I don't know if free is necessarily the best goal, but the current model of students graduating with degrees that won't help them deal with the crippling debt they had to take on to get them is pretty broken.

It sounds great, but in practicality, no.

College shouldn't be the next thing after high school anyway. Young adults should think about what they want to do, checking out career and trade fairs, instead of college fairs. If you want to learn more, great, then go to college. If you're just going to college to get a degree for a job, then you're going for the wrong reason and just throwing away money that could be better spent on certifications, job training, apprenticeships, etc.

yeah no shit, isn't student loan debt greater than credit card debt in the u.s.?

Free with a job at the end of it, and part of the cost of the college gets taken out of the pay for that job. If the job goes poof, then so does the cost to go to college.

Solves most of the problems with the current system, and just having people go to college for laughs etc. If you just decide you don't want to do the job (not that you can't, or that it goes away etc), then you owe for the schooling you took (unless you get a similar job within 1 year of graduation).

There is no way it should be a for profit system like it is, and people shoudn't be stuck with debt for the rest of their lives (some teachers for instance actually can't pay off their student loans, or keep up with the interest for the first 5-10 years, which means they end up making significantly less for 20+ years (due to paying loans off) while already getting paid fairly low wages.

look, if the free college is linked to an actual job, that befefits tax payers, us paying taxes for it wouldn't be a bad thing. If it was linked to a doctor for instance working at a hospital, then it would make sense for us all to pay towards that.

Education and Health Care (not to mention our prison system) should not be for profit.

i'm not saying we need to become a socialist society, I'm just saying people should not be making a profit off things that are so important.

Education should be used to make everyones lives better, have more educated and skilled people available for jobs and in general more knowledgable citizens. You should not walk away making 100k+ off someone getting an education and the degrees/certificates required to do a neccesary job.

Health care should be as cheap as freaking possible, as efficient as possible and NOT for profit (as gaining money from peoples suffering is just wrong...which happens currently with out health care system (has h appened directly to my wife in fact).

Finally the prison system should be there to safeguard the general public from very dangerous people and try and rehabilitate those who can be (giving them skills etc) so when they get out they have more options and hopefully become productive members of society. If given such options they continue to break the laws (not drugs), then they should be sentenced to a sort of "prison town" where they can still be productive but they are closely monitored and don't enjoy normal freedoms etc (and all dangerous criminals, pedophiles (that have hurt children), murderers (multiple probably) etc...should just be sent directly to such places, or to maximum security prisons for the most dangerous).

I don't propose giving everything away for free, but I do suggest that people in general should have options, that don't put them in major debts, ether from education, health care etc. Also for those with criminal records (especially a fellony) they can have a hard time getting a job or even renting an apartment etc. If that remains the case, then obviously some form of option (jobs/places to rent etc) should be made available for them, or you are just basically setting them up to commit more crimes and go back to jail.

No, it's a terrible idea. We already have higher per capita enrollment numbers than many nations which offer it for free *and* we're doing basically nothing to control its costs (which is also likely why we have so many BS SJW college courses -- when you directly (gov subsidies, etc) and indirectly (gov-backed student loans) subsidize heavily, colleges can afford nonsense)

With the government paying for college outright the chances of having silly social programs left and right is about as likely as your average public school having an expansive music program nowadays

No, then it just becomes the new high school diploma. Not every job requires a college education, and not every person belongs in college.
Letting students refinance their debt to lower percentages would be fine, though. I also think it'd be good to go back to letting college loan debt be forgiven in bankruptcy. That law was changed like 20 years ago and I remember thinking it was a terrible idea. "But then people won't be able to secure such big loan amounts!" Yeah...and maybe that's a good thing. The cost of college keeps going up, and the loan amounts just go up with it. Maybe some supply and demand should be applied...

I like Bernie Sanders, but I've never agreed w/ him on the free college stuff. I don't care that much about his stance on it though, because it would never happen w/o a Democrat super majority in both houses of Congress, and even then they're Democrats so they'd probably fuck up passing it still.

No, they're not covering all the costs. Most colleges are funded at the state and federal level, which by the way is why in-state tuition is cheaper than out of state tuition. That's not even taking into account things like student loan forgiveness.

Fact is that your argument is shortsighted and ignorant. The job market is constantly evolving and within the coming decades people will be doing jobs that weren't anticipated today, let alone prepped for with automation. More importantly, automation has thus far been incapable of performing countless tasks effectively enough to replace people. Right now, it's not even good enough at handling certain repetitive tasks to replace people.

They're covering the costs that will be attributed to them. You don't live in the other states so why does it matter to you what their tax dollars go to? Why can't you just accept that not everyone wants to do the same thing and just move on with your life instead of throwing a fucking tantrum over what other people that you will literally never ever meet in your life do with their own life? If they want to go to college to get a degree in Labor Studies, all the more power to them. You clearly don't agree with it, so why do you care so damn much about what they do when it has little impact on your life aside from "utilizing your tax dollars incorrectly"?

We already kind of have that. College is free as long as you are smart and/or poor enough for it. It only costs for people who are trying to overachieve what they have been shown capable of handling in high school. Well, that and if you try to go to a private university (which is the same in any country).

The people who are advocating for "free college", like people advocating for "free healthcare" are really just saying we need to move the goal posts to make the statistics look "better". We have free college and free healthcare, people are just mad they aren't considered worthy of it by the current standards.

You all like to fuck with my head don't you? Of course I wish usa had free health care, dental like Canada. Oh my free college. That would be amazing. Let anyone get the education they wanted. Than on second hand If it was free just be more and more lazy people don't know what a job is. I would say if they didn't work for a schlorship let em get a job pay there ass way to school. If it was free for everyone would be great so I can't decide.

Who the fuck are you to judge people for their choice in college courses?

he's on unemployment, older, and has no college degrees, if he can't have it - no one can, ok?

It sounds great, but in practicality, no.

College shouldn't be the next thing after high school anyway. Young adults should think about what they want to do, checking out career and trade fairs, instead of college fairs. If you want to learn more, great, then go to college. If you're just going to college to get a degree for a job, then you're going for the wrong reason and just throwing away money that could be better spent on certifications, job training, apprenticeships, etc.

back in the day many people got along great and made pretty damn good money with no college education. now days almost any job really worth having requires having at least a little something beyond highschool. unless you don't mind doing physical labor jobs.

personally I think its a case of the colleges just want to much money. professors and people running the colleges get paid a tad too much imo. if they all took some pay cuts tuition could fall to a much more sensible level. mostly though I think we need to go back to not everything needing a damn degree. a lot of jobs imo are likely much easier to learn through hands on experience and who better to do that than the company you'd be working for.

not gonna comment on "BS sjw courses" BUT I was in college for criminal justice, and the teacher point blank told us the degree was mostly useless for most common professions in that work force. that it looked nice on paper and might give you a edge against another potential person, but otherwise opened no new doors in the job field for you.
