Oh, that's really historically accurate, I guess!).

Holy fuck at that episode 6 ending though. A string of events I've been dying to see happen all happening in a row. Vanya manifesting her powers AND finding that book so she'll be on to this obvious weirdo. Hazel making his break from the organization, and massively outplaying Cha Cha while doing it. Luther realizing what an asshole dad was. Allison and Luther working out this tension. Mom coming clean with Diego on shit. Klaus getting sober.

Literally all the things I wanted. AND THEN THEY JUST TOOK IT ALL AWAY

Yeah that was so great/awful!

Just finished it. Loved it

Five
Klaus
Vanya
Ben
Diego
Allison
Luther

Five and Klaus killed it. Every scene with them was ridiculous entertaining. Didn't really enjoy the Luther love arc.
Ben gets extra points mainly because of Klaus. I just wish they went into detail about how he died.

No and I loved that. None of the other kids moms were pregnant before the day. He was born on the same day to a mother that was married and pregnant in a completely normal birth. But because it was the same day he believed he HAD to be one of them because he had to be special.

don't want spoilers so not gonna read the rest of the topic, but felt the need to talk about the show

I just finished the 3rd episode. Thoughts so far:
-Klaus is great. Hazel is great. Ellen Page is a great actress being completely wasted so far.
-Show is well shot, and I'm definitely curious about the greater mysteries
-Luther's bodysuit is godawful. Like they made zero effort trying to make it look realistic, which is bizarre given that they already have a CGI monkey character.
5eSEwZZ
-The writing is so bad. The dialogue is cliche and forced and the character motivations more often than not don't make sense. Any attempt at subtle exposition is ruined by the fact that the writers assume the viewer is dumb.
-What is going on with their powers? Why is it a mystery how the dad died when one of the siblings can literally talk to the dead? Why isn't that a bigger deal?
-The attack on the academy at the end of episode 3 is a mess. Literally Luther's one thing is that he's super strong, and then he still loses a 1v1 fist fight against Hazel? Allison just decides not use her power because she's pissed off (that was literally the excuse, "I don't need to cuz this bitch just pissed me off"), even when they're obviously losing the fight against people trying to kill them? Diego is even worse; he throws knives at their helmets, and when that doesn't work, tries to headbutt them. And then spends most of the rest of the fight running and hiding, which is especially frustrating after finishing Daredevil and seeing Bullseye, who has basically the same powers, handled so much better. And THEN, after they refused or failed to use their variety of superpowers to take down these two, they blame VANYA for being a liability because she doesn't have powers? (which, she obviously has powers, right? I mean come on) Like excuse you Allison, you're the one who actively decided to not use your power to stop the bad guys so how are you any different?

so essentially I'm just really intrigued by the general premise and world and performances, etc. but goddamn the dialogue and logic behind most of the actions is frustrating

This is so true. The amount of forced exposition throughout the entire season is baaaaaaad.

I was actually on my way back to the topic to re-complain about that scene, Johnbob, because I can't stop thinking about how all these people with powers get devastated by two regular people, ESPECIALLY Luther. That was just terrible.

(late-season spoilers)

It's even worse when later in the season after Hazel's faceturn, he directly references how Luther "just got right back up after I dropped a chandelier on him", even though A) He didn't get up that quickly, and B) Hazel literally wasn't even there when he got up, so why is Hazel in awe of this guy?

This should already be obvious by now I think? Klaus can't talk to the dead while he's doped up. That's kinda the whole reason for his drug problem.

I got the impression it was left intentionally vague, if they wanted to add some as villains or whatever later

Do they ever explain how hazel and cha-cha were able to go toe to toe with #1 in hand combat? It didn't break immersion, I just assumed they had powers from somewhere, given that they're extradimensional supercops or whatever.

Allison not using her powers was annoying, but I was eventually able to rationalize this because she is explicitly avoiding doing so due to family/morality issues. Diego just kind of sucks because he's trying to be a semi-nonlethal batman when his powers are just knives. Again, maybe H+CC have powers. Who knows.

and i'll agree that the dialogue isn't amazing. It isn't terrible on the grand scale, either. i'd put it at about a 6/10

i was actually worried in the first episode just from the structure.

there are so many shows that try to introduce like 8 main characters right at the beginning, with the end result being that none are interesting. this show managed to actually make them all distinct and worthwhile

but he talks to Ben pretty frequently, so there has to be some times he's not doped enough to talk to the dead. Why can't he just talk to the dad then?

And even if he's too dumb to think of that, why wouldn't one of the others notice him talking to Ben and be like, "Hey, idiot, ask dad who killed him"

Klaus is pretty great. The dialogue is only ever average but I think Ellen Page gets better in it.

I think theyre trying to deliberately go with a unnatural look and feel to Luthor. But it does just translate as bad CGI.

They all suck at using their powers kinda. Except Rumor and she has personal reasons. Klaus cant even try using his while hes not sober, Ben come without him even trying, I think. Luthor is way too slow and uncomfortable in his body. And Diego thinks hes much better than he is.

I kinda assumed Hazel had super-strength. He is tanky as anything and never goes down or even looks like hes in any pain during any of the fights where he takes hits. Maybe invulnerability of some kind? Maybe hes just impressed by Luthor cause hes never met someone as strong as himself.

Just finished episode 8

I'm really enjoying the development of Vanya's character, and it even makes a lot more sense how flat her character was early on (she literally had to be for her character to make sense) and her relationship with Leonard has become one of my favorite parts of the show. Hell, I know he's evil and more often than not I can still easily get what Vanya sees in him.

Also good riddance to Allison; honestly the worst character and it wasn't particularly close.

5 attacking the commission was great but since then the main four haven't been doing much of anything.

Hazel still the best. Cha-Cha still kinda lame by comparison

it feels like a lot more than a week has gone by since 5 said the apocalypse was coming in a week

Luther sucks, but it's totally understandable tbh.

He spent his whole life trying (and failing) to live up to his position as "Number One" to an incredibly overbearing father, and slowly realizes it was all (so far) for nothing.

Allison sucks slightly less (honestly, yeah, in hindsight her not using her powers "because I'm mad" is really stupid), but for no discernible reason.

It's never really explained how/why she used her power to become rich, famous, and "America's Sweetheart", but also her power is public knowledge, and she loses her husband/kid in a custody battle over using it? I dunno, that seems like a pretty weird plothole.

ok so Allison is better in the finale, but like 90% of that is just Luther being horrible and her seeming better by comparison

Allison is probably the most two-faced character in the whole show. She's poorly written, treats Vanya like shit like the entire time, but then is always immediately like "Oh, we're sisters and I love you. I mean, you're a loser, and too much of a burden to have around, and I only care about you when it's personally convenient, but why won't you listen to me?" Like the others don't give a shit about Vanya either but at least they don't pretend to.

And then that ep. 8 reveal Vanya was pretty damn justified in getting pissed off. Maybe not murder-justified, but Allison saying "Hey, so one time our dad told me to mind-control you into thinking you're a loser, which sent your entire life on a downward spiral, but I totally didn't think it was important." Like Allison is almost as manipulative toward Vanya as their dad was, and it's literally only when her power to manipulate people is taken away that she suddenly gives a shit.

Current character ranking

Klaus/Ben (they really need to be ranked together imo because Ben is basically just a part of Klaus)
Hazel
Vanya
5
Doughnut Lady
Pogo
-big gap-
Diego
Allison/Luther/Cha-Cha in any order, depending on the episode

well it offhand suggests how she became famous as she's driving and has little flashbacks of like "I heard a rumor I'd be perfect for the part" and "I heard a rumor you love me" but yeah having abusive mind control power would realistically get her blacklisted in the industry, especially if everyone knows about it.

My issue isn't with her doing it. Totally made sense for her to just do what her dad said at that age

My issue is that over the next 30ish years it never once occurred to her that "maybe that's the reason Vanya is so fucked up." With full knowledge of what her power does and how manipulative their dad was and how miserable Vanya was she should've easily pieced it together like decades earlier. But even as grown adults, Allison was fully willing to support the idea that Vanya is a useless nobody, even though she knows that she's the one that created that idea in the first place
