Recently watched all the Scream movies. I was very pleasantly surprised by the first one. I was totally expecting it to be a typical Friday the 13th horror borefest, but it was quite good.

Also watched Rambo for the first time yesterday. I wasn't as action-packed as I thought it would be, which I didn't mind. I do enjoy that Stallone basically doesn't say a thing for the entire movie but then the final five minutes of the movie are just him talking. Pretty well done.

Scream 1 and First Blood indeed rock

I watched the Main Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot

it was alright, felt really long, not sure what it was going for tonally cuz the Hitler scenes were dope but the sad Sam Elliot scenes really dragged and the Bigfoot scenes were something out of a Z horror movie

Scream is so great both as a face value slasher and as a rib on the genre. As someone who's seen most of the big slasher movies, it's still a treat to watch - and I try to do so every Halloween!

The only person didn't really have a great decade then was Eddie Murphy bar a couple films but the stinkers outweighed the hits.

In my experience, John Wick was a series that I was vaguely aware of and sporadically heard pretty good things about, but it never seemed that buzzed-about until about a year ago. But when the hype took off, holy hell, it took off. Every social circle I'm in - IRL or online - has seemed head-over-heels about it since mid-2018.

I plan to watch them at some point as well. I'm always happy to see Keanu succeed.

What did everyone here think of Boyhood? I really wanted to like it but I just think it was so boring, it felt like the movie had ended 5 times but Richard Linklater kept wanting to add some more scenes. It definitely would have benefitted from being shorter. The subject material was definitely not compelling enough to stretch over that runtime, eventually the charm of "they filmed this for 12 years!!" definitely wore off.

The main kid was a pretty awful actor but it was a gamble casting a kid so I kind of give them a pass. Patricia Arquette really hits it out of the park though.

People keep bringing this up as one of their favorite movies of the past decade and I have no idea why unless you were absolutely enamored with the concept.

I have absolutely no idea. What comes to mind immediately is that Gene Siskel was WAY too harsh on it, think he was offended at some of the supposed stereotypes and thought the plot didn't break any new ground. I thought it still at least had the John Hughes touch I liked so much in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but felt like the plot never really seemed to go anywhere. Come to think of it, that might have been a problem with Ferris Bueller too, but it was largely masked by amazing comic timing from the cast and director.

Oh yeah Gene's review of Ferris Bueller's Day Off was dumb crap as well, what kind of complaint is "every scene is done better in another movie"? That's not really the point of movies like these. At least Roger rated the films more appropriately even if it ultimately only came to a marginal recommendation (he gave both films 3 stars).

Beyond just the production, Boyhood offers a rather uncommon take, at least for American cinema. It really is just a slice of life story, and the use of the same actors for such a long time reinforces this idea. Like, I don't think this is a hit for being 'compelling' in the way a narrative-focused film is; it's an exercise in excess, focusing on the bits that are commonly cut when people are trying to make a more striking narrative. So, for me, it's compelling in a different way, as an exploration of a life in full, even the parts that don't seem to 'matter' (as they very much do for the characters).

It's fun to compare it to Linklater's Before trilogy, which seems fueled by the same concept of watching time go by, but where Before simply checks in every 9 years and shows the entirety of a key day, Boyhood flips it and explores the little moments between. There's a contradiction in detail here, where Before skips nearly all of the central relationship but dives very deep into single moments, while Boyhood captures the blur of a childhood in full. I think Boyhood would lose its purpose if it was shorter.

i'm doing a thing where i watch a bunch of movies from one year. like anything that i even have a remote interest in. picked 2010 because that's coincidentally the year my favorite movie and my least favorite movie came out.

looked through like over 350. currently have 45 watched, 64 to watch and a bunch of stuff that i thought were notable for some reason but not of personal interest.

if anybody knows any super obscure but good stuff from 2010 that i might have potentially missed combing through year lists, let me know!

i'm obviously not going to finish this any time soon. it's more like an eventual goal that i'll be working towards on the side.

TBH I heavily respect them both, but it's hard to deny that they had their misses. Although a lot of that is just hindsight, and you could say they were more reacting to movies than truly going in-depth with them. See Siskel having a tough time wrapping his head around The Silence of the Lambs of all movies.

Most of my point about Ferris Bueller is that the film has legitimate flaws which Gene didn't touch on, instead going into stuff that doesn't matter. Oh, Ferris doesn't say much insightful in the film? Well for someone in the target audience he is. At least Ebert took this viewpoint into account. Admittedly that's one of my favorite films of all time, but still.

I actually liked DM3.

A) The constant 80s (my all-time favorite decade for Music and Film) references
B) An actual Threatening Villain
C) The splintered plot (Dru/Gru, Lucy/Margot, Edith/Agnes, Minion escape)

I still think there's at least one more movie left in the franchise.

I took advantage of one of my local movie channels showing a marathon of musicals to watch Singin' in the Rain for the first time and while I'm not rushing to say it's one of my favorite movies or anything, it did live up to its reputation. Especially like how affectionate towards Hollywood the film is.

Also Debbie Reynolds is such a dead ringer for her daughter.

Singin' in the Rain is a wonderful, colorful musical that also touches on one of the more interesting periods of American cinema. Along with Sunset Boulevard, which takes a darker look, it's nice to have a film that explores the impact of sound on cinema, how it disrupted an art form that developed its own style of physical acting to compensate for the silence.

I feel like there's a lot of stuff in each era of cinema that simply gets lost in time; we talk as if film is constantly evolving, but there are certain styles that get lost over time. Silent cinema holds up well to me because it operates so differently than everything that comes after; Singin' in the Rain falls into the same boat with its use of Technicolor. Those colors might be over-saturated, but it adds a certain aesthetic appeal we don't really get anymore.

That's another reason I am bothered when people talk like Citizen Kane is acclaimed solely for its influence; the largest part of its acclaim comes from its black and white cinematography and especially its heavy use of shadows, which means it perfected a style that isn't really even used anymore besides a few art films.

I agree with this

I've seen the first two and Minions, and legitimately the only real issue I have with the series is how it became less focused on the main characters and more on the minions, which were already the worst part of the movies.

But the relationship between Gru and the kids and their adventures are always good fun

Singin' in the Rain, not to knock on its quality, but it does kind of feel like it has some kind of "postage stamp" appeal, which doesn't make it hard to see how it largely flew under the radar in its own time compared to its massive reputation since. Also find it kind of funny how this movie got no Oscar nominations, yet a decade later it probably would have been considered prime-Oscar bait.

It took me the opening montage of Lockwood's career up to that point to understand what the film was trying to do, but once I did, I was hooked.
