34. Port Royal in Kingdom Hearts 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6CfKcMhjY" data-time="

What a long strange trip it's been for the Pirates franchise. The first film was a surprise success and ever since then it's been profitable but with diminishing returns. I really liked the first one when it came out, was confused by 2 & 3, skipped 4, and hated the last one. I saw it at the drive-in and didn't pay much attention though. That being said, I'm pretty sure no one actually still likes these films. We'll see if people start revisiting this series after KH3 Hint: It should, cause the Caribbean is going to be HIGH on this list.

But yeah this world. It's the first KH2 world, not counting Mysterious Tower and Hundred Acre Wood. It sticks a bit TOO closely to the source material. I mean, there's like a five minute cutscene in here that is a shot by shot recreation of a scene in the film. You would think it would be an exciting/interesting scene, but it's actually a really boring out of place one where Barbossa's all "ye best be belifin in ghost stories Miss Thuhnuhrrrrr, cause yr in one." I can't get it out of my head. I hate it.

The world is very dark. This is for two reasons, I think. One, the weird "realistic" character models probably look better in dark environments (there's less to render in terms of shadows I guess) and two, so the developers can force the zombie mechanic on you. By that I mean that the enemies in this level are invincible unless they're standing in the moonlight, in which they are revealed as skeletons. It's super annoying because when you hit one of them you inevitably get locked in a combo that pushes them out of the moonlight, and then you have to wait to them to inch back into the light.

On the bright side: Luxord!

KH3 spoilers: More on this later: I wasn't super excited when the Caribbean was announced for KH3, but it more than redeemed this world.

This is for sure correct and a good point. Again - it's a cool idea; just not sure it was done as good as it could have been.

33. Wonderland in Kingdom Hearts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI34cpo1qtc" data-time="

This song hits me right in the nostalgia feels man. I love it. It's one of those tunes that I find myself randomly thinking about once in a while. Like, it's just REALLY GOOD.

I guess Traverse Town is technically the "first level" of KH, but to me this is really where the game begins. You've just traveled through an (underwhelming) gummi ship level. You're floating down a hold. Goofy comically crashes on top of Donald. There's a sleeping doorknob. You've shrunk so you can walk through a tiny door. They've actually done it. They've made a weird Disney Fantasy game. It hits you and you realize it's actually good.

But not as good as it will be. In retrospect this level sort of embodies people's complaints about the first KH about how "you never know what's going on." I've never really agreed with this complaint, but then again, I come from the school of "talk to every NPC" and "explore 100% of the map" and "press x to search even in games where that's not an option."

It just takes a bit of experimentation and Wonderland allows you to do just that: experiment. What happens if I shoot that flower with Thunder? Can I jump and hit that thing? The problem is this level is a bit too esoteric for its own good. It's also the "first level" so obviously the combat/monster variety isn't going to be as good here as it is in other stages.

Next: this level would have been better off going straight to DVD.

Yeah I love wonderland but it's a strange first world to jump into because its quite difficult to navigate.

But it's also an example of what I did love about KH1. I found new things to interact with like every time I played the game.

32. Agrabah in Kingdom Hearts 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhj25HnpSRU" data-time="

When I was a kid I actually liked Return of Jafar a lot. It wasn't my "favorite" movie but it might have been up there. At the time, it was pretty exciting for a Disney film to have a direct sequel, even one that was straight to video. It just wasn't done! Now, everything gets a sequel but back then it was rare. I haven't seen it in probably 20 years, but I just watched this clip as I was looking for scenes from the movie for this writeup. As an adult the animation is notably worse and the absence of Robin Williams is pronounced, but as a kid I didn't care. I was just along for the ride.

"Along for the ride" might be one way to describe Agrabah in KH2. It's not particularly bad or boring, but it is a bit mediocre. Agrabah itself is technically bigger in KH2 than in the first game, but it feels smaller. Cave of Wonders is also back and it's undeniably worse - it's basically been turned into a string of battles. Not to say that the first Agrabah was perfect, but I think it was certainly better than this.

Giant Jafar battle, yadda yadda yadda. Nothing more to add. Feels like a filler world.

31. The Grid in Dream Drop Distance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajQhSNW0p2A" data-time="

Remember when Olivia Wilde was a thing? I mean, she still exists, but to me she's a pure artifact of the "aughts" - which is what some people call the first decade of the 2000's. Her whole career was built off of being really hot in the OC. A quick imdb search shows that she's still in movies and engaged to Jason Sudeikis - who I've really never found funny in anything. He's literally off brand Ed Helms. They're perfect for one another. But I digress.

Her biggest role by far is Quorra in the (failed) Tron reboot with Jeff Bridges and Not Channing Tatum. Someone got fired over this film right? Whose idea was it to reboot Tron into one of the Matrix sequels? It sucks big time. I'm not a Tron fan though. If I was a Tron fan I'd probably hate it even more.

Anyway, I guess Disney was interested in Square giving this film some advertising or something, even though it had already came and went by the time 3D came out, because here it is. Like Port Royal, the realistic character models are a bit jarring. You drop back and forth between Sora and Riku here, exploring largely the same areas this time. In Sora's version, you are teased with having to rescue Tron, who's been transformed into Darth Rinzler. In Riku's version, something else happens - I forget.

The music here is good and the stage's reality shift is interesting, allowing you to cause enemies to self-destruct or change sides. All in all, it's not bad but the taint of Tron Legacy is inescapable.

30. Pride Lands in Kingdom Hearts 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ca56qq281Q" data-time="

It's all worth it for Cub Sora singing/monotonally saying "Hakuna Matata" in the cutscene above at roughly the 45 second mark.

Pride Lands is the Atlantica of Kingdom Hearts 2 even though Kingdom Hearts 2 technically has an Atlantica (which was an honorable mention on this list, check the first page). We got new character models! Goofy is a turtle again! Sora has new moves! Now he can run really really fast but can't jump to save his life. Simba joins your party and holy crap he's strong.

Now, I understand why they made Sora into a literal kitten from a gameplay perspective, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't particularly like his furry redesign. He's like this weird muddy purple/brown/gray mixture that just isn't all that appealing. In fact the world itself is not particularly attractive. I get that it takes place during "Scar's reign" and so it's kind of the dystopian wasteland of New Caprica (that's a Battlestar Galactica reference), but still that doesn't excuse the drabness of it all.

I won't deny that galloping across these vast wastelands is enjoyable. I also like the boss, even if the fighting itself isn't that great. The regular battle system in KH2 is so good anything that detracts from it is a no go. Like you're going to give me Drive forms and then put me in a level where I can't use them. Yeah that's a great idea.

29. Olympus in Kingdom Hearts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuVHwmEGMR4" data-time="

Things that happen in the first game's Olympus Coliseum:

1) thirteen year old you gets a weird boner for cloud
2) you hit barrels
3) you fight in three easy tournaments
4) you fight in one not as easy tournament
5) you are unfairly exposed to the hardest boss in the game (cerberus)
6) sephiroth shows up
7) you lose to sephiroth
8) you walk around in precisely three rectangular areas

Let's tackle these one at a time.

Cloud's KH design is good. I know it's like the dictionary picture for hot topic edge, but I can't deny that he looks cool. The fight itself is challenging and fun, requiring you to actually be somewhat good at the combat and not just spam x (which kind of becomes the rule of law in this series after KH1). He does yell an awful lot though.

There are few things I hate more about Olympus than training missions. How, pray tell, does hitting barrels turn us into heroes? I'm pretty sure Phil is just messing with Sora the whole time. It's just such an obvious "video game thing." And by that I mean something thrown in by the developers to waste time in order to show story progression.

The tournaments are ok, but really they're just enemy mobs that are really easy, even without Donald and Goofy. They really just work to set the stage for the Final Fantasy fights. All of them are pretty good and are highlights of the series tbh. The Hades and Hercules fights, on the other hand, are such anti-climactic buzzkills. Like you feel like the punchline of some cosmic joke where you save the world multiple times only so people can call you "Junior Heroes" compared to a guy who loses to a barrel and runs in circles.

The first time through this game I lost to Cerberus A LOT. I still think he's pretty difficult based on where you are in the game. You don't even have cure yet! It sucks because the heads are always wigglin around and you're always whiffing. Maybe I just suck (or maybe it's because I play Wizard with low experience at the beginning).

Nothing to say about the Sephiroth fight except it rules. Once you figure out his patterns (and get once more) he's not actually that hard. One Winged Angel sounds better here than in FF7.

All of this good stuff is kind of mitigated by the fact that there's not much of a level here. You got three screens! Three! With nothing to do except participate in tournaments. So as much as I'm into it, I'm not putting it super high on the list.

28. Space Paranoids in Kingdom Hearts 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIiP32m8tlY" data-time="

I've never seen the original Tron, but I could listen to Bruce Boxleitner read anything. A voice smooth as sandpaper that one.

In a game full of WTF moments, one of the biggest ones is that the Tron world ends up being inside Radiant Garden. Yeah, you're exploring Ansem the Wise's computer. Weird, right? Props to them coming up with a semi-logical backstory for including the world and not just making it another floating circle in gummi space. So all the stuff you do in Tronland (aka Space Paranoids) has semi relevancy to the overall mythos, including coming up with passwords that are the names of the seven princesses. Or Sora Donald Goofy, which has been my password to my myspace ever since this game came out.

I forgot to mention the lightcycle stuff in my writeup for "the Grid" earlier. It was improved in that game versus what we get here, but it's not bad what we have here. Another activity that this level has is something like "hacking," where you hit enemies that drop yellow orbs and then the yellow orbs allow you to do some sort of extra interaction with the level.

I'm not so sure the Tron color scheme translates as well into KH2 as it should. Again, the colors feel too dark and muted. Ultimately, I think I personally just dislike the Tron aesthetic.

My favorite thing about this world is that it starts the running gag of Sora being clueless with technology/computers, even really basic words like "program." Sora is real dumb y'all.

I think I knew that. I think I was using "reboot" in the business sense, as in "reboot the franchise by reintroducing it to the audience with a new installment."

Regardless, I didn't really know what was going on. I will firmly admit I also was probably not paying close attention.

27. Country of the Musketeers in Dream Drop Distance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7sEdwmfUeY" data-time="

The country of the Musketeers is ostensibly France, which is a pretty good country. When I was young it was en vogue to mock the French as effete or cowardly. I'd like to take a moment to personally apologize for my rude behavior as a child.

In this Sorariku 3D World, the player takes in a night at the opera and "teams up" once again with Donald and Goofy. It's a portable game so obviously you don't get to actually team up, but they're there at least. So is Mickey. Maybe due to the fact that it had been a while between KH2 and 3D, but the moment when Sora meets Donald and Goofy is pretty good. The developers make an effort to show the connection and brotherhood between all of these characters.

A couple strange things about this world. First, there's a weird moment where a box, moments before crushing poor Queen Minnie to death, disappears in mid air, and Sora immediately knows it's due to Riku's influence in his sleeping world. This happens often in 3D and is meant to show the bond Sora and Riku have with one another. It make sense, it's just kind of funny the way it's presented. Sora's version also has an interesting fight on the back of a carriage fighting a dinosaur, Jurassic Park style. In Riku's level you have to defuse some poison weapons in the basement of the opera house. It's really easy because Flowmotion is super OP in 3D.

The reality shift for this level -- which involves comics floating down from the screen - is not so good, especially on PS4. Without the touch screen, it's totally pointless. Some might say this level is totally pointless, but I won't go that far. I know nothing about the actual film this world is based upon, but I thought it was nice to see Donald, Goofy, and Mickey again.

26. Agrabah in Kingdom Hearts the First

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wprTMcxhYw" data-time="

Agrabah's a tough world, because I think it does a number of things really well while at the same time falling prey to a bunch of unfortunate design decisions.

In Agrabah you are both in the city proper and exploring the Cave of Wonders. In retrospect, both areas are surprisingly small. The city has the benefit of being somewhat of a maze, with awnings and switches and window frames you can platform off of. The first time I played this game, before I realized we would eventually get a high jump and glide, I remember trying SO HARD to get to some of these chests. And now I never bother in a KH game because I know I'm going to spend an hour before the final dungeon getting these things.

The cave is probably better here than it is in KH2, but not really by much to be honest. The underground part where you're swimming and having Apu touch rocks is not all that fun, especially with the whole Trinity dilemma. Do you keep Donald and Goofy in your party to get Trinities? Or do you try out the new guest characters?

Storywise you've got a fairly good re-enactment of the first Aladdin, though in retrospect it would have been more interesting if it had given us a bit more. Let's see Aladdin become a prince. Let's get a reference to a "whole new world." Let's have a better boss that doesn't involve us chasing after Iago as he flies back and forth in a slow, predictable pattern.

I like the flying carpet escape, the unique themed enemies and Kurt Zisa - who was a nice surprise my first playthrough. This world is probably too low, but OH WELL TOO LATE.

25. La Cite de Cloches in Dream Drop Distance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzkhym4lMLU" data-time="

Yeah, Agrabah is probably better than this; then again, listen to that battle music...

Hunchback of Notre Dame is a serious film. I think when I saw it as a kid I was really looking forward to the talking gargoyles and a story where Quasimodo turns into a regular person at the end and well, let's just say I was disappointed. It's good though. The actual characters from the film (aside from Frollo) feel inconsequential to this level though honestly. The gargoyles are barely here. Could have done more with Quasi and Esmeralda.

Good things about this level besides the music include: reality shifting, running away from dragons, Sora getting owned by something called a "Wargoyle," fighting tiny frog knights in a cathedral, and flowmotioning all over the french rooftops. Something not so good: it's too empty. This is a recurring issue with 3D though.

24. Neverland in Birth by Sleep

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSmC78sx8eU" data-time="

In my opinion, Neverland is the best overall "original" level in Birth by Sleep. Even though all three characters visit the same areas, their narratives feel different enough that they feel like unique experiences. When BBS is really working, what's happening are really variations on a theme, or one event seen from three separate perspectives. When all three are placed together in the timeline, it reveals a lot about the bond between the protagonists.

Mostly though, I think this level is just pure fun. It doesn't hurt that by the time you get to Neverland you've unlocked some cool attacks in the command deck. The way the level is set up (large flat areas full of enemies) makes it extremely easy/fun to grind levels, abilities, and form changes. It's the perfect place to just run around and mindlessly wail on dudes. Since BBS doesn't have a real "final level," it's this by default I guess.

23. Land of Dragons in Kingdom Hearts 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyS713JjagY" data-time="

This is a weird one and it's probably too high. I don't like Mulan for personal reasons. I'm half Chinese and white kids used to always make fun of me by doing the whole offensive Asian accent and calling me chinese cuisine, so Mulan just seemed like more ammunition. The thing about representation in media is that I feel like it is very rarely "for" the people it's depicting. It's like if I admitted liking Mulan I would just be stereotyping myself. I wonder if other minorities feel like this.

And now I hate it even more, because when I was looking for clips for this post all I see are posts about the cartoon sauce. The internet is truly a terrible place.

Anyway, for some reason, I find the layout of this level enjoyable - probably because I like grinding drive forms and this level is good for that. This level has a couple unique heartless that are fun to fight, like the big ol spear boys and the evil magistrate boys.

This level gives us one of KH2's claims to fame, which was Sora fighting the "bird(?) heartless?" I don't know what they are. You know what I mean. He's on the mountain, Shan Yu summons a bunch of heartless, you fight them for a minute and a half. It's really not that great, but I guess it was a technical achievement at the time.

Other than the bird boss the other bosses here are decent. Overall, decent is a good summary of the level as a whole.

Not going to be able to continue the list today due to being short on time, so you know what that means... bonus list!

Top 10 Disney/Pixar Worlds not Featured in Kingdom Hearts (as a level)

10. Emperor's New Groove - It's a bit overrated, but people like it so let's put it in.

9. Coco - Could nicely replace Halloween Town

8.The Jungle Book - Could be too similar to Pride Lands or Deep Jungle, but if they based it off the "Live Action" remake then... maybe?

7. The Sword in the Stone - shocked this hasn't happened yet, honestly

6. The Black Cauldron - With the new one coming out, it might actually happen?

5. A Goofy Movie - If we're gonna give Donald a level (foreshadowing) then why not Goofy too?

4. A Muppets World - Or at least a mini-game world, ala 100 Acre Wood?

3. Wall E - Pay someone else to be creative about how this would work.

2. The Incredibles - If you're not going to do Marvel, then why not this?

1. A "DuckTales" World - Don't be mad. This would probably require some retconning to make it actually fit in the KH world, but I like the new show.
