I put together the two pieces in the span of 5 or so years

several years ago a guy came in and only had the disc, we couldn't give anything for it by itself so he just donated it to us

and yea, the reverse happened the other day, some guy had the player but not the disc, so he just donated it

Now I have both pieces (=

I already have a phat DS so its not like I haven't had the ability to play GBA games, but the novelty of playing it on a big screen is what I'm excited for. And I've always wanted a Super Gameboy and this is essentially owning that too

I don't have very many GBA games and even less GB (just pokemon red, my bro's copy of blue, and Final Fantasy Legends 3)

but still, this should make my playthroughs of Mario and Luigi, Sword of Mana, and Leaf Green fun

I actually have a fat CRT TV in my bedroom, so its currently hooked up to that. Fitting, I'd say

does anybody else own a gameboy player?

I got it when it came out. Didn't know why, it just seemed natural at the time to buy a Nintendo accessory that improved 2 systems that I already owned... I didn't use it much at all.

Then years later capture cards for consoles become more accessible and GBP became the best way to easily record GB games. Now they're more sought after by streamers who never got one earlier.

Game Boy Player is awesome.
I owned a first model Game Boy Advance and I never bothered to upgrade to an SP at the time.
Getting a Game Boy Player was great to me since I usually play most of my handheld games at home anyway.

Playing Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was too good on the Game Boy Player cause I was able to actually see everything without struggling to use a backlit screen. It felt like a fresh new experience and seeing the background was nice.

I also liked the rumble feature in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

also, I have way more GBA games than I thought

I have Pokemon Sapphire, Link to the Past, Sonic The Hedgehog 1, and fucking LotR Third Age. I've heard the PS2 version was surprisingly decent but I wonder about the GBA version lol

You're very lucky. Those discs go for a small fortune nowadays.

So one of the advantages of modding the Gameboy player is you can actually run it without using the disc. So that means I can fix it, and still reap the benefits of selling it mwahahaha

Whatcha gonna play?

I love the Gameboy player, best way to capture GBA footage. Especially with the GCN Component cables (which go for an actual fortune nowadays). We did an entire Emerald Nuzlocke on it. Much fun.

.........do flash cards exist for the GBA? >__>

and yea, Even several years ago I'm aware that the official gamecube component cables are crazy stupid valuable.

but does there not exist some 3rd party ones or something out there?

Nintendo made it stupidly unique. There never have been any third party ones.

Someone either just made or is in the process of making an HDMI conversion cable for it all these years later

I see

and apparently the two major advantages to modding the player is that you don't need the disc to run it, like I said

and that you can output it to like HD

but apparently you need the Component Cables )=

And also as that article points out, they eventually removed the Component Cable port from later model GameCubes because their grand plan for using it for 3D output was abandoned

Really unless you are a diehard GameCube collector, the GB Player is the only reason to need HD output from the GameCube itself, since backwards-compatible Wiis can do it, and their component cables are super common and reproducible

The hardware, in theory, should be more valuable than the disc now. There exists a homebrew program called Game Boy Interface which can be run through a Gamecube Action Replay. It's like the GBP but has more options that you can control (display outputs and stuff). So now people have reason to buy the unit without the disc, which would have been unusable before, while owning the disc without the unit is still worthless.

My Gameboy Player was stolen along with a whole shit ton of games of mine back when my brother stupidly threw a rager (a very long and much worse than it sounds family story), but I still had the disc for a while... think even that's been long misplaced now though :'(

Still got my Super Game Boy cartridge tho and I always loved that thing even more thanks to the whole drawing-on-screen and palette swapping features and its bizarre screensaver frames.

You can even do this with the GameCube 4 Swords Adventures

https://images.app.goo.gl/myd7jhLyZHbWMJrP8

Equipment needed:

One Gamecube or Wii running the Four Swords Adventure Disk
1 Large TV for primary Gamecube/Wii
4 Gamecubes with Gameboy Players
4 GBA-to-Gamecube Link Cables to connect GBA Players to primary Gamecube/Wii
4 Gamecube Controllers (Wavebirds are nice for wireless)
4 Smaller TVs for the additional Gamecubes

You would need 4 GameCubes and 4 Game Boy Players and 5 TVs but yeah you can do it.

EDIT: I was thinking of the GameCube 4SA, you only need 4 TVs to play the GBA one that came with LttP.
