A bit belated since the deadline was yesterday, which was the actual day... but happy anniversary, Char and Genny.

Anyway, welcome to the RomCom list, I'm your host because I am one of like two or three users who actually likes the genre, which I'm sure is a low percent on this board as a whole as well. Haven't heard too much negativity yet but I'm sure I'll see some come these write-ups. So get in your taxis and immediately leave them after you're stuck in traffic because you're in New York, take out that fine wine when you get home. Take a drink and enjoy seeing our ride and learn if there's anything watchable because of someone sharing your sense of humor.

These were my victims (and myself):
Charon
Genny
Inviso
Johnbobb
JONA
Karo
KBM
Scarlet
Snake

Here's the movies we went through:

It Happened One Night (1934)
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Sabrina (1954)
Annie Hall (1977)
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Can't Buy Me Love(1987)
Working Girl (1988)
Pretty Woman (1990)
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
One Fine Day (1996)
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Wedding Singer (1998)
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
What Women Want (2000)
Serendipity (2001)
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
Love Actually (2003)

The Proposal (2009)
It's Complicated (2009)

And of course, the points of all 30 movies.

When creating the list, to actually have a decent chance at removing movies, I kept off duplicates of leads (so Roberts movie snubbed due to a street walker). That did make me accidentally overlook Ryan Reynolds... but he's the only lead that ended up duplicated. It's also why I have a major snub in You've Got Mail. I actually have a little bit of extra info on that in my write-up of the Hanks/Ryan movie that is in, ahaha~

It actually doesn't. Probably because all the romance with the MC is him with that pie.

Says it's a teen sex comedy, so more a straight comedy than a romantic one.

Oh right, I utterly spaced on her between the year difference between the two movies and that I watched Annie Hall in like early December vs Something's Gotta Give in February. Okay, so I have those two, though that really was a difference between younger and older Keaton, which I feel is enough of a change. I don't regret leaving both movies on.

I feel like Four Weddings and a Funeral is a pretty big snub, regardless of the lead overlap, as it's pretty much the movie that created the Brit-rom-com (as far as I know). Also, Crazy Rich Asians, but I suppose you didn't want to include anything too recent. I'll still be following along regardless, though.

It's pretty difficult to not have snubs, even if I went up to 40, I saved my viewers the discomfort of having 40 movies to rank though. Might have been funny to have the latter one since a few weeks ago we were talking about actors/actresses who have been on a few different lists and that would have added Michelle Yeoh to this one (previously on at least Bond, Martial Arts, and Sci-fi).

I'm having a very hard time parsing this hint. The name of the movie is used in what, the movie itself? (Wouldn't that be almost all of them?) "Alas"? Or are you talking about people's writeups or personal rankings?

Yes to former, ignore the alas, I was basically just finishing the sentence. The fact that the movie's title was used in the movie likely plays no part to anyone's ranking of a movie. Sorry about the confusion.

The first four on the list are awesome, especially Bringing Up Baby and The Shop Around the Corner. Warm Bodies is underrated too!

It's not on the list, but I recently watched 50 First Dates with my girlfriend since she LOVES that movie. It was a lot better than I expected tbh. While it's really not funny at all, it's genuinely sweet and has good cast chemistry. Drew Barrymore in particular managed to warm my frigid heart a little.

"'I wanna rent you!' The most romantic line in film history. As painfully 80s cliche as the movie starts out, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy any of it. It's a weird mix of really disliking the initial concept but still finding it oddly charming. Highlight was definitely the dance scene." ~Johnbobb

"Another high school drama similar to the movie a year before, also with a girl making a choice between two guys. This one, however, is the nerd who bribed her into dating him after she stained an outfit she snagged from her mothers closet. This one explores social groups and hits home if you ever felt isolated due to them, though my high school did not really have a bullying rift between the upper class and the lower class. Anyway, she starts to develop feelings for him and he will not listen as he is too excited for his new lifestyle. While things ending happily definitely did not show the moral that money cant buy you love, it certainly bought her attention which created love. It also shows that lies cannot forge relationships." ~Wickle

"A dweeb in high school 'rents' a cheerleader for a month in order to make him popular. Though this does work somehow, it has the side effect of making him the biggest douche ever and eventually leads him even more of an outcast than he was before. Everything of course works out in the end and he gets the girl for real.
It's a very standard by-the-numbers kind of story, and while it is not excruciating to watch still leaves one wanting a little something more." ~Karo

"If the teenage boy had been born in the unit's time, he could simply just purchase a girlfriend unit and for a more affordable price too. The premise of the movie leads to some amusing antics and there is some decent chemistry between the two leads. The movie almost had an interesting message about social cliques and being yourself but doesn't quite execute it well." ~JONABOT1

"I think this very well may be the least memorable movie on this list. Like, at least it's named after a good song, but wow. It's every '80s teen movie clich all wrapped up into one with nothing to set it apart from its contemporaries. The whole 'we're only pretending to date on a bet but hold on maybe we actually like each other' plotline was already pretty worn-out by 1987, as was the 'nerd transforms into non-nerd through the power of Hollywood' aspect. Not that these things haven't been done well, but this is a movie that's just joylessly going through the motions. It's a cynical byproduct of the 80s that wastes its time cherry-picking plot points and gags from better movies instead of actually having something original to say. The one positive thing I can say is that I didn't find myself actively offended by anything in this maybe it's just because I have a higher tolerance for shitty relationship dynamics being passed off as okay in older movies, but there's certainly some more actively insulting shit on this list, which is pretty much the only thing that kept this out of the bottom 5." ~KBM

"This movie suffers the same shortcoming that at least two other rom coms on this list have to date in that the lead goes for the wrong love interest. Can't Buy Me Love just does it a little better than the others and with more entertainment value. Still, this movie takes a huge downturn right after the line "Me? No, NEVER!" Starting from there, the response our male lead gives our female lead when she asks him to never change, our protagonist takes a cliff dive from misinformed but good intentioned to miserable douche. I just cannot in good conscious root for this guy. Over the course of one hour (real time obvies, not movie time) he does the following:
- Sells out
- Abandons his true friends and interests
- Dumps a girl who's into the real him
- Throws shit on his best friend's house
- Scores with a sleeze by QUOTING PRIVATE POETRY THAT WAS SHARED ONLY WITH HIM
- Indirectly ruins aforementioned girl's (admittedly broken) relationship (and of course doesn't apologize)

And he only makes up for all this by sticking up for his former best friend AFTER he becomes a social pariah. I'm supposed to buy this change for the better just because EVERYBODY CLAPPED? No, I don't think so. In my mind the movie ended when the girl drove off with her friends, because picking him or ANY of the dudes in this movie other than maybe ginger nerd friend was the wrong choice." ~Genny

"The title, it turns out is a lie. See: Pretty Woman.
Rating: 40/100" ~Scarlet

"The only good thing about movie this was The Beatles song it was named after." ~Stifled

"Perhaps led by the most deplorable lead in this entire project, this film suffers mostly from how much I just hate this guy. Now buying the "affection" of a female, mostly so you can escape the doldrums of unpopularity doesn't necessarily make you a terrible person. It makes you desperate sure, but I can forgive that. The premise was easy to see coming; nerdy guy slowly makes popular chick realize what a nice guy he actually is and she'll fall in love with him. But what's going to be the conflict to stop them from getting together? Could it be a douchebag boyfriend of her's getting in the way? Could it be popular douches from school mocking her for being with this guy? Nah... it's a douche though. And that douche is named Ronald Miller. I mean, when he is overheard reading a private poem Cindy read to him in confidence so he can score with the school slut I knew there was no amount of redemption arc that could make this character worthwhile again. Yeah he got everything he ever wanted, then he lost it, but then he still gets to end up with the girl despite being the worst person ever. Maybe he did learn something, but by no means did he deserve this girl at the end. That's not how life works; you don't make a horrible mistake and then get immediately forgiven by the same person and ride off into the sunset. You are supposed to learn from your mistakes moving forward and apply them to your future self. I feel with her willingness to still be with him can only do him harm since he'll believe that he can fix anything with enough heroic gestures or words." ~Charon

"A clich-ridden charisma void with the most obvious plot beats, music choices, and cardboard characters as humanly possible. The main draw of the film is sketchy, and it all ends up how you would expect, and that makes for a film that you dont even have to watch to know exactly what happens." ~Snake

"The title, combined with the obvious implication of the first fifteen minutes started me off on a bad foot with this film. And it just kept getting worse. Likeif the film was 90 minutes of this super popular cheerleader learning to accept and love some dorky guy (while he becomes more socially confident and whatnot), and thats the ENTIRE movie? Itd be standard, but tolerable. But then. We spend about thirty minutes of the dork slowly using his new girlfriend to become popular, emulating the popular kids and becoming just as much of a vapid asshole as the rest of them. Then he dumps his girlfriend and continues living as an even more unbearable prick. Of course, the whole scam gets blown up and weve got even MORE movie of him IMMEDIATELY becoming an outcast, only to make everything all better by saving his former BFF from a bully. EVERYONE in this movie is awful, and the only saving grace is the hilarity of the cheerleaders REAL boyfriend being such a terrible actor when he calls her a prostitute." ~Inviso

"A fat dweeb who grows up to be a successful record producer returns to his hometown and meets up with an old friend from high school.
The movie is extremely funny, Ryan Reynolds was born to play the part of an insane asshole and he delivers just as you would expect.
But my god is the romance fucking awful. Lets lay it all down, shall we? The protagonist was this obese and staggeringly ugly kid who has one of the pretty, popular girls in school as his friend. Is he happy that this goddess would not only want to look at someone like him, but want to be around him constantly?
Ah hah ha ha ha ha hah, no. He wants to fuck her of course, because everything else is meaningless unless he can jam his pudgy cock into her vagina.
After blowing her off after she finally wants to sleep with him, he goes back to L.A. and then changes his mind because who knows and so he flies back to Podunk to fuck her for real I guess.
I don't think there is a movie that leaves such a sour taste in the mouth at a happy ending as this one. This twit by no means deserves his happily ever after and if there was any justice in the world he would have died of heart disease when he was a teenager." ~Karo

"The movie is dumb. It's a dumb concept with a fat suit and plenty of cliches and physical comedy that only lands like half the time. But it's still pretty fun, mostly because it's a handful of really funny people doing what they do best. Nobody can play a terrible goofball quite like 2000s Anna Farris. That being said, remember when Amy Smart was in EVERYTHING in the mid-2000s? Weird even seeing her now. " ~Johnbobb

"On paper, there is a ton of stuff to annoy me in this movie. The main character is especially unlikable (as far as nice guys go), and some of the humor is kinda lowbrow in an unpleasant way. But dammit if I dont find the constant slapfights between Chris and his brother amusing. And dammit if I dont find Chris mother hilariously quirky. Seriously, this movie has some solid little gags. Its not the most solid film ever, but its not completely awful. Plus, theres plenty of physical punishment for an otherwise godawful human being in the lead role. And despite her being more than just a bit annoying, I think Anna Faris was DECENT in certain scenes. She was at her best when she was being a complete psychopath, instead of just a spoiled brat. In other words, this had its moments and was okay. Nothing truly amazing, but okay. It made me laugh a few times, at the very least." ~Inviso

"Im a sucker for both Anna Faris and Tasty Coma Wife, so despite a clearly National Lampoon-quality script (how appropriate for Reynolds Comma Ryan), I wasnt unentertained by this preposterous movie that featured slightly less egregious fat suiting than Norbit. I have fond memories of getting my first handjob sophomore year while watching this movie, so I decided to give three extra rating points to this movie for that. Thanks, Ryan Reynolds!
Rating: 53/100" ~Scarlet

"I didnt expect this to be a super zany slapstick comedy going in, but here we are. The movie got some good laughs from me, but my issue was with the main couple. Both actors are great, but the characters themselves are awful together. I did not want them to end up together at all and I feel like that pulled the movie down as a result. The ending in particular felt forced just to wrap things up. Ignoring that misstep, however, I still had a good time watching it." ~Stifled

"So in the 2000s, teenagers came up with a term to explain how sometimes a girl is really close to you, but just is not going to have sex with you since theres just that special relationship between the two of you where you are the person she can turn to when things go wrong. The movie is written with the teenage mentality that girls are wrong for having male friends and major alpha teens are going to grow up to be fat, balding, drunks. Also that guys who cannot get the girl they want because of looks will grow up to be womanizing pricks after they become good looking. I might as well additionally say that the writer thought it was funny for some teenager to tell a masturbation joke in front of his mom and the woman he beats it too, and both play stupid to what the joke is about. There were a couple funny things, but a couple characters were just cesspools of stupid writing." ~Wickle

"I wanted to like this more than I did. The premise is interesting, and can probably be identified with by a lot of guys, including me. I had a friend just like that in high school. The thing about this movie is that it spends no time showing you why Jamie decides she's now interested in Chris. We don't get to see that development at all however, and I'm left thinking "so because he lost a lot of weight and became a successful and attractive Ryan Reynolds, she's okay with dating him now". The movie never does anything to prove this wrong either really. Why is she more keen on him now then when he was in high school? She never professes her feelings all that much to be honest. The crazy pop star is also and odd diversion and really makes for some awkward pacing, especially at the end when he flies between LA and his hometown in the course if like 5 minutes of screentime." ~Charon

"It's amazing Ryan Reynolds developed a successful career with early hits like Just Friends (and The Green Lantern) under his belt. I'm well aware he's a good actor, it just doesn't show in this movie. I can't feel for his character- not the younger fat "nice guy" or the hot jaded womanizer. Jessie ain't much better. With no explanation as to why she goes from being just friends with him as a teenager to into him romantically when he's wealthy and handsome. It just ultimately seems shallow and not at all what the movie was going for and some simple character development could have knocked this a few spots higher." ~Genny

"The unit seems to be under the belief that this movie was made for the purpose of making jokes at the expense of those with a wider body mass than average. None of the characters were of any interest to the unit, therefore he didn't care if the main characters got together or not. Some of the shenanigans stuck with the unit's memory storage, even if they weren't particularly good but it's enough to not get last." ~JONABOT1

"Just when I'd thought I'd found the bottom of the rom-com barrel in my #28 and #29, I watched this. Y'know, Ryan Reynolds' character is just such a Nice Guy, it's just too bad he's fat and ugly. Ten years later: He looks like Ryan Reynolds! And the guy who was dating his crush is fat and ugly now! This is an unpleasant, gross, mean-spirited movie that feels like it was written by an incel. Anna Faris is here too for no other reason than to act like an idiot and complicate things so we can stretch this extremely thin premise to 90 minutes. None of it's funny, none of it's engaging, and within five minutes of putting it on I just desperately wanted it to be over." ~KBM

"This film is just absolutely full of itself. I like Ryan Reynolds generally but hes obnoxious here, and so is the rest of the cast. The plot is pure unrealistic fantasy and frankly cringy. This friend zone crap is always so overblown out of proportion, its not really that serious." ~Snake

" ~Just Friends

I think there's a conflict of interest here.
