Holy shit, wonder what the cause is exactly.

Large portions of it are definitely fucked at least. Remains to be seen how the main inside will fare.

Generally once the roof catches fire, you can't salvage much.

At least that as the rule of thumb of my local fire department 20 years ago.

Then again, most of those fires weren't on centuries-old global icons.

Apparently the fire was caused by restoration work being done to the roof

That contractor will never see work again, lol

But all jokes aside, this is heartbreaking. That building is like almost 1000 years old and a marvel of architecture, not to mention just a beautiful building outright. It's irreplaceable. :/

So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!

I was scared of the high ceiling. I remember looking up and seeing how high it was and having a mini panic attack. I don't like super high ceilings

Yeah I dunno.

It wouldn't be the same, but I'm sure they'd build something. Probably a memorial

The spire is completely engulfed. It's only a matter of time until it collapses, and it's all over from there.

The building is so historic and well-known that I don't think it's a question of whether they'll rebuild, though. It just wouldn't be Paris without Notre-Dame

No lie, my HS world history teacher was actually a retired history professor that took up teaching again when his daughter started school and he was one of the best teachers I ever had. I remember him saying that Notre Dame was his favorite building he had ever been to and went on an entire diatribe about the building when we got on the subject. I can only imagine the heartbreak for him. >_>

Damn, great history but it's just a building. Yes there's history, but here on CNN, people are acting like life is ending as we know it.

What's important is that there are no fatalities. I'm hearing burning parts of the cathedral have fallen on people. That's what Im worried about.

They can always rebuild or even build a tribute spot. Our buildings are not meant to be immortal.

"Act of God" is an actual term used in contracts and such to describe general uncontrollable circumstances with no precedent. It's usually a catchall, like "in case of fire, flood, tornado, hurricane, earthquake or acts of God."
