I already have a gaming laptop. It's too big/bulky to carry around so I'm looking for something smaller for convenience. This would be used purely for writing and likely light internet browsing. So it doesn't have to be great.

The only downside I've seen to chromebooks is a lot of writing apps don't play nice with them?

Sorry should have said, I'll never buy an Apple product. Really don't like them or what you get for your money

Afaik the intent behind Chromebooks is that you'd use Google Docs for something like that. I think they can install android apps (or just full-blown Linux if you want, in which case you'd use LibreOffice or something), so unless you really want MS Word specifically/really hate Google Docs specifically this seems like the best option for you at a glance

I use a Surface at work sometimes and they're pretty good. They're not exactly cheap but I really like the flexibility of it being a Windows tablet and a small laptop.

I'm looking up Surface's and good grief there's so many of them. I may have to research Scrivener working on them but if it does that should work. Not sure I need one of the ridiculously priced ones but maybe an older model would work

A Surface just runs Windows so any Windows compatible application (barring those that are computationally demanding) should run on it. I can vouch for the Pros, used the 3, 4, and 6 and they're all pretty solid.

How much shittier is a Surface Go than a Surface Pro?

And is a Surface Go shittier than say a Surface Pro 3 because those are basically the same price.

I've never used a Go so I can't say, would have to compare specs to see. The lack of a regular USB port is kinda annoying though.
