i didn't look up lyrics for any of these since the first listens were meant to be just based on what i heard with no other influence. if your link was a video, i didn't watch it either for the same reason.

later, i would have looked up the lyrics to songs i felt warranted it, watched videos, etc. as i moved the rankings around.

i have no notes for this which probably means that it was during the end stretch where i was just powering through these.

so yeah that opening is great. just immediately gets right into it. no idea what the fuck he's saying aside from some words here and there but i'm hella ok with it. i'm perfectly fine with growly vocals so if you thought that that would be a deterrent you thought wrrrrrrrrooooongggg. i definitely have get urges for that kind of stuff although most of my more frequent listens tend to be more poppy/soft, especially as of late. though tbh i'm still not at the level where i feel like i would be able to sit through a whole album of it without tuning out at some point. just had a random thought that the 'swing' refers to body hanging from a noose. i wouldn't actually know.

He Is Legend - Mean Shadow

i have down here "I knew youd come through with at least one song like this" which probably means i was unimpressed with your earlier ones lmao. but yeah i love the switching between the softer/harder parts. generally i value eclecticism that still results in a catchy fun time and while this song in particular may not be a shining example of that, the variance is still in that same vein. i think i liked how the song ended more the first time i heard it because listening to it now, it leaves me with an unfinished feeling with the fade out. i'm pretty sure the lyrics are emo stuff that walks that fine line between genuinely touching and eye-rollingly corny. i'm fine with both since i have the power of nostalgia on my side.

and i just realized the company name is "Tragic Hero Records" lol

i have here "subdued" like it doesn't go hard ENOUGH. not a big fan of the vocal effect(?) and the more electronic-y vibe

the last one i'm pretty sure i thought was just generic sounding

it's fine. i could have it playing in the background but i don't know that i'd actually go out of my way to play it. kind of sounds similar to other stuff in the genre and it still has that mass-produced feel. also i have very mixed feelings about rap verses in pop songs. it feels like a lose-lose situation so many times because it just seems obligatory and interrupts the flow of the song for me while having otherwise good rappers drop one of the wackest verses in their careers because they have to neuter it for radio play and casual audiences. i guess this is more about my experience for english-language pop songs but maybe that resentment unconsciously carries over. BTS def made me feel differently about the issue at times but i don't extend that same grace to other groups yet.

7th Street - Closer

i actually can't believe this is one spot above Say My Name because i like this waaaaaay better listening to them now and could see it going higher based on how i feel about the ones above it now. probably why you shouldn't take the list after first listens as too accurate. the naked-sounding instrumentals coming together, the higher-pitched vocals during the chorus, and could definitely stick in my head way easier.

hey kayden kross is in the video. i never really watched her but nice

so despite me saying i didn't watch any of the videos, i had embedded links on at the time and the thumbnail for this was the goblin mask next to the girl's ass so that probably influenced it because the vocalist's voice is hilarious and actually makes the goblin imagery really prominent in my mind as i listen. really catchy chorus and i love the twangs from like 0:36

DOLL$BOXX?

When I talked about having high hopes based on one thumbnail, it was this song.

one of the girls (vocalist) looked so cool that i was pretty sure i would at least like it. i love the vocals and how they're accompanied by the screams in bursts. i'm sure i've heard more than a few songs that do a similar thing so it wasn't exactly surprising but i like it every time. instrumentally it's fine but vocals main reason it got as high as it did i think. don't know how it would compare against the rest of the field after repeated listens though.

If you liked the vocals in DOLL$BOXX you'll be pleased to know that the vocalist, Fuki, is in several bands.
