This, and it is revealed the white walkers were the indigenous race to the north that has been unfairly maligned by humans, and have a complex society and culture of their own. "There must always be a stark in winterfell" was just some dumb propaganda line to maintain the hegemony of the stark regime. In the South, Cersei Lannister retains possession of the Iron Throne and defeats the insurgent uprisings against her completely legitimate regime in the eyes of historians whose positions were appointed by Cersei herself. She goes down as a heroic, unfairly maligned and incredibly strong woman who saved Westeros from foreign Invaders and domestic political power grabs. She is the most beloved Queen in Westerosi history, and the Starks are the great villains, with only bitter nationalistic notherners still uttering a positive hint about them.

I mean just kidding none of this will happen but it's fun to think about

Here's my bold totally original I'm sure prediction.

The combined might of Westeros drive the white walkers back and win the day, and when that's over Cersei kills (almost) everyone including her brother. Final scene is Cersei on the throne finally in power, dwelling on all she had to do and all she lost to get there, when Arya slits her throat.

My predictions:

Jorah dies saving Dany, Frost Dragon kills one of the living dragons, Jon and Dany marry after learning his origin, Jon defeats the dragon somehow, Cersei does evil scheming and kills Jon when she means to kill Dany, Dany marries Gendry to legitimize her claim, Cersei miscarries or otherwise loses her new baby, Dany defeats her with the power of friendship and unites the kingdoms, giving birth to Jon's baby. Jaime does something heroic and goes down as a righteous knight.

I just don't think the showrunners will have Dany "break the wheel," regardless of what she said.

Lives For Certain: Sam and Gily, Grey Worm and What's-her-Face

Probably Lives: Dany or Jon but not both, Sansa, Gendry, Brienne, Asha, , Davos, Jaime

Probably Dies: Cersei, Arya, Bronn, Tormund, Theon

Dead For Certain: Jorah, Melisandre, Mountain, Hound, Varys

Unguessable: Tyrion, Bran

Current theory: Dany goes full mad king and tries to have Jon burned for treason when he tells her he is the true king. He survived as blood of dragon and confirms everything. Dany winds up being the first major character to die as a result.

Or he survives an ice dragon blast for similar reasons. One or the other.

boring ep. a whole entire episode of putting pieces in place. I guess their goal was to have an episode featuring every single character, but as a result each character only has like 1 scene, and each scene relies heavily on nostalgia for earlier seasons

like the entire ep is the writers going "what happens when this person meets this person? what's THAT conversation gonna look like?"

I mean a little of that can be really good, but the episode needed to counterbalance it with some stabbing

This was a problem with the meeting at the Dragonpit during the s7 finale. Too many obligatory-feeling conversations. Feels to me like they need to be harsher with themselves and kill their darlings a little bit. You might want some of these scenes and character interactions but you don't need them all.

But maybe this is the only episode where they'll get a chance to do all of that. And it's not like I didn't enioy each individual scene, just in the totality of it they don't all feel necessary.

This is the first time in a long time that I felt the "Daenerys goes Mad King and dies" outcome theory came in super strong.

After a while where it was hinted, by the end of last season it felt alarmingly (to me) like it was going to go "nope her and jon are gonna be the hero couple and we're going to be expected to take it as a good end for westeros"

If Team Stark (Jon being a member is pending) actually pulls this off I might have an outcome other than Team Night King to root for.

basically bran, arya, and sansa need to form a power trio and wreck everyone. it'll be great.

but so will the night king bringing eternal winter to westeros (and essos)

Euron/Yara/Theon stuff feels pointless but I guess we'll see. Well, I guess Theon showing up in Winterfell could be "fun" but it looks like Jaime is gonna run that plot so dunno if I'd want a retread of it.

They had a scene for every important relation. That's not a problem. Arya had to see Sandor and Gendry. Sam had reason to learn his father and brother died. Tyrion got to catch up with Sansa.

These were all preexisting relationships, it would be odd not to touch on them when the characters had the chance to reunite.

The episode had a lot of scene setting to do. That'll be important when next episode is half those characters dying because Winterfell is so fucked.

FIRST EPISODE THOUGHTS

Who knew that the last season of Game of Thrones would also have probably the funniest single episode of the show top to bottom? There were so many moments over the course of the episode where I couldn't help but laugh or smile. Most of it was those perfect little callbacks to characters who haven't seen each other in seasons (hell, I don't think Arya and Jon have seen each other since, what, the second episode? first?). A lot of it was characters showing up and reminding us how much we missed them. And all of it served perfectly well to remind us of why we love this show, why we follow and know so many different characters, recognize how far their journeys have come and how many paths have crossed, and how even amidst all the recognition and bits of humor... there are still those gutpunches. We smile when we can because it'd be too bleak to just watch Sam learn about Daenerys' killing of his kin or what happened to Lord Umber or wondering what choice Bronn of Blackwater is going to make. And winter is coming hard and fast.

I am very glad that the show took a hiatus if it meant to tighten everything up and make everything matter, emotionally or for story or for character or for suspense. There weren't any weak spots I can think of without doing it to quibble, especially since there definitely have been in the past, sometimes too often. And everything there, all the reminders and recaps of things we may have forgotten... they all worked because it was two characters catching up with each other, and all these scenes had so much depth to the story, to the storytelling, to the foreshadowing, and to remembering.

I'm going on and on, but it was just wonderful. The transitions between joy and sorrow and revelation, and actually seeing all these characters that have been far apart from each other for so long all together in one place for one purpose... and still there's the politics at play and how characters interact and what they know and don't know... okay. Stopping long gushes now. On non-specific things.

- How about that opening credits?! Coming through the breach of The Wall and going with the ice overtaking Last Hearth before going into a very protracted journey through just Winterfell and King's Landing, all with a much more wintry sun and darker color to the map. Death is approaching. And how good was it that we had the hint of Last Hearth at the beginning, watching the ice overtake it, and then the remaining wall watchers discover what was inside at the end of the hour?

- Arya and Gendry, Arya and the Hound, and especially Arya and Jon were some of the best moments. "How'd you sneak up on me?" "How'd survive a knife to the heart?" / "Have you used it?" "Once or twice." So much is different and yet so much is familiar.

- Samwell Tarly. All of Samwell Tarly tonight. Goddamn.

- Watching the final episode of the last season just before this one, I was rather hoping to see Littlefinger stick around. But no. Not after the first five minutes. There is no time for scheming and playing petty politic, and I am so fucking glad he got taken care of before this episode now. We don't need his discord. And looking at next week's episode, the Littlefinger death makes next week look all the more suspenseful.

- That last shot. The look of recognition and then horror on Jaime's face. The completely stonefaced look of the Three-Eyed Raven, no ounce of Bran facing the man who kicked him out a window. So perfect, full circle.

- And on that note, remembering the countdown to the beginning of the episode with the last shot of that as Bran looking in through that window from the end of the first episode...

This is how I wanted, wished, prayed, hoped for Lost to go out. This was all about the characters, but never ever at the expense of storytelling, plot, or momentum. Everything is connected.

It felt like almost nothing happened besides reunions. Theon rescued his sister, Tormund and Night's Watch guy discovered the body, Arya asked Gendry to make her a weapon, and Euron boned Cersei... and all of those things technically still count as reunions.
