Anyone using CDs is stuck in 2000.

I wish I was hip as you. Still I use MP3s for the most part but that doesn't mean I don't like CD's. It simply means I don't feel the need for physical media when it comes to music as much. Even more so when devices I listen to music on support MP3.

Most new cards don't have them anymore unless specifically asked for. Most people either listen to radio like Sirius XM or they play music via bluetooth from their phone. I would suggest getting some audio books digitally on your phone and using bluetooth. You can even rent digital audio books from libraries now if you'd rather not purchase them.

You all know you can rip CDs, right?

We were doing that in 2008. Anyone using CDs is stuck in 2000.

In 2019 people use streaming apps and bluetooth. Yeah, there's a subscription, but you get almost every song ever made plus all the new songs, and you can download anything for "free".

I have to. While I rip 'em for my MP3 player my car only uses CD's. There's no AUX port or anything.

You can buy a radio with an aux port for less than $50. They're easy to install yourself, but installation probably costs around $50 or so, too.

jfc if your misery is borne out of your own stubbornness, you're the one to blame not the car

You could also have not cheaped out on the rental. Car rental places have options. You rented a Kia. Next time, do some research on what you're renting and if the radio is enough of an issue to make to bitch and moan about it, pony up the dough for something nicer next time

I rented a "KIA Soul" recently for a business trip. Never even been in a KIA before.

The wretched thing only had a radio in it, which I refused to even turn on. I must have ripped half the dashboard apart looking for the disc tray. I just couldn't believe that any vehicle made these days would not have a music player.

I hadn't seen a car come equipped with only a radio in perhaps thirty years. What a PoS! My condolences to anyone who actually purchased on of those turds.

Ten hours of silence during that trip. I'll never rent a KIA again. Now, I make sure there is a disc player before I rent anything. Let the buyer/renter beware.

My Kia had a tape player (wtf phone. Why did you autocorrect tape to rape...) in it. I spent to get a decent radio with CD, aux, and usb.

I still have the original radio somewhere...

Also, silence for 10 hours was your fault. Sing, put music on your phone.

Fuck Ive seen people wearing headphones. But I dont recommend that at all.

I can understand his frustration. Its true its definitely his fault. But it doesnt mean radio would be much better. It depends on which songs you like. Or if you even want music. I had to listen to radio for a while when my phone was gone and I didnt have my CDs. And some days, I just stopped listening because nothing good was on. They have a certain list of like a few songs they usually play. Which are usually whats popular these days in a certain genre. And I usually didnt car for them. I wanted to listen to stuff I liked.

Also, for long trips, listening to the same list of songs over and over can get boring. I usually like to listen to podcast. Though, then a CD player wouldnt matter. Id need and six cable, Bluetooth, or USB port...

Do car audio enthusiasts still prefer CDs? Seems like they would shun Bluetooth and compressed audio. Do they put media servers in their cars loaded with lossless music?

There's always the "lol cds whostillbuysthat" comments, but vinyl records, that should've died out when the CD first came, are more popular than ever, and even cassettes have been making a comeback too. People will always want the real things.

Vinyl is preferred because the audio is stored analog, it's genuinely a superior platform for storage fidelity.
Not everybody gets a hard-on for the vinyl sound, it also takes even more physical space and can't be used on the computer or in the car.

Who even pays for music?

Are you for real? Do you really believe that you should get everything for free?

It depends on your general music taste. Yes, you can probably find and download everything if you only listen to the most famous and popular artists. I know I usually have a hard time finding stuff at all and my wife can sometimes not find anything other than random stuff uploaded to YouTube.

Also, streaming sites have nothing of value to me and I refuse to pay for it. I prefer using iTunes but that's basically only when I can't get it on physical media. I don't really like it though since it doesn't feel like I actually own it.

That is true a concert ticket gives the band more money then an album sale, however buying merch at a show i hear is a good way to give the band more money as well.

My music buying habits are the occasional download purchase, vinyl, the odd CD I see at thrift stores and such and then a couple of cassettes. Why? I like music enough to want more music, any way I can get it. If I see an album at a thrift store for a dollar and it looks interesting, i want it regardless of if I have MP3s of it or could download it for free. I'd actually compared to illegal downloads and streaming a dollar for gauranteed high quality is worth it to me. Plus I can rip it and be done with it. I own one album digitally in flac, and on casette, and vinyl. I want it on CD now so I can compare the mediums.

As far as the car is concerned I have an MP3 player I load music onto and use an aux cord. Though for the odd CD purchase I like CD players but it isnt necessary. I dont like the idea of streaming, and have never considered it. I dont want to tie up my phone with that service wasting battery, and I feel like the music is compressed to some degree(or like with spotify i think you can uncompress it but use lots of data). so I dont see it working for me. Everything I want to listen to is on my mp3 player. I never really get the urge to listen to songs that arent on it, so that doesnt matter to me.

Live shows isn't my thing, but other than that, you're right. Still doesn't mean you should get their music for free if they didn't release it for free.

I used to feel this way. I was happy just listening to whatever I had in my CD collection. But Spotify introduced me to lots of stuff that I had never heard before and probably never would have if it weren't for the ability to build a channel based on an album, artist of specific song.

Actually, my company rented a KIA. I had no familiarity with the brand, so I was caught unaware.

I also didn't expect any car built in 2018 to be so cheap as to only have a radio. Cars built 40 years ago only had radios, for crying out loud.

I stopped listening to the radio in the 1980s.

Yes, it was my fault for assuming a modern car would have anything more than an ancient radio. I know this. Now, I know to verify these things.

I stopped listening to the radio in the 1980s. Not only would they play the worst songs any artist had made, I didn't like some arrogant jerk playing what he thought I wanted to hear, followed by commercials played with an equal amount of air time as the content. I just quit radio altogether, and never looked back.

The fact that you "stopped listening to the radio in the 1980s" is entirely on you and your own stubbornness. You chose to drive in silence. You're whining about the rental car when your grief was self-inflicted.

How am I supposed to listen to books on CD now???

Haha!

Dude I feel your pain! We bought a 2019 Jeep Cherokee last year and I went to pop a cd in and it was nowhere to be found. I listen to CDs all the time, and often mix my own crap down onto cd specifically to listen to a car's sonic mix so it hit me pretty hard.

Honestly if I had noticed it didn't have a CD player I wouldn't have bought it.

P.S: It has no keyhole to start it either. Times are a changin', blah.

I have satellite radio now and used to think it was awesome because you'd hear a lot of songs you'd never normally hear on the radio before.

The problem is you quickly see that they just play THOSE songs a million times every day, so it's not really all it's cracked up to be.

Still I guess it's cool to hear something from Rush that's not Tom Sawyer or Freewill, on account of my no CD player lol.

But its still your fault for not listen to the radio out of what seems to be pure stubbornness. You could have easily not ridden in silence, and chose not to. And that is definitely you fault. As for the songs they play, its very subjective on whether or not theyre the worst. Sometimes, they play a good song by that band. It just all depends. You did also say you had not researched the brand before, which could be in you. Even if the company was the one who rented the car. And like Zang said, you could have backups. Like bringing a portable speaker just to hear whatever you wanted to hear. Its wouldnt be the same as having it coming from the car speakers. But at least it wouldnt have been 10 hours of silence...
