Technically this wasn't the first time I beat the game because dying in the prologue gives its own ending.

It does, I just forgot if you had to die particularly early or not and so if you making it to the boss bypassed it. Guess not!

Fun fact but some supplemental material for the first Nier about stuff happening after it confirmed there were aliens well before Automata, just didnt want to say anything til you got to this part.

Its mentioned in said supplemental material that Emile fought them, and is possibly the reason that the robots have heads that kind of look like his (they may have modeled them after the earths greatest warrior] though I dont think that has ever been confirmed.

Hell there was a concert that introduces characters that you havent even seen yet.
And that stage play came out before the game was even announced!

It's not just supplemental stuff, this is explained in an end-game sidequest IIRC

Yeah Yoko Taro likes putting plot important stuff in stage plays for some reason <_<

There's also one about Automata that explains some things that the game leaves as a question mark to think about.

Finally have time to play again. What a shit week.

Romeos and Juliets truly a tragedy for the ages. The Bard would have been jealous.

better than the actual Romeo and Juliet imhotbqh

tbh I might agree. I am not a fan of the actual play. Generally speaking I'd say I like Shakespeare but Romeo and Juliet is not one of his good plays imo.

Now I just fought off a horde of drunk robots who wanted to play with me. Was getting my ass kicked until I realized that they are slow moving and that their only attack is very slow and telegraphed short range vomit (???) attack. So they were easily dispatched by just kiting them around and using range attacks while jumping over/past them if they got too close.

Strange quest for what seemed at first like a normal collectathon.

Yeah, Romeo and Juliet is the most overrated work of Shakespeare.

and yeah long range is always good when you're fighting big hordes

It's actually not my least favorite of his I know of. That "honor" goes to Merchant of Venice. Romeo and Juliet might still get the "most overrated" title either way though

Did a few more sidequests because who cares about the real story lol

--One of them features an android seeking revenge against machines, only to be killed by a blood-soaked machine also evidently seeking revenge against androids, who we proceed to kill in self-defense. Yikes. Violence only begets violence. Then when we return we tell the androids friend that they were killed by a machine, after which she leaves under suspicion circumstances leaving all her equipment with us. Double-yikes. Please come back... (she won't because the quest is listed as completed RIP)

--On the topic of violence, Jackass also tells us in a different quest that androids (probably by design) derive pleasure from battle. Triple-yikes.

--"It's harder to understand each other since we disconnected ourselves from the network"--"Mother" machine on her relationship with her "son". I didn't totally realize there was a machine network which I guess shouldn't be surprising, but this bit was cool. Also 2B seems into the idea of disconnecting which is also good.

Not a complete list of the quests I've done but those were the cool ones. Now for the actual story...maybe.

man

I remember the first time I tried playing the game, I did this at more or less the exact same point

Then I put the game down and didn't go back to it for like 18 months LOL

Good to see you probably won't fall victim to the same thing.

I did do some more of the main story last night!

We went to meet the nice machines in the Forest Kingdom so that we can learn more about them.

And by "went to meet" and "learn more about" I of course mean that we annihilated any one of those foolish machines who even dared show their face in front of us. (Meanwhile 9S is still going on about "but loyalty is far too complex an emotion for machines to understand" even though we've seen it and other things a hundred times already. He'll catch on eventually...)

Then we meet A2--the mysterious traitor android who is obviously important because I seem to remember that's the name of one of the other characters I get to control later on, iirc. She kills the baby machine king because ??? and then attacks us because ??? and then leaves us with some cryptic messages as she jumps out the window and disappears to...somewhere? (She is full of mystery ok?)

Despite what that tongue-in-cheek summary might imply I do like the inclusion of that character archetype at this point in the story. I'm hoping it will maybe be the catalyst for 2B and 9S to start doing their own thing also. (9S already wants to ask Pascal about her in person so maybe it's starting?) But, it's very hard to say a lot about A2 at this point. Completely off-the-wall prediction right now is that she's actually the character I was controlling in the prologue but uh who knows lol.

By the way the main story is super easy when you've been ignoring it in order to do all these sidequest featuring enemies that are all 15-20 levels higher than the enemies in the main story at that point.

God I am awful at these flight segments where your flight unit has the ability to rotate. At least it sent me back to the beginning of the flight mission when I died though and not to my last save.

Also that A2 quest lending more credence to my "I was controlling A2 in the prologue" theory.

Well a lot happened. So far this route seems to be playing out more or less like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ufmrn7BCuA" data-time="

--After the fight with the giant water mecha-colossus, 9S is mising and we have to search for him. Thankfully, we find some random YoRHa who is able to put a marker on the map for us. Now, it is an absolute enigma to me how--based solely off 9S's flight trajectory following the explosion--this android was able to predict that 9S was (as the map marker indicated) being crucified in the center of a secret manufactured city of sand that can that can only be accessed via elevator from the deepest part of an underground chasm located at least several miles away. But well maybe I shouldn't be asking questions here.

--Anyways we find 9S and beat up Adam, who decided he was going to disconnect himself from the network and risk death in order to better understand the instincts that drive humans. I'd say bad decision, but well he actually seemed pretty happy here until after he'd already lost.

--Not to be outdone, the rest of the machines who get disconnected as a result of Adam dying start their own religious suicide cult which is all kinds of fucked up.

--Side note: Man Pascal absolutely does not give a fuck. I already commented on him diving into the middle of hellfire during that one fight as if it were nothing. Here, after traveling to the depths of the abandoned factory and witnessing literal thousands of his own brethren ceremoniously commit suicide while the remainder cower in terror and confusion, his very thought upon leaving is "You know I'd really like to go back down there in a bit to explore the factory."

--And after this we learn Eve is fucking pissed and is murdering everything in sight. The resistance camp is already finished and Pascal's village looks to be next on the chopping block. Guess this is what happens when the machines get serious. RIP...well...everyone, probably.

I have some overall thoughts on the game, but I think I'm nearing the end of this route at this point, so I'll probably just hold off until then. It is good though.

On that note, I did know going into the game that the story uses a route structure somehow, though I don't really know much else other than that I control 9S and A2 in other routes. I did look at the quest list on the wiki to see if I'd permanently missed any, and it looks like I coincidentally did the few that were listed as "2B only"? There are a few quests I didn't finish and got locked out of, but it looks like I can still do those further down the road based on this. So maybe I'm still good on that front. (I don't know if this is the only route where you use 2B anyways, but yeah)
