sorry, I shouldn't say "can't afford". they're fucking multi-billionaires. they can afford 2M to significantly improve the team. they don't want to.

Zack wheeler is a FA next year. he'll leave in FA and they'll need another 2-3 pitchers anyway.

it's moronic and cheap.

"Yet as they sat this week to crunch the numbers, Mets officials deduced that Gonzalez, whom the Yankees recently released, was not a sure upgrade over Vargas."

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. It doesn't matter how much of an upgrade or not he is over Vargas (he is one). He's a HUGE upgrade over the next guy up when someone gets hurt, Flexen. In this spot, you're paying for an EXTRA BODY- Insurance, not an upgrade. This is like saying "Oh we don't want an exact $2M replica of Jacob deGrom whose numbers are slightly worse, we already have one and the replica isn't a sure upgrade" - instead of wanting both.

Also then it poses the question "Well, what about Keuchel, he's for sure an upgrade?"

Plenty of times. I love Citi Field. I'd easily pick it as my favorite MLB ballpark I've been to, though I suppose that list isn't exactly a long one. I actually went to Citizens Bank last week too for the first time to see that Wheeler vs. Arrieta game. Great ballpark as well. Strangely I've only been to new Yankee Stadium once. I liked it, but Citi is definitely the better one between the two. Other than those three, I've only been to Shea, old Yankee stadium, and Camden Yards. Definitely would like to return to Camden Yards, since I was last there over a decade ago I think.

Camden is my favorite I've been to. Citi is also great.
This is my ranking of current ballparks I've been to (I've also been to Shea obv, Old Yankee, Candlestick, Jack Murphy, and Joe Robbie)

1. Camden
2. PNC
3. AT&T
---
4. Marlins (pre-changes)
5. Coors
6. Citi
7. SunTrust
---
8. Busch
9. Progressive
10. Fenway
11. Miller
12. Citizens Bank

13. Nationals

14. Minute Maid
15. Rogers Centre

30. (Tropicana)

I put the A's and Rays on here, even though I've never been to them because they're obviously last.

Yeah I remember Camden being really good, but like I said, it's been a long time since I've been there. I would love to return there for a game to truly appreciate it.

PNC, Nationals Park, and Fenway are probably the next ones on my list since they're all within driving distance.

You are the first person I've seen to not like Citi! You aren't just talking about its first 3 or so years right? I didn't like it at all initially, the first few years or so, until they made some changes- adding more history and Mets banners and stuff around the park (which was somehow completely devoid of it those first 3 years) and making the OF wall blue and orange instead of brown was important.

Have you been to others? I generally will always put anything with a roof or dome below ones that don't. Marlins park is the exception.

Yeah, totally agree with this through 2011. 2012 I think is when Citi added some character to it. It's a much nicer stadium now than 2009-2011. My biggest complaint is theres really a ton of ads on the OF wall and stuff, probably more than most stadiums, but not like a ton more- I've reluctantly accepted that this is the way it is now with basically every stadium or arena.

New Yankee feels more like city hall than a stadium, Citi had this feeling too til 2012

holy fucking shit

MLB Suspended Rhame for 2 games for "intentionally throwing at Hoskins head". What a fucking joke. It's plain as day he did not hit him on purpose. He has NO control. He's a AAA pitcher.

They can't prove intent at all and Rhame categorically denied throwing at him on purpose (I mean of course he would, but he still did , nor did he indicate in any way that he might've tried to hit him and missed or anything). There were no warnings made before, so MLB wasn't policing the call at the time.

And even if it WAS intentional, it should be WAY more than 2 days. The fact they limited it to 2 says to me they really don't think it was intentional and only did something because the Phillies or someone whined about it. Like this happened 2 days ago. Why wait until Thursday night, nearly 48 hours after the pitch?

That seems nonsensical. I get why Hoskins was mad, but nobody else has any reason to be. So much drama over what is basically a non-incident. Might actually be a good thing for the Mets though since it keeps Rhame off the mound.

he's appealing (as he should) but he got optioned anyway. Seems like a bit of a loophole, but how it works is if the suspension is upheld (which I imagine it will be b/c I feel like appeals never work, even if it's BS), is he has to serve the suspension once he's called up.

So.... see you in September, I guess when rosters expand.

Either way, it's a terrible precedent to set here, you can't claim to judge intent in a case like this.

I'd call being 17-13 with 40 WAR on the IL (still can't get used to that) pretty fortunate. Whether or not that comes undone when you face tougher teams remains to be seen but for now y'all should be thanking your lucky stars you've faced a ton of bad teams and had all these backups no one has ever heard of all become Ted Williams. That sounds like the opposite of bad luck to me. I'd also call being alive to witness multiple championships just slightly fortunate.

What's not fortunate is having Edwin Diaz give up 2 9th inning tiebreaking 2 out home runs the last 2 out of 3 games.

https://twitter.com/ktsharp/status/1123768288352321536
Edwin Diaz Career Tie-Breaking 2-Out HRs Allowed:

Last 2 Games - 2
First 200 Games - 1

woof. Also saw a stat that said opponents hit .336 vs Diaz in tie games and .160 in everything else. Obviously that's probably not meaningful, but those are career numbers so it's not insignificant.

Not blaming him for either loss though, this team just can't get it together all at once, and it's always that way. The pitching is on but the hitting does nothing, or vice versa. We finally got vintage 2018 deGrom again tonight, but of course came with that the 2018 Mets offense behind deGrom. Can't win.

They said Syndergaard's shutout + homer in a 1-0 game wasnt done since '83, but I remembered Gallardo doing that for the Brewers in '09. Turns out, after doing some fact checking, Gallardo went 8 innings that game, but likewise hit a homer in what was a 1-0 game. So close, but no cigar.

In case you needed more proof the mets are ownership is nothing but a bunch of chickenshit, they decided today to option Dom Smith, their best bench bat, and only lefty, and only backup first baseman for Adeiny Hechevarria, career like .230 hitter. Dom has been thriving in a pinch hit role, but they said "he needs to get ABs every day". what a load of bullshit. No you don't when you are thriving as a PH and have been proving it in the minors for years. He's FINALLY seeing success here.

The only logical reason why this move would be made is of course, $. They're paying Hechevarria anyway, and they save $1M by calling him up today. He gets a 1 million dollar bonus for being on the roster 150 days. There are 149 days left in the season. It's so blatant what they're doing. They are clearly not trying to have the best 25 man on the roster.

This is $3M for Hechevarria mind you, that could've gone to Gio Gonzalez or pitching depth instead.

Oh yeah, there's a reminder for you they paid THREE MILLION DOLLARS for a 3rd string shortstop.

Holy fucking hell , this franchise you guys. They clearly do not care about winning.

when you have the chance to remove a guy hitting .353 from the bench for a .220 career hitter who is better suited in AAA because he might opt out if you don't put him on the roster, you just gotta take those shots. especially when it leaves you with only righties on your bench. Lefty pinch hitters are never useful huh?

it's so obvious this franchise and the wilpons do not care about winning games.

At least Hechevarria should help out a bit with the Mets' atrocious defense. Dom's just been in an unfortunate situation this year. He's been good as a pinch hitter, but he's shown he deserves more than that. But there's just no room.

Anyway, apparently Paxton was pulled out of the Yankee game early. Damn injuries. At least things are looking good for a bunch of other Yankees injury-wise.
