I have legitimately no idea what "American Values" means in this context.

That said if anything actually comes out of this and it's not just empty statements, this could actually be a good thing maybe depending on how it's used.

If you want to deal with global warming you have to address economics at the same time because that is the major stumbling block. The correlation between GDP and carbon output is shockingly high, and unless you can convince people that your plan will reduce carbon output without cratering the economy, people won't vote for it.

There is one major country that has ever succeeded in cutting carbon emissions.........the Soviet Union. How did they do it? Their economy collapsed.

The current republican plan to deal with Global Warming is "we'll all be dead before it gets much worse". Sure you have to be 35 to run for President but I think they should make a mandatory cut-off age where you can't run over, say, 70, just to make sure they'll care at least a little bit about the future. If you're too enfeebled to be allowed to drive a car, you shouldn't be able to drive the nation.

The "Republican" plan is that climate change will happen slowly enough that we will adapt as needed. Which I think is perfectly legitimate.

Well the main mechanism through which Noah's plan works to reduce carbon emissions is to pump a ton of money into R&D. To the extent that that component works it's an increase in efficiency (in carbon-adjusted terms) and certainly won't "crater the economy."

That's right, and that's why we need to deal with these things together. Republicans will accept a plan to reduce carbon emissions based on better technology - see Seph's post immediately above yours as proof.

That goes for all politicians, not just Republicans. When your donors dont WANT new technology, because theyre in the coal industry, or the oil industry, or what have you, youre not going to see incentives to develop it

Actually one of the really interesting things that's pointed out in the other thread within the one I linked is that we're actually making a ton of progress on reducing emissions in the energy sector (coal, for example, is currently dying from market pressure)! Apparently the sectors for which we have very few solutions are agriculture and manufacturing.

It's up to Democrats to propose a plan on this issue. You can't expect leadership from Republicans on this one. Democrats haven't really proposed anything substantive (i.e. something that 1) Republicans could actually vote for and 2) would make a real difference) on the issue for over 20 years, since the Kyoto agreement was rejected. I can't remember the last time Democrats put forward a bill on this issue, and not a nonsense bill like the Senate making a finding that climate change exists but not doing anything about it.

As for the donors......2016 proved that donors just aren't that important anymore. Thanks Jeb.
