Match 1:

Lost Odyssey - Neverending Journey
Score: 5/10
I've never been the biggest fan of the super wavering flute effect but honestly the song is still pretty alright. The progression is a bit slow and I'm sitting here like, is it going to do anything else... and then... 1:40 happens. It just seems so out of place and in your face. I don't hate this part but I dislike it more than the beginning and don't think it fits well at all.

VS

Shovel Knight: Plague Of Shadows - The Alchemist's Haven
Score: 9.5/10
I'll be honest I'm not that big a fan of the first 38 seconds but at the 51 second mark holy SHIT does this song come alive. It would be without a doubt a 10/10 song for me if the first bit was ANYTHING like 51 seconds and onward is. ESPECIALLY at 1:02 and it like slows down the best part of the song so you get to hear it longer and the buildup to the next part with it is just so incredible. The mix of the higher parts with the lower parts is just flawlessly perfect here. Unfortunately since there's no one in the world that shares my tastes with me, I'm pretty sure everything about this song will go forgotten and not cared about, but alas...

Match 2:

Zaku-Zaku Actors - Marion
Score: 5/10
0:55 is the only reason this song is at a 5/10. This part is actually pretty dang cool, the problem is I don't care at all about the rest of it.

VS

Atelier Ayesha - Invitation Flower
Score: 4/10
Awww, I really like the cute beastie on the image for this song. Unfortunately, my opinion of the song is not swayed by it. There's an okay part at 1:11 but other than that it's really not doing much for me. More super wavery flute that I don't like.

Not really feeling the songs in the first match.
Second match is too rude.
I like that the non-anime version of Distorted Happiness doesn't have a disproportionately good intro segment, since it means the rest of the song isn't as comparatively disappointing. Still doesn't change my vote. Nice Day is growing on me.

First we have Wild Arms (not really, but it totally is) vs. more faux-retro chiptune. Jake Kaufman is usually the best when it comes to this, but I'm not really feeling this one. Not a very memorable match, but not bad either.

Oooh, Marion is really good, I love the frantic piano mixed with the groovy backing bass. Jazzy, but not in a stereotypical "Jazz" fashion, if that makes any sense. Invitation Flower ~ Autumn is good, but a poor Atelier pick (there are songs from Atelier Ayesha I'd have in top 5 for this contest, if not #1). We keep getting tracks like this, Slag Dance, and Yesterday's Opponents are Tomorrow's Ingredients, but honestly I'd rather have stuff like MARIA, Stargazer, Sagittarius, Salamander, Close to the Edge, etc.

Overall I don't like this version of Distorted Happiness as much. The opening to this isn't really impressive anymore and it isn't held together as well BUT I do love that they use "the Vrtra instrument" in this, especially that part at 2:55. It adds a cool level of extra dissonance to this. But yeah, otherwise I liked the other one more (this is still good, would've likely still supported)

Distorted Happiness

more like neverending song mirite (dammit why is this only 2:45 that joke doesn't even work). Anyway uh this is an okay Final Fantasy song. Weird thing to be nominated. Alchemist's Haven kinda just sucks though. I don't like any Shovel Knight songs at all. Might be the worst OST to get multiple songs into VGMCs?

First couple minutes of Marion basically feel like the same thing over and over again, and it's not even a good thing IMO. It changes it up around the 2:00 mark, but then brings back that annoying droning noise again. Invitation Flower is kinda overly repetitive too, but I like the sound of it a good deal more. Has some of that good Atelier feel.

I think the VG version of DH is probably better? Close though.

Trivia: I actually didn't get it until I saw NFUN's post, but thank you azuarc for using that song as the trivia for today and reminding me about it because I'm currently dying of laughter right now as I type this while I listen to that song. THERE'S A RIOT AT THE BAT RACK!!!! Okay, now to listen to the songs that are actually being voted on today.

MATCH 1

Neverending Journey is a very interesting song. I really like the wavering flute sound and the acoustic guitar in the background. This song makes me feel like I'm riding on horseback in the setting of a spaghetti western film. It's very tranquil but at the same time it has this really strong emotion to it, which I think is pretty cool. Then suddenly at 1:39, we get this really cool guitar part going! One thing I really enjoy about Nobuo Uematsu's compositions that I've heard so far is his ability to blend together more peaceful sounds with some super energetic rock guitars, either in a single song, with this song being a good example of that, or spread throughout a game's soundtrack.

I usually really like Shovel Knight music and Jake Kaufman's work in general, but Alchemist's Haven isn't a very good representation of the kind of music from this game and composer that I like. It's certainly not bad but it's not really all that great. I just find it fairly uninteresting in general. To give an example of a song that I do like from the Shovel Knight games that was nominated, if Hidden By Night made it into the bracket, I would easily vote for it over Neverending Journey.

MATCH 2

This matchup isn't really difficult for me at all, but like others have said, both of these songs in my opinion are really good so it's unfortunate that Marion had to face off against Invitation Flower ~ Autumn in round 1 because I would've liked to see both of these songs at least win their first match.

Marion is a really cool song. I like the intro a lot. The thing the lead instrument is playing sounds pretty cool as does the piano underneath it. I really like all the different ways this song layers instruments and sounds on top of that repeating lead melody. I do like that lead melody already, so that certainly helps a lot, but having these layers get changed up so much makes it stay very fresh and exciting throughout the song. The parts where that repeating melody isn't playing like from 0:28-1:23 sound really nice as well.

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn is also a very nice song! This is a very pretty song, but not exactly pretty in the way I've described other songs as being pretty. The type of "pretty" this song evokes as a general feeling has a bit of mystery and wonder to it, which I think is really cool. I think the "wonder" part of that really comes out during that part from 1:11-1:25. Of course, I do think this song is pretty in the typical way I'd use that word as well. I think this song just feels very "Atelier" to me--this sort of magical feeling that I really like about a lot of music from this series that I've heard so far, which is something that really wins me over here compared to Marion, even though I do like Marion a lot as well.

MATCH 3

I've already said my piece on what I love about Distorted Happiness yesterday, so I won't really repeat myself much about that. With this version of the song, I appreciate the lack of that detuned piano. That alone pretty much makes this my preferred version of the song. The one thing I will repeat from yesterday is that I'd really like to see the strings from the other version in here. With that said, I still love this song a ton regardless of which version it is and I'd vote for either version over Nice Day.

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn
Nice Day

Neverending Journey is my 133rd favorite in the contest! I love the instrumentation here at the start it is like a Forest I like the FLUTe and the percussion is super cool. acoustic guitar is nice. One of the vaguely rare cases of me actively liking the simplicity of the melody and straightforwardness of the track. The alternating i-v progression works nice for me. also I guess the VI-VII-i cliche works well for me as a climactic thing when it comes in as predictable as it is simply because it's more complex than the super basic stuff it was doing before hahaha. It means there's not much to say about it but I like the pace it sets I guess a lot. though actually I start to really not like it anymore when the slow long notes in the electric guitar come in...I don't know why but it reminds me of a lot of songs that I do not like (I have a similar reaction to trans-siberian orchestra renditions of chirstmas music or metal covers of )when it comes in and feels very "dumb" to me I really dislike the whole electric guitar section...definitely brings this down for me a lot, I'd be a lot more enthusiastic about this otherwise.

The Alchemist's Haven is my 97th favorite in the contest! RANKING TOPIC SPOILERS Ermine has a habit of being a big fan of tracks where my opinion on them wildly fluctuates all the time. In this case this is one I always have SOMEWHERE in the blue zone (7.0-7.9) though. My blue zone for this contest ranking extends from 69th to 122nd place so this is like about in the middle of that. Currently 97th feels about right, though at other times it'll be at the top (near 69th) or bottom (near 122nd) of the blue 7.0-7.9 section. ANYWAYS I like this song, uhh, I like jake kaufman and although he's not really associated with this type of thing, it's pretty clear to me that it's him here...most other composers aren't quite as...playful when they do things like this? The super tense first minute is great to me, but that's certainly not the only thing I like, once it goes into the pseudo-classical section (which is transitioned into Very Well) it's very expressive despite its format as an nes chiptune. It FEELS like there's a harpsichord there to me even though there is not one and it's not even on a harpsichord-like sound. I could go on about a lot more technical details about this one through pretty much the whole thing and I WILL when...I get to it in my ranking list. Definitely an example of a track that's multiple types of things that I might come across as not liking sometimes, but I actually like a lot when done in just the right way, and this does these things in exactly the right way for me.

I do not believe that humans have lungs, I think it is a lie

Marion is my 156th favorite in the contest! this is one of those tracks that would make me think I really dislike mozell if it was what I was introduced to him with, but I know I do not dislike him since I'm a big fan of a lot of his stuff...just not this, or banbard (glass is great though, along with plenty of other stuff that hasn't been in vgmcs I've found over the past year). My main issue here's how muddy the production feels to me I guess, this reminds me a lot of the sector of dai's umineko (touhou) music that I really do not like. The drums here are especially unappealing to me in that regard. It's also just repetitive without being a thing I really feel builds to any climax that I care about, building only in intensity of expression without doing anything actually musically appealing to me at all. It feels like a line of 20 different jesters that all try to entertain you but they all only know the same exact boring tricks as each other they just keep doing them louder and louder all they do is scream "I;M BORING" increasingly louder with each new jester after the previous one is "discarded".,, Also much like the dai umineko s-[continued...]

[...continued]-tuff I dislike this just kind of stays melodically soloing aimlessly over like a single diatonic scale/tonal center for nearly the entire thing and feels like it never even explores what THAT has to offer (and it feels like it wants to get outside of it but can't figure out how to) I don't know it's just extremely trapped in a TRANSPARENT CUBE. I love how this starts and think I'm going to like the track but it literally never goes anywhere past that initial impression and just kind of beats this would-be-cool thing into a disgusting bloody mess instead over the course of 3 minutes. also dislike the maj V chords in the harpsichord part which is also like unfortunately pretty much the only time the song diverges from its tonal monotony so it's like the ONE time it's FINALLy interesting it is also a thing I find really cheesy and do not like for OTHer reasons. Fake bells at 3:15 are really cool though I do like that part. Even though I dislike a ton about it, it gets this high up because I REALLY DO like how it starts and a lot of other random sections. If this contest was about judging random 20 second clips of songs to each other, almost any section of this would be pretty high-tier to me, but as a whole, I'm really not a fan of the way this plays out.

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn is my 31st favorite in the contest! GUST music is GOOD sounds. I have pretty much the opposite opinion here from marion haha. This is nice and varied and has really clean production and plays with interesting cool effects right off the bat to make this feel crisp and SHARP which Gust Sound TEAM music never fails to deliver on it seems. Never really feels monotonous in its repetition of any ideas. Love the instrumentation throughout, particularly all the mallet stuff. My favorite moment is pretty near the start, the group of three ascending notes on the piano being transposed down in whole steps is exactly the kind of thing I like ((especially because of the group of 3 notes is an arpeggiated sus2...) and the way it caps that off with the cool reversed sound is GOLD. Yeah this just does about everything I expect and hope from atelier music. It's not a top tier atelier track for me but it's still incredibly solid and I was excited to press the play button knowing that I was about to hear this song coming out of my computer speakers and entering my ears for listening to it for this MATCH!!!!%\

I talked about distorted happiness and nice day yesterday. Obviously this link for Distorted Happiness is different and I /significantly/ prefer the version from yesterday. I ranked it 90th (based on the version we heard yesterday) but if I'd done my rankings based on this version I'd rank it around 154th or so. Quiiite a difference in terms of impact on the things that stuck out to me most about the song, especially that it doesn't have the detuned piano that excited me most about the other. I still like the distortion in the voices, dark electronic atmosphere and some other cool dissonant piano moments are present here, but the production effects are significantly less interesting to me too which was one of the main perks about the song to me. 154 might be overreacting, but it's definitely significantly lower. My vote is still Nice Day either way but this time the preference for it is muuuch more significant.

Nice Day

Nice Day > Battle of Marion > Invitation Flower ~ Autumn > Distorted Happiness > Neverending Journey >>>> The Alchemist's Haven

this one deserves a proper writeup i think rather than me just providing my thoughts in one line.

NEVERENDING JOURNEY

music for real cowboys that wander the wild west yee haw. i've used epsylon range from this ost in a vgmgg before, and this is the track before it. that's funny. this is the sort of slow music that i like - repetitive, grooving, and acoustic. did not expect the electric guitar at the last minute but it's very welcome - clean sounding and makes the song sound more seriouscool than it did before.

BATTLE OF MARION

kung-fu wizard duels against ten other kung-fu wizards blessed in the psychic arts in mid-orbit. every wizard is going REALLY FASTTT. it feels like a kaleidoscope of colour coming from every direction. best way i can describe this song is 5 gifs of pk rockin overlaid over eachother all going at varied speeds. big final confrontation feeling.

INVITATION FLOWER ~ AUTUMN

this one was difficult and honestly, it's a wonder i didn't pick this one instead of marion. it's probably cause it's not a pinpoint example of my tastes in the atelier ayesha ost - instead, it feels like a broad cover. it does have that folksy sound i love from the ost tho, but i would've loved to have heard wish for treasure, dance of dripping water or man in the high mountain.

THE ALCHEMIST'S HAVEN

this song feels like hate. one of my favorite composers in my favorite style from him, but the least liked variation of song within that style. gonna be clear here, virt is one of my most fav composers - especially when it comes to any of his fakebit osts. he has three styles that i've heard. 'synth-heavy', heard in double dragon neon, the mighty switch force series, the shantae series.

'realistic', he's used in older games like centipede infestation and red faction guerilla. finally, there's 'fakebit', my favorite of the three - used in shovel knight and regular show: 8bit land. in the 'fakebit osts' there are then three different variations of track. there's ADVENTURE ONWARD AND FORTH which is typically used for level themes - examples of these would be an underlying problem in shovel knight and area 4 (top down) in regular show 8bit land.

there's OH NO SUDDENLY ATTACKED BY AN ENEMY TIME TO DUEL which is boss themes. examples of this include the defender in shovel knight and boss in regular show 8bit land. finally, there's ~dance mode activated~ - examples of this are this song, chance game in regular show 8bit land, and courage under fire again from shovel knight. i only like the first two variations, because the last fits in game but isn't nice to listen to on it's own..

Neverending Journey
wow this is so somber. can we get a guitar and flute that's what this song is and i am really not in the mood for it (i never am).

The Alchemist's Haven
it's the 8-bit beast. this is the worst kaufman soundfont imo, and this is from a modern game. the notes are too crisp. anyway starts kind of creepy but becomes a typical classical arrangement which is very nice and funny. it's also good that it sounds alright.

Battle of Marion
what a great intro. those pitch bending shifts are really clean and then the main melody is so good. i especially like the percussive piano pattern. that's really good. the section at 0:54 is the best part.

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn
wow speaking of great intros.... the short piano runs down into the reverse sounds is really cool. i also love the natural instruments used throughout to supplement the piano, as well as the trumpets and other more modern sounds. this is a masterpiece
i wonder what it would sound like live (someone please)

Caligula - Distorted Happiness
what....where did the cool piano detuning go....it sounded way cooler... i still like this quite a bit. the whispering into the heavy metal (?) sections is done very well. and then of course you have your generic anime song section, but it blends between styles very well surprisingly.

Nice Day
this song makes me feel like i am having a Nice Day. it is very hapy and the accompaniment is well put together. i really like when rhythms are played against each other and this does so in a basic way that is good. the lead has a little too much echo delay but overall wonderful composition

Nice Day

LO-NJ -- Not my genre of instrumentation. Invokes a strong feeling of journeying out into a rugged wilderness. But that's not a feeling I really care much about, sorry. oh wow the sudden electric guitar catches me off guard though, in a good way. I can get much more into this than the sort of intro, a very profound destiny feeling. And then it goes back to stuff I don't like because loop loop.

SK:PoS-TAH -- I like the silly sort of "12121122" rhythm it's got going on. A mischevous presence done well with their retro sound limitations. Cool stuff here.

Z-ZA-BoM -- Synth works with the piano at the start, drums get going pretty nicely wild once they start, particularly compared to the other calmer sounds. Speaking of which, I sort of feel like a lot of the instrumentation sounds are a bit too "calm" or "mellow" for what I'd want to get into, even if the actual beat of the song isn't, if that makes sense. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe I'm just not in the right mood for writeups today. The sliding synths are alright though. Drums are pretty consistently good in this song, and when a main melody gets wild to too match the drums at 2:04 it's good too. Not really feeling it for much else though, not that Any of it I would say is "bad" however. Closest to coming "bad" here is that the backing to this song, the bit that you hear in the intro & very often more throughout, kind of gets a little repetitive in a poor way for me.

AA-IF~A -- Instruments here are perhaps a bit too "traditional" for me here. Is traditional the right word? Oriental? I don't know but hopefully my point gets across anyway. Anyway despite that the rhythm at the start is real nice, and the percussive marimba sounds make for a good beat. Pretty good variety in the selections of sounds to give a lively atmosphere. 1:11 section's particularly nice. This is actually another match I'm gonna be voting against my bracket preparation sheet, albeit this time I marked the match as close at least. Hm, thinking about it more, Mario n would certainly seem like the song I would prefer with the instrumentation, but something about it, something I can't quite put my finger on, just doesn't fully do it for me, whereas this song does with it's fun, active beats & rhythm & lively atmosphere.

C-DH -- Did the first version have that glitch stutter at the start? I don't remember. That might be a slight (slight) plus. Still don't like the whispers though. Piano's not out of key in a dissonance I dislike but it's still a lone, moody piano and I don't like that either. Was the section at 1:35 in the "original?" It works well for me. But the parts with normal lyrics or whispering really strongly do not. 2:55 also works well in the same way, I like the metallic instrument distortion going on. I guess in some ways I find myself slightly more appealed by this song than the original with the more distortion focused breaks from the main music, but as I say the parts I like are not the main focus of the song, the main stuff still kills my interest as a whole.

SdII-ND -- This is the same song as yesterday so nothing changes here, this song from this obscure japanese console that is most certainly Not the Sega Genesis and is in fact a really big number will continue to get my vote, just like yesterday nothing different here

Neverending Journey
Battle of Marion
Distorted Happiness

neverending journey is another Nice chill song like niceday. and then it gets silly at the end but that's ok too! A Good Tune. meanwhile I still don't understand the appeal of shovelsongs rip

hmm these two songs are both kinda jumbled messes but marion does a better job keeping itself together + that one synth thing I don't know what to call that goes on from the start is Cool so it comes out on top here, alright.

I still don't have my fangirling over DH (and other yesterday writeups) ready oops. this version feels a bit... flatter? idk; I'm p sure I prefer the anime version but it's not enough of a difference to change my vote here. (maybe whenever I finally get around to updating my itunes stuff I can both add this ver to the b8 vgm playlist and add the anime ver to the anime OP/ED playlist... feels a bit cheaty but it's worth it!!)

Lost Odyssey - Neverending Journey
Atelier Ayesha - Invitation Flower ~ Autumn
Spindizzy II - Nice Day

Another head-scratcher to rep Plague of Shadows, though I'd argue it's considerably more effective with the game's context of a zany underground alchemy lab. Can really appreciate the Bach-flavored arrangement from 1:04 onward, a touch that lends well to PoS' macabre indulgences. Meanwhile, Neverending Journey is over here giving me chills something fierce. The visual I get is something close to a weary caravan inching across miles and miles of a desert void, with a brutal sandstorm kicking up at 1:39. Hate to put a vote against Kaufman, but Haven is far from his best.

Boy I keep waiting for Marion to really take off and wow me, but it never does. Just kind of inoffensive and meandering without any real climax to speak of. This track seems to be structured with a lot of looping parts all thrown on top of the main melody and feels inorganic as a result, as if it were built in GarageBand or something. Invitation Flower is not as good as I seem to remember it being, but it's never 'disappointing' in the way that Marion is. NFUN made me listen to a playlist containing all of the Atelier Ayesha songs and my overall impression was 'Good(!!)' but I can't recall anything that really, really stood out. Might need to give that a second pass.

nice day
