My wife and I have small locks of hair from both our cats weve had to put down. I plan on continuing that. To what end? I dont know. Maybe we will do something with them someday.

My first cat left hair everywhere so we were finding little Simbas for years.

Hmmm... I havent done anything yet because nothing had happened yet. Maybe I will, though. I could do hair. Or maybe get special collars made that I can keep later. Like they have collars. But theyre like these old ones theyve had for years. I could also just keep those, I guess. Its like a path of them now.

Not really. My sister had to put down two of her cats and both times she got a little plaque that has a picture of the cat and their paw print.

On a serious note, a couple of the places I take my kids hiking are popular dog walking trails, and one of them has a memorial tree. People hang ornaments and photos of their deceased dogs from the tree. It's bittersweet. Some people leave flowers or toys, and during the good weather months there's usually a sealed bin with dog treats for the living dogs visiting the tree.

I have a lock of fur and toe nail clippings from the dog the police let get killed 17 years ago in Holyoke MA. I was devastated because his collar broke and he ran off to a bar two blocks over and by the time I found out by calling the cops they told me he had jumped out the back window of their cruiser. How stupid are you to leave the window down for a 125 lb dog. I found his body the next morning up on I-91 (major interstate).

Just last year my two mini dachshunds died of old age at 14 & 17. I saved fur and nails from them too. I guess I will from now on.

We also have all the paperwork and collars from when we adopted them. We have a couple of other things of Grapes. Including her favorite toy: A broken part of a clothes hanger. Specifically the part that goes around the rod. So a plastic half circle.

She loved playing fetch with those.

I have my last dog's collar in addition to having saved the ashes from my cats and last dog. Then, of course, I have photos of my previous pets.

My dog had a stick; it was her favorite stick. It was a large chunk of manzanita wood we found when I was a little boy. She kept this stick with her for over 10 years. We even took it with us when we lived in germany, and brought it back to America. Even though she died 13 years ago, I still have that stick. My son likes to play with it now Its still too big for him to hold, but he likes to drag it around. He likes to see pictures of my dog and the stick

Just their collars. Toys, beds, bowls, they go to the next lucky customers. Ashes would be a bit much for me.

We've been offered ashes but I've always said no because individual cremation is a lot more expensive. And honestly, I don't even care what happens to my own ashes someday.

I wanted to with my dog. but i'm not old and she'll not be my last dog. and if I start i'll feel obliged to do it for every pet I ever have. and I don't want to be a old man sitting in a room full of fucking urns later in life.

If I ever did keep remains from anyone or anything, I'd go the cremation jewelry route. Some of it is very beautiful, and it's cool in a dark way to get pretty sparkles from bone fragments.

@Moonjay that pony looked sweet, sorry for your loss too. Not to hijack the topic, but I think most of us are mourning our losses in this topic.

Probably nothing except cat toys if I decide to get a new one. She has so much fur I don't think it will ever wash out completely.

Extremely variable. You can pretty much pay as much as you want to pay. I've seen simple ones for $15 and elaborate ones for hundreds.

There are several different websites that sell just that sort of thing and a lot of people sell them on Etsy too.
