And I started with the Scholar because I thought he looked pretty cool and went on the path to the Merchant next. So did I pick the good route?

Don't tell me this is one of those games where the party members don't even talk to each other.

They do a little. Not much. It's weird.

I still need to finish this game, I took a break because it's really damn long and I have other things going on. Thief is probably the ideal required person to have. Scholar is fine though.

They do, its just awkward. Starting from chapter 2, the non-focus characters all have points in the chapters where they have a conversation with the focus character. But they have to be in party and you press a button and its like, separate from everything.

Octopath is best seen as 8 completely separate narratives set in the same world, that dont connect until the very end.

I think it was a little overambitious personally but it wasnt the storytelling that sold so many copies so...

Also, the first person you pick is locked in your party until you finish their entire storyline (chapter 4)

I'll give it this, the battle system is really fun. With that said, I just finished with the Merchants story and going to Olberic story. I hope the stories become more interesting because so far the story feels mediocre.

There a few party chat scenes pending who's in your crew when you're messing with storyline stuff.

But that said, there is no good route. I tended to just seek out the lowest level area to go to next; some chapter 2s are have suggested level 30 and some others are like 24. I did the 24 first.

Cyrus as a full time party member is okay. He's locked in until you resolve his chapter 4, which means he's naturally going to have a higher level than anyone else for most of the game but as a damage dealing unit this is a good thing. Constant weakness prediction is a good enough in-battle boon.

Yeah I put this game down because I felt like there was no cohesiveness between the characters and how everything tied into a larger story.

8 main characters is too many to do anything with in a single game. So it winds up doing nothing.

The battle system seems well thought out and executed, though.

The random encounters are annoying, but I'll give this game a pass because I am really digging the battle system. It's almost been awhile since I played a turn based RPG since Persona 5.

Yeah I don't think the story is really going to draw me back to playing this game. And I don't think the game is gonna do anything more interesting with the gameplay either. I'm going to go to all the characters and if not one of their stories interest me, I might drop it. At least it was my friend who gifted this game to me so I'm not really losing anything other than time.

They don't, and every chapter is a rehash of every other chapter - arrive in town, use social ability to resolve some local issue, go to dungeon, fight boss. It gets tedious, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the game. The combat was fun enough to carry my through 60 hours or so, though I never finished all the stories or any of the content that follows.

Yeah I'm seeing it, even the bosses feel like a rehash of each other. Like you fight everyone of them the exact same way. Shame really, because this game plays fine but everything else just feels disjointed.

Primrose has a good story. Nobody else is as good as hers. Some are fairly decent, but I found like 4 of the stories to be boring and kind of a waste of time to have there. They should have added some of them as side characters.

Primrose has the best but I also like Ophelia's and Olberic's.

Tressa was the worst one.

H'aanit's story is a huge mindfuck once you get to the final final boss and realize what happened.

Really? I haven't done her chapter 4 yet.
I didn't like Ophelia's story. It was kinda bland catholic church stuff without even the fun politics.

Not her chapter 4 but the end final boss reveals a massive bomb about her story.

I just got done with that doctor guys story, so still, Primrose story is the only one that interests me the most. With that said, I give kudos to how this game handles side quests. Instead of the typical "point A to point B" kind of shit, you can do creative stuff like beating up a guy who is harassing a woman or buying a dress from a dancer to give it to another dancer. From what I heard from my friend there are couple of ways to finish a side quests as well. Pretty cool.

Oh just you wait. It won't happen often since you picked the scholar, but getting into fights where you have no effective offense options makes fights drag like a motherfucker.

Also, the characters are meant to be polar opposites. Like the thief can steal items and the merchant can buy them. The cleric can lead people while the dancer lures them. The warrior will challenge while the beast master will just pounce on them.

Many side quests have multiple ways to solve them and you always get the same reward so you don't have to stress over what path to take.

Just I make everyone else's level relatively the same?

Try not to get more than 10 levels apart with anyone. Bewildering Grace gives you a way to recoup that, but it's very rare to get the exp bonuses. Funny thing, I was doing a section of the game with the same team over and over, then switched to the underleveled b team and cast a 100x EXP multiplier in the first fight to get them the same level. I think the odds for that or the equivalent JP are like 1/1000

Cyrus is a great character to start out with because you get free enemy weakness analyses every time you start a battle and he's an overall pretty strong unit.

As far as keeping everyone closely leveled, I don't think it matters that much as long as it's not like 20 levels apart or so. My main team was Primrose, Olberic, Alfyn and Tressa and I pretty much did the others' ch4 stories with them being underleveled and 3 of my main units carrying them lol.

He's the strongest mage. Primrose is hindered by being a dancer primary.

How often should I be upgrading the characters equipments? They're expensive and I don't think I'm getting enough money inflow to keep up with it.

Equipment doesn't matter as much as you'd think in this game. You should steal the highest level equipment possible as early as you can and run with that. Also you can hop into some very high level caves early and get equipment without having an encounter. That will take care of your equipment needs for the majority of the game. Unfortunately it requires some save scumming so it's not very fun, but until you get to a higher level money will be an issue and the low level equipment is pretty worthless (accessories aside).

Do go for things like the special equipment Tressa can buy from her parents, and 'forbidden' weapons, many of those are top tier and you'll use them a lot.

Thanks a lot.

Another question, I think that Dancers passive in getting SP will come in handy for Cyrus. Can I equip the dancer skill and then change to a different class while still attaining it? I'm trying to experiment but haven't gotten that far yet.

Once you unlock the Dancer subclass you can. Just get the JP to unlock Second Wind (you'll want it on everyone, Dancer is pretty much the best subclass to fully unlock on everyone to begin with, along with Merchant).
