I dont recognize her anymore.

Through choked back tears, a man shared these words today about his 74-year old mother. The last two years have seen their once-loving relationship deteriorate precipitously, now relegated to cold exchanges via text and strained small talk conversations at family gatheringssandwiched between explosive screaming matches which are often followed by extended periods of radio silence.

He shared screenshots of his mothers Facebook profile, littered with Alt-Right talking points, discriminatory memes, and effusive tributes to the Presidentalways juxtaposed with hateful diatribes regarding our former President. The racism and homophobia and Islamophobia she generates every day is both shocking and devastating to her adult son.

She just believes every word out of his mouth, everything she watches on FoxNews. he said. I cant reason with her. Its like talking to someone whos been brainwashed. She isnt the mother I knew.

This is how cults work. They gradually alter peoples brains, attuning them to a singular voice, and weaponizing them against any dissenting opinions. To their manipulated minds, efforts to reach them with objective truth become acts of aggression against the one they see as divineand trigger an ever-more passionate affection toward their leader. They will defend (even to relational death with people they once loved) that one person.

America is in a cultic crisis, and Trumpism is the cult. There is no other way to approach these days.

Bolded sounds like quite a few Trumper CEmen

You think that when Trump is kicked out of office, in either 2 years or 6 years, he'll make the people at the White House drink Kool-aid, and he will too?

My dad isn't as old, but I get it. He voted for Obama in 2012 but ended up voting for Trump in 2016, still supports him.
I was out of the state for a good chunk of 2015/2016 and must've missed his transition. He made fun of a high school friend of mine for watching Fox news, but now it's on every night at his house.

My brother and I rarely visit. Not just because of the whole Trump thing, but just the fact in general he's not really the same person who raised us.
We rarely talk, but tbf it's been a bit weird since his mom died last year as well.

My grandpa started watching fox news. We override him when he decides to start sounding stupid though and call him out for acting like a blatant racist shitbag, so he stops. He says he's mostly just tired of CNN griping about Trump. I'm not sure why he doesn't just not watch news.

If my mom was racist and had shitty opinions Id just not talk anytime she displayed them. Wait for that convo to blow over and be like "sooo, what we getting to eat again?". You only get one and if she isn't harming you personally than you might as well salvage what you can. Then again my mom has never said anything that would make me even raise my voice a little so I have no actual experience to speak off. Im a mommas boy so I can't imagine just completely losing her in my life.

That would only happen if he's being forcibly removed and everything is collapsing around him. If it is a typical end of term thing, then everything would go normally.

Have to disagree with you. "Politics" is what rights you believe should be extended to others, it's what you find to be morally right and wrong, what direction you want to see your town, state, country, and planet go in (and away from), it's who should benefit from finance laws, and the level of legitimacy we should extend to religious and scientific institutions - to mention just a few things.

These are deeply personal issues that get straight to the heart of "who you are" as a human being. A significant clash in political beliefs is very difficult to overcome in any relationship.

i have a friend that's a bit like this. i've known him for about 20 years and in the past 2 or 3 he's shown himself to be incredibly right wing. he supports people like trump, tommy Robinson and alex jones without question. we're still friends, but it's like he's a different person now, and it's not a good idea to talk politics around him anymore.

My mother is reaching this point. She won't even listen to anything I try to say that debunks whatever she hears on Faux, so I've given up trying.

Although it was kind of amusing to hear her say "Why don't you just go ahead and be a...liberal," like it was the dirtiest word she could think of.

I don't have to like those points, but I at least have the audacity to respect varying opinions, especially when they come from my own family members.

Politics is basically just what people bullshit about. Nobody really ever acts out on their political beliefs. A mom can sit there on Facebook and like/share shitty political opinions all day, and then when she logs off she's just the nicest sweetest lady who maybe works a full time job somewhere and will make you hot chocolate anytime you stop by.

This is a product of social media, not some isolated case of her randomly deciding to be a trump culty. This is a problem on Facebook and other platforms with older generations. Attention should be brought to how this is affecting family dynamics.

Don't ignore it just because it paints a negative picture of Trump.
