Welcome to the TOMPIC! In this, I will liveblog various things that I'm watching and reading and playing and doing, and sometimes people even are interested! There will be mostly unmarked SPOILERS for anything I'm doing! It shouldn't be too hard to avoid them, though, and I try to tag some of the biggest reveals anyway, as well as stuff that I've been spoiled on before the current point in the writeups.

The poll will officially run until TOMPIC 7 hits 500. The winner at that time will be my next selection from its category. Feel free to keep voting even if you come late- it'll still have some influence on future decisions, and on the poll when we get to TOMPIC 9!

I have more info, but I'll save it for the bumps. Here's TOMPIC 7 though!

I read the Three-Body Problem trilogy recently and recommend it. The first book is very good and the second is excellent, a real standout. Unfortunately I was let down by the third, which had a lot of elements I was unhappy with. Still a good series.

well that's good! Just hasn't had a great track record immediately recently. >_> Anyway!

So what is gonna be in this topic?
Most of the stuff I am playing or reading or watching or listening to! At the moment, arranged roughly by how much longer I have left on 'em:

World Wonder Ring Stardom: Love me some joshi! ...Although I imagine AEW is going to have some sorta Network before too long, so it'll be added to the eternal question of "do I REALLY wanna go with Stardom over NJPW and CHIKARA and WWE?" At any rate, we're archive crawling through 2016 and life is good, especially since they started adding subtitles and stuff! I don't think any of the regulars care, so I have been just posting star ratings for each match, but hey if voltch and nbiceman show up or something I'll start writing things up.
On deck: Could flip to one of those other feds at any moment, could be perpetually catching up until the heat death of the universe. We'll see!

Blind Video LP of Stardew Valley: Watch me slowly blunder through the farming life! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2y6062kaHZPSrgW_DpPJQNB74olNe2tc I'm not getting many views, but eh, it's fun to put together even if nobody's paying attention. .....Much like this topic series itself, sometimes!
On deck: Unless this takes off suddenly (which it won't, 47 episodes in with 2 views max) this is a one-off deal.

Les Miserables: Loved the recent movie, love what I've seen of other performances of the musical, loved the like 5% of this I got through last time before it had to go back to the library. Excited to actually finish it this time, probably around 2023! Just starting out.
On deck: Way too early to think about it! Maybe by then we'll have moved and I'll have found my copy of Romance of Three Kingdoms.

Pokemon Silver: Boy, there are lots of ways to waste time in this one! I spent a long time grinding for a Dratini from the Game Corner, and I just got done wandering around to various areas that I wasn't needing to visit yet. Time for Lake of Rage! I asked a few different people/groups to pick a Pokemon each for my final team, and we've gotten Dratini, Eevee, Krabby, and Quilava to build the first four. Clefable and Lanturn will be joining us eventually.
On deck: Might go with Fate/Extella, might grab a Zelda game, might resume Mario & Rabbids or Touhou Gensou Wanderer Reloaded, might be time for FE Three Houses by then, might go to one of my old games, who knows? But hey now that I have a Switch, I guess the "handheld" and "console" slots could hit the same library of games :O

Smash Ultimate: YEAH SMASH. I don't really have an end goal in mind here- I'd like to 100% it or at least finish WoL, but that might not be a reasonable goal. I'd also like to learn how to play competitively, or at least git gud enough not to get bodied every online match, but that also might not be a reasonable goal. Doesn't seem a very writeup-friendly game so I usually only talk about major things that happen (which reminds me: I got to Temple of Light wooo)
On deck: see Pokemon

Chip and Ironicus play MGSIV: Four games in and I still don't feel like I truly know what's going on, but it's a fun ride nonetheless. Probably once I finish IV, I'll go back to Tarvould's Quest playing DDLC, but we're early on so who knows.
On deck (after DDLC): If nL doesn't win the poll...maybe something by Vinesauce Vinny? I've been working my way up from his shorter videos and he seems like somebody I'd enjoy watching all the way through a game.

Being the Elite: I have seen the Young Bucks wrestle about five minutes in my life (lol, All In) and Omega not a whole lot more than that, but this series is already making me a fan. They just seem like good, chill dudes! And as I understand it we eventually get storylines and kayfabe and stuff instead of it just being "hey we're flying places and we don't sleep ever here are some flippydoos and memes." But we ain't there yet.
On deck: I almost started Miraculous instead, so if Wifebolo and I aren't watching it together by then, it's the heir apparent.

Aria the Animation: Gondolas, not shooty girls, although I do kinda wanna watch the other one at some point, too. Just a nice, feel-good, cute-girls-doing-cute-things show that isn't aggressively moe like...70% of today's anime. >_> It helps that I was reading the manga before moe became the big thing! Still on the first season, and I suspect we'll watch the whole thing before moving on.
On deck: Haven't thought that far ahead. If I had to pick something today....Wandering Son?

Stormlight Archives: Have been loving this in audiobook format. Just finished Words of Radiance and am now starting some sorta cosmere-spanning short story compendium unless Maniac and NFUN convince me that it's a PARTICUARLY bad idea. But, Edgedancer. We'll almost certainly finish up what's out of Stormlight.
On deck: TBD, since it's part of the poll!

8-bit Theater: I don't feel like this has aged super great, but it's still got some likable characters and good gags. I...think we're about done gathering orbs? The plot kinda gets lost sometimes. >_>
On deck: TBD, since it's part of the poll! (Although before that, I'll cruise through Order of the Stick, Girl Genius, and Paranatural to catch up on what I've missed.)

Persona 5: I THINK I am almost done, but my "just kidding one more dungeon" senses are tingling. It's been a great ride! Went with Futaba, BTW.
On deck: SSBU has already kinda jumped the queue, it'll just be "officially" in the rotation once P5's done >_>

Computer game Slots 1 & 2: I finished both of my games in rapid succession! I am currently running one of my famous STEAM BATTLES to fill one of those slots- I put some games I have into a bracket, and play them for a half hour at a time to decide the winner of the "matches." By the time this topic goes live, there's a good chance it'll be done- we're down to semifinals now of Trails in the Sky SC v. Recettear and Touhou v. Aviary Attorney.
On deck: If one of them doesn't win the poll, I'll start another STEAM BATTLE immediately after finishing this one!

DO NOT READ ANY MISTBORN SHORT STORIES!

Secret History will literally spoil the entire trilogy. I think there is a Wax and Wayne one with spoilers as well.

Otherwise you should be good with all the other one off cosmere shorts, and Emperor's Soul or whatever that was called.

Also I remember watching a long d&d series with Ironicus as a player. Semi recommended it to me way back and it was great

hm, I don't think I have a way of avoiding specific stories on an audiobook, or knowing what goes with what. We're starting off with something about Forging and Soul Stamps, which sounds like it could be Emperor's Soul.

Should....should I ditch the audiobook and try to buy a copy somewhere and read it in like a year after Les Mis? <_<

I have never done a short story audio book so I have no idea if you can skip certain stories like with a chapter skip or something.

And yeah that is Emperors soul. Its good.

Is Secret History on the list of stories? Cause you definitely shouldn't read that if you have any interest in reading the trilogy.

I guess otherwise just listen until you get to Secret History and then stop.

Looking at it.

2. Hope of Elantris is a sequel to Elantris so it spoils that. But Elantirs book is also not super good anyway so you'd probably never read it lol. Just expect to be confused maybe.

3. Eleventh Metal is a prequel to Mistborn but was written for the Adventure game and assumes you may not have read the books so it should be fairly safe

4. Allomancer Jak is set between series and I doubt has any real spoilers (it's an unreliable narrator anyway). Edit: see next post

5. Is secret history.

Been years since I read them so it's hard to remember. Might skim through them again quickly for spoilers.

The rest will be fine.

Doing a quick search you are probably better off skipping Jak until you finish the first trilogy since you plan on listening to that eventually.

Assuming the audio book didnt cut them there should be spoiler warnings from Sanderson before the stories telling you if you should avoid it.

Emperor's Soul: fffffffpersonaaaa

Ys I Departed Ancient Ys Omens Chronicles Complete 2009 & II with Knuckles: Oh lol I didn't realize this was Falcom as well. B8 hype machine, don't let me down! This is the most JRPG lookin' JRPG what ever did JRPG. I approve. I am not sure I quite grasp the Bump System, and getting immediately murdered by the first enemy I found did not exactly boost my confidence! Not entirely sure yet what I should be doing- I need a full set of equipment for the fortuneteller, but that seems like it's gonna take a looooot of grinding. Still, this seems like it'll be fun once I get the hang of it, despite my general apathy towards action-RPG. Do wish I could play windowed, though. Z and X being the reverse of usual is also gonna throw me. Booted it back up after work and got as far as the shrine, where the ghoul boss thing has me completely stumped.

Emperor's Soul: Beated, good times! Kinda surprised she never used the normal-person-who-doesn't-know-she's-a-forgery seal but it worked out nicely and we DID get to see the martial artist one.

Sixth of the Dusk: I skipped more stories than I meant to, but I don't think it's super worth it to spend an extended period fishing through the CDs to go back when there's a decent chance I'll listen to this whole thing again anyway. >_> Sixth of Dusk is a dang mood, and I am excited to learn more about Aviar. You only really missed two. One is volume 1 of what ended up being a comic book and the other is kind of a ghost story.

He second is cool but I'd say it's not worth hunting back for them. You can check them out down the line after mistborn if you really care

Sixth of Dusk: Beated. I kinda liked how it didn't go the solid-but-cliched route of noble nature vs evil development! Tied up nicely at the end too. For some reason I'm always kinda hooked by jungles that are actively hostile like that one.

Ys: Lv. 5 Adol with upgraded armor laughs at that phantom dude! ...Kinda lame fight though if that's how you're supposed to do it. At least grinding is painless! I snagged a girl from the floor below, and got a mask of eyes which is probably super helpful if I have the patience to try it in a bunch of places. I don't think I do. Escorting Reena out of the dungeon was kinda a pain! Her pathfinding is...not great, and she's slow and dies quite easily. But we got her out eventually. Game sure has a lot of waifus! And husbandos too, actually. Looked it up and this was originally an NES game! The earliest copyright date I saw was 2001 but it was giving me a real NES-y vibe so that explains a lot, lol. Neither a point for or against it, it's just kinda interesting to go back to that style of very minimal storytelling and information.

Edgedancer: Poor Wendell. I hope the other Voidbringers stop making fun of him for being vegetarian :(

LP MGS4 3-1: Oh, Johnny's here. And we...get his poop barrel. Lovely. We get to see the little robot in action some though!...Meryl! :O

STEAM BATTLE #3 Touhou- Tried Reimu out, and got all the way to the backup dancer duo, so that's fun. Some of these spellcards are rough for me even on easy, but maybe once I've played more it'll get easier to follow.

THE VERDICT: ....hm. It was a tossup going into the match, and it still is. Solid characters, both sides. Solid music, both sides. Graphics: edge AA. Gameplay: ....hm. I like both. Convenience factor: edge AA- can't touhou during lunch breaks! Listing it out like that, it looks like Aviary Attorney bumps off one beloved series. Can it repeat the performance in the finals?

Vlado posted...
To actually achieve something, you need resolution, not doubt. You cannot have doubts about such important aspects of your life, otherwise you will not get anything done. The fundamentals need to be fixed before you can build from there.

oh

STEAM BATTLE #1 Trails SC: The finals are here, and Trails is invincible...or is it? Finished out the sewer- even got mimics in the tutorial dungeon, eh? Lotsa goodies, though, so can't really complain. I particularly appreciate being able to lump Eagle Eye and Info into a single slot. Looks like it's almost time for....something!

Ys: Note to self: new, strong enemies showing up probably makes it a bad time to use a teleport statue you just found. Fair enough. Shrine B3 seems a bit beyond me, so I backtracked two towns and got a full set of second level equipment. ...Thinking back, I am not sure I remembered to equip it. >_> I also decided to try the mines again on my way back. The first enemies were still tricky, but manageable- I bet a skilled player could accomplish things in this dungeon at this point, but since it's me we'll have to try again later. It's kinda interesting that health regens outside, but not in dungeons!

Edgedancer: Her Pancakefulness is ON THE CASE. This is still great, even if there's not tons of commentary to be made. Lift gonna Lift.

STEAM BATTLE #10- Aviary Attorney: Cleared the second case....with a bad end, I guess, because all I did was implicate a different innocent. That sucks! I looked at an FAQ and it looks like it was possible to set things right this time, just not last time.

THE VERDICT: I have been stewing on this for a few hours and still haven't reached a conclusion. Let's go point by point again!

Story: Slight edge to Trails. A lot simpler, but wanting to fix things has me by the nuts, and on the flip side having two downer endings in two cases has kinda deflated me.

Characters: Slight edge to Trails. Take nothing away from AA's cast, but it doesn't have a party consisting entirely of Estelle and Anelace.

Gameplay: Wash. AA's gameplay is a lot fresher but I'm a dang sucker for a good JRPG.

Art/ambience: Wash. Objectively AA probably has this, but subjectively, I'm a huge weeb.

Music: Wash. AA is really refreshing, but Trails seems to have stepped up an already solid game.

Convenience: ...Wash? I didn't get around to testing if SC has the same scroll wheel and focus switching issues as FC, but AA has set save points and that is difficult when you do a lot of your gaming on lunch breaks.

.....pretty even still, but looking at that list, I gotta say....welcome back to Falcom Stats and Discussion.

Yeah, I almost expected at least 2 more seasons, but it will be one to go at this point.

But, that does mean it will hit 200+ episodes, and the season is slated for 26 episodes, so the final tally will be at 221 episodes.

Episode 200 is then Season 9 Episode 05.
