Name one of his policies.

Medicare for all
More accessible (but not free) college
Basically every liberal social platform

He's not for medicare for all. He has soft support for eventually, one day, getting a public option. Policy wise he's been open lately about not having any yet. He says Dems focus too much on policy and should instead communicate general philosophy like Republicans.

Definitely don't agree with that.

And Democrats do not focus too much on policy.

My understanding is that he supports universal healthcare but wouldnt immediately eliminate private insurance entirely.

That's not what I disagree with.

Don't countries with universal health care also have available private health insurance?

Hes been trending upward as he gets more exposure though. Kinda the opposite of Beto and Harris.

I think Harris will see more support once the debates start, curious to see how Beto looks on stage.

Yes, but that's not really what you're asking.

In single-payer systems, like Canada, there is private health insurance but it doesn't compete with their national insurance. It's for supplemental coverage.

In multi-payer systems, like Switzerland, there are many competing health insurance companies, but they are heavily regulated with respect to what they can charge and what they must cover.

Actually not sure how it works in the UK. The NHS isn't technically an insurance system, so I bet you can buy private plans that 'compete' with NHS on services offered.

This is my exact thought. Curious how Pete does and how the candidates will interact. Also is Biden waiting until after the debates to announce hes running? I guess he doesnt need exposure and avoids a possible awkward conversation that could drag him down.

But if a candidate brings him up he wont be able to defend himself on the big stage

All I said was big media has been fawning over him. You're probably alone in thinking media coverage hasn't played a significant role in his (or any politician's) favorability. Relax.

I don't understand what you mean. If we moved to a single-payer system it would be foolish to try and remove private health insurance for multiple reasons.

It isn't single-payer if you have multiple insurance companies covering different groups of people. That would mean that there is more than a single payer.

If you want everyone to receive their insurance coverage through the government, then you need to remove the private insurance competitors, like other countries with single-payer do.

But even these countries have private health insurance, it just offers coverage which is supplemental to the basic coverage provided by the state.

You said yourself twice that private health insurance exists in single payer systems as supplemental insurance. So again if we moved to a single-payer system, it would be foolish to try and remove private health insurance for multiple reasons.

I'm not obsessed with having 100% single-payer, though. I care the most about cost of universal health care vs. cost now. And also, from what I understand seniors generally have Medicare + supplementary private insurance. Can't find any numbers on this, though.

If Biden doesn't end up running, which I still think is a real possibility at this point, I do think between the three of Beto/Buttigieg/Harris that Mayor Pete ends up getting the largest chunk of that support. A lot of the Biden supporters HAVE claimed that Sanders would be their number 2 pick according to polling, which really shows the power of name value, but I'm getting the feeling that Pete is starting really pulling away from the Beto/Harris pack.

Who know's though, it's incredibly early and all could immediately fizzle out and so much is going to depend on what happens in the debates and early elections in Iowa/NH/NV/SC before Super Tuesday. And if Pete doesn't win the nomination I do wonder if Sanders and his team, assuming they win, would be willing to extend an olive branch to the more establishment side and offer Pete the VP position. I think that the ticket of Sanders/Buttigeg would be very difficult for Trump to beat.

with respect to this conversation about employer sponsored health insurance and insurance on the marketplaces, those would need to end entirely

no M4A proposal outlaws private insurance overall, just private insurance that competes with Medicare

in saying that he doesn't want to 'eliminate private insurance immediately' what he means is that he would not end employer sponsored insurance, which means he doesn't support single payer.

no one wants to eliminate private insurance at all if you're going to count supplemental plans.

yeah, the medicare for all plans are essentially nothing like medicare as it exists now. it's best not to think of them together at all imho

Oh.

Yeah, health care being tied to your job is probably the worst part about our health care system right now.

I know it's early, but Bernie's already said on a few big platforms that his VP is going to be a progressive firebrand that is a woman and significantly younger than him. It seems he already has someone in mind and he's been a pretty loyal dude.
