My parents are refusing to allow me to go to any college because they just can't afford it.

I keep telling them to just take out a loan but they won't budge please help me I don't know what to do

At the time for me, 2002-2010 ( I failed a whee bit too many engineering classes), I paid my way through various California grants and whatever the grants couldn't cover, I paid via loans from Sallie Mae. All I know is after those eight years, I had about $9-10k in loans to pay off since the grants covered a good chunk of the cost.

Any reason why you can't take out a loan under your name?

Oh no. I want my parents to pay for my adult education instead of myself applying for federal aid, working, applying for scholarships, or going to a cheaper college. Help me PotD!

Thinking back to my situation, can't recall how I even got the loan. I didn't get a credit card until the mid 2000's and am not sure if I had a co-signer. But then again, maybe the financial aid industry changed quite a bit since I started collage.

For me I took out a $7,000 loan and my dad paid the other $3,000 out of pocket throughout the 9 months.

It was a technical college that I dropped out of after about 8 months.

I'm told I couldn't get a loan because I didn't have credit.

you know, I'm fine with getting a loan under my name I just don't know how

Also, this particular school is American who put me in this dumb as fuck mentor program which means I get NO financial aid.

I know this doesn't answer your question but any reason you can't just attend a junior/community college to knock out your GEs first? Would your parents be able to afford that? Worse case scenario might be to forego attending said college immediately while you work whatever job you can get, save up for said college, while building up a credit history.

Society has set it up so college is the default place people go after high school, regardless of if they can afford it or if they really have a reason to go aside from writing "they went to college" on their resume.

Are these opportunities only available the first year or two of college? If not, I see no reason why you can't wait 1-2 years while you knock out your GEs.

That's just something you'll have to sacrifice. If you get a loan, you'll be spending more for these two some years at said college instead of spending less by knocking out your GEs at a local community college. 4-5 years from now, are you really gonna say sating your ego is worth the extra loan to pay off?

No. But people who dont live in the same town usually do. In college town the students cost is somewhat mitigated either by roommates or housing loans. And the rent is generally really high during school.

Dunno. My point being you don't HAVE to live at a college and that cuts a significant portion of your costs. Ok so you miss out on that 'college life' experience but for someone like me I couldn't care. Local school, local work, why leave?

Didnt really read through the whole thread after the first page, but did you fill out a FAFSA (assuming youre in the U.S.)? Unless your parents make a lot of money, you shouldve gotten at least a little bit in grants. And the rest you can do loans. Yeah they can suck, but think of it as an investment in you. Also, no shame for going to a community college. Might even be smarter just to get all of your GEs out of the way without all of the bs

Not necessarily true. From what I understand, DoDMERB only evaluates those seeking commission as officers. I'm not sure if I'd be "disqualified" from enlisting but I could be wrong, haven't asked a recruiter yet. I haven't ruled it out yet.
