying Game (or DCURPG). I've found that it works pretty comfortably, and all of the sourcebooks are free to download online nowadays, so you wouldn't have to worry too much about finding materials. All I'd really expect of a player is to be ready to take notes and update their character sheet as necessary. And, of course, you'd need dice (and you'd need to be honest about dice rolls). The campaign has a finite conclusion so this wouldn't drag out ad nauseum, but it's a fairly lengthy campaign, so it would be a commitment. My group ran about 14 months (with probably about 1 off-week every 5 weeks).

The story would take place in 1999 and be set in Gotham City during its absolute lowest point, and the party would be made up of players roleplaying as fledgling superheroes, vigilantes or antiheroes (this isn't a villains campaign). The campaign puts more of a premium on roleplaying, negotiation and exploration than combat, so if you're heavy into pure combat tabletops, this is not necessarily your jam. There are still plenty of opportunities for combat, but the campaign focuses more on decision-making and consequences.

In any event, I imagine this might be something no one here is interested in, but I thought I would give it a shot since Board 8 has always been a den of all things nerdy and awesome. If you've never played a tabletop RPG before, I think it would be a great opportunity to get started, and if you have, this will probably feel like a very different experience given the system and the setting!

If I can be some sort of animal / creature I'm in.

I realize 1999 Gotham City setting might be a bit of a stretch for that though!

In theory yes, not a problem. You'd have to be a talking animal of some sort.

I remember building and roleplaying Kirby in the Mutants and Masterminds system and not having any speech beyond a few basic words and sounds and still adding fun to the campaign with wild gestures and such. Speech is overrated.

(Admittedly, it probably wouldn't work well online, though! But comic book roleplaying + no speech made me think about it.)

This campaign is predicated on the notion of some conversation with characters, so there needs to be communication. Essentially, you can go Rocket Raccoon. Although, as you mention, a big piece of the fact that it's online is going to mean that it's not quite as easy to play a speechless character.

But I'm down to run it with an animal character for sure.

Yeah I'm definitely not arguing you should allow characters without speech, especially with a new group in an online setting. That would be fairly silly. I just wanted to post something irrelevant. I'll be on my way.

Now I gotta figure out if I want to use one of my characters I've already created and sort of morph them a bit more to fit the story / scenario or come up with something completely new. If you've got the sourcebooks to download, I'd love to check those out as well scarlet.

I'm very very fresh to D&D stuffs. Basically have only done 2 sessions so far with an old work buddy and his roommates but have been enjoying it quite a good amount. I'm definitely interested in doing more, especially considering the group I'm with right now is basically only playing once every 3 weeks lol.

I can definitely hook you up with the first sourcebook on Discord sometime today. Because we'd be doing a pretty customized character, we'd have to probably screw with the system a little bit, but I'll definitely help you work out the character so you don't have to fly blind. It's honestly one of the more fun parts.

War, Ermine, and I are all Eastern I'm pretty sure?

Counter-point to rolling - how often in real life sessions do you check on your players' dice rolls to make sure they're not lying?

I was playing in a campaign where some was getting way too many 18s and 19s and so another player started watching him and our DM eventually booted him from the group because they discovered he was lying quite often.

Maybe it's not a problem most of the time. I guess I never did at the table, so fair point.

Also, regarding dice roll shenanigans, there's always using Discord, making a server and adding a bot for specifically dice rolls. Of course, if you can get d20 working (as hombad mentioned) that's pretty good too.

My other point about dice is that I like collecting them and rolling them. The physical activity of it is one of the things I enjoy about RPG's. Not everyone is the same way, but I love rolling real dice vs typing a formula into a roller.

I also believe that, if you think somebody is lying, as a DM, you have ways of adjusting for it.

Until the school year ends, Monday-Wed are not good nights, if I'm expected to go 3-4 hours from 9pm.

Thursday is usually a climbing night, so RIGHT THIS MOMENT Friday is probably the best.

I think Monday would probably be best for me after the school year ends.

Actually, once next Fall hits, Fridays and Saturdays would be practically undoable (marching band season), but that's months from now, if I even do play in the group.

So I think, based on what I see here, I could run with this group on a Wednesday:

Ermine
Wickle
War
IfGodCouldDie

If I ran with Mondays, that would work for Han after the school year ends, and I know Ermine and Wickle can play that. Also IfGodCouldDie. What about you, War?

If it works for War, and Han's year-end isn't TOO far away, I would be happy to wait just a little bit to start the campaign. If not, I think I would probably pick up on Wednesdays still.

I will reiterate that I would also be more than willing to run two variations of it during the week if there are enough people interested because I think it would be awesome to get Han involved.
