How you gonna get tougher if you don't take a few punches?
How you gonna get smarter if you don't cast a few spells?

Its better to hit yourself, but yeah its a failure of a system in practice.

I just want the traditional "Fight enemies and your character levels up"

Could you fight a weak enemy and keep hitting and healing yourself?

Theyd negate each other I think, but Im not sure. I havent touched the game in a decade.

No, I definitely feel you. Needing to take damage is dumb. That almost encourages have a bad armor, or something ( I would assume having armor negates damage...)

I see. Sounds like you would have to maybe finish the battle with less health or something. Now, what about healing when youre at full health, or al most full. Do you still get the fill experience points? Or less because you healed for less? This is for you or anyone who knows.

Yeah. I t could have been good if it worked a little differently. Though, Im not sure how...

The system sucks, and FFII also has the worst dungeon design in the series. Those two things just sink the whole game for me, and it's easily my least favorite FF game.

Don't some of the SaGa games have a similar system?

Imagine being a goblin in that game and you stumble upon a group of folk. You get ready for battle and the first thing they do is stab themselves with their swords and bonk their heads with their hammers.

I imagine it was quite the sight

This is the real problem for me. The dungeons are just awful. Between the boring encounters, constantly reused sprites, constant "trap rooms" and just poor overall layout of the dungeons... It's not great.

The leveling system I'm fine with. A few tweaks would make it better - I'd have had traditional levels as well that had fixed HP and MP growths, and then tweaked (i.e. greatly sped up) the growth rate of spells and equipment. As it is, you can only max out a couple pieces of equipment and a handful of spells by the end of the game. This system should have allowed you to easily become a full master of arms if you wanted to.

It's smart in theory, it was just implemented kind of poorly.

It was theoretically improved on, though. If I remember correctly, the GBA Dawn of Souls rerelease had a number of tweaks to leveling, while the PS1 version was more faithful to the original (and thus had the same things people complained about first time around). It was mostly minor changes, but it was part of why a lot of people preferred the GBA version to the PS1 one.

When I first played it back in '98 or so, I tried to make everyone a well rounded character, and that was a huge mistake. When I played it again like 10 years later, I knew how the system worked from the last time and picked a few core abilities to focus on for each of my dudes, and everything was fine and I quite enjoyed it.

I am gonna assume you are a sheep online who thinks if someone said a game sucks online = facts.

I am the opposite. Except FF5 (FF5 has good music and is kind of cool), but all FF games are childish and unrealistic and boring. FF2 is the only good of old ones til FF7 came and upwards which it became good. It engages you to find a purpose in a world of war and misery. So yeah, its overall enjoyable game. Great game, best one of the old. Leveling up is fun in this game, in the other it is childish and cant be taken seriously.

Protip: If you are playing any version of the game other than the NES original (and possibly the PS1 Origins version), your HP will go up automatically every few fights without you having to abuse yourself, though you still need to take damage to increase your Stamina, which will then increase the size of those HP boosts.

FF2 is not bad though. I think people who hate them are just mad that its not hugely manchildish like super hero nonsense. Its a reason why American manchildren likes FF6 so much, the main villain is literally a clown

Nah, the story and characters of FF2 were its strong point. Easily the best of the first 3 games. I just hate the gameplay.

The characters might as well have just been the generic classes from ff1 for how much personality they actually had.

Halfway through the game, all I could tell you about any of them is that Leon and Maria are siblings, and Guy apparently speaks beaver
