Personally, If I don't talk to them regularly I do not see the point on having them on Facebook.

There are a few people I know that have upwards of 3000, and I am sure there are many that have way more than that. I myself have about 200 and even then I feel thats too much.

Don't think I've ever cleaned my Facebook friends list but I am also a little picky about who I accept and have my profile set to private so only friends-of-friends can see/add me. By being picky I mean something along the lines of I have met you on multiple occasions and might see you again in the future. I've had some friends/family-of-friends add me before but I have never met them once in my life so those folks I just ignore.

I can only assume those who have friends in the hundreds or thousands started their account in the early days of Facebook, travel around a lot and meet a lot of other folks, are very liberal on who they accept, are very liberal on who they add, and/or are famous to some degree on the internet.

That does seem excessive. Even if one assume some folks met a lot in their years from elementary school, middle school, high school, college, the work force, traveling, etc. I'm hard pressed to imagine someone met in-person people in the thousands. Do they have a bunch of followers for some Twitter, Instagram, etc. account or something?

Was gonna say less than 200 seems "ideal" only to realize I have 351 people on my friends list. I'm sure at least a few dozens are high school friends that I added when I first created the account in 2009/2010 and another few dozens are college friends who I haven't seen in nine some years. If I were to clean my list to only those that I am in regular contact with, I'm sure it'll be less than 200 people.

I use them as hubs. They usually share lots of info. And can share info from you, as well... Like about class reunions or someone getting married...

Fake, superficial folk who believe adding loads of Facebook means they are popular when the reality is everyone would know all those folk are not friends with said person. I personal only add folk who are in my life/I want in my life. I won't add folk just because I know of them and have rejected a lot of friends request for that reason.

Depends what you use if for. If you use it as a pissing contest sure. Personally I find it to be a great way to keep in contact with folk. It's also much more easy to tell folk who I like to add me of social media than give them my phone number or they can randomly add me. If it wasn't for social media I wouldn't keep in contact with some folk as much. Probably go back to the days of writing and posting letters. Although I admit I miss that.

As for the question, someone probably goes overboard with adding family, friends, co-workers, fellow students.. their Uber driver, person who sold them lunch.. the barista of their coffee shop.. all the people from a page based on a hobby, game etc..
