As expected, Chapter 5 will be in Fine Park. We're about to set off when Meiko and Emilia show up. They're going to be covering the Pokmon Carnival, and their boss, TV producer Roger Clifford, is with them today. Apparently the girls have mentioned Tim and his detective skills to him. Talking to everyone in the shop reveals little, but Roger seems to be admired; he's even impressed the CEO of GNN. When we mention we're heading to Fine Park, Emilia and Meiko mention they covered the accident that closed it down. Tim asks if he can see the video, and they ask Roger, who says it's no problem, but they're a bit busy today, so it'll have to wait for tomorrow. We head to the park. It's raining out, and the park looks abandoned, but we soon meet an Alakazam. Pikachu asks him if he knows anything, and he says he'll call Pokmon who can help. He sends out a message psychically, and a Stufful, a Loudred, and a Trubbish come out of hiding. Alakazam still doesn't fully trust humans after the accident. Apparently a lot of the Pokmon that had been living there were taken away after the accident. He was at a different park, so he didn't see it, and when he got back, Charizard was already unconscious. Stufful runs away when we approach, so we talk to Loudred instead. He says Charizard was the one who went wild, but it still looked like it was having fun. Charizard was taken away afterward, so they can't talk to it. A Murkrow is of no help, as it didn't live around here and thought of amusement parks as too noisy to begin with--it was a bit noisier, but nothing out of the ordinary. Trubbish couldn't help, either--it moved in after the place was abandoned due to all of the trash. There's fresh Pokmon food out, though, which makes us wonder if someone's trying to help them out. I'm at a loss, though, since Stufful's still too afraid to talk to us and we seem to have examined everything else. Oh, no, wait, there's another section to this area. Smeargle looks so depressed that it's not even acknowledging us. That's enough to trigger a story advancement, though, and we surmise Charizard was affected by R. We can ask the Pokmon about the park and Charizard now. Alakazam says Charizard was normally full of energy, but it seemed limp and listless after the incident. Loudred says Charizard was excited to be the main Pokmon in the parade, and mentions being on announcement duty during the parade--though what Loudred really wants is to be on cannon duty at the Ferris Wheel some day, like another Loudred it looks up to. Trubbish's second-hand information says Charizard was really caring, too. Murkrow got into a fight with Charizard the day before the accident, because it tried to take some of the guests' shiny things and Charizard got mad at it. And we finally find out why Smeargle is so depressed--the busted-up painting was its work. We're tasked with fixing the mural, and Smeargle says it's a picture of everyone who was there before the accident. Charizard, Litten, 2 Skiploom and a Hoppip. Charizard was, of course, looked up to by everyone. Litten was a bit of a troublemaker, but friends with Charizard, and it still lives here, waiting for Charizard's return. The Hoppip and Skiploom left, though. Now we have to search for Litten. We find it in the burned-out donut shop. It confirms that, like the others, it had no memory of its rampage. Stufful finally trusts us enough to talk to us. She was in the parade, and she mentions Charizard's eyes turning red, just like Glalie's did, as well as there being a bunch of flashes of light. That's the third piece of testimony we need to prove it was R, along with the forgetting and the exhaustion. Alakazam reached the conclusion that Charizard was under the influence of an outside force, too, and says that "the other visitor" was probably here to investigate the same thing. Meaning, of course, Harry. Alakazam even refers to him as a man with a Pikachu.

Alakazam then outright confirms it, saying Pikachu is the same Pikachu that came around a while back, and that he and Harry seemed pretty agitated. We ask all the other Pokmon, and they don't seem to know anything. Smeargle also had the full set of questions available, and mentioned that the mural was actually wrecked not by the rampaging Charizard himself, but by the other Pokmon stampeding out of fear from it. Oh, wait, I missed Trubbish! Trubbish remembers seeing Pikachu with Harry, and points us in the direction of Buneary, at the Ferris wheel in the back. The rain intensifies, and lightning strikes. The Ferris wheel seems gashed up, too, which doesn't fit with the reports of Charizard rampaging in the main square. Heliolisk is panicking, because that lightning strike trapped Buneary up near the top of the Ferris wheel. Apparently, ever since the incident, Buneary has gotten sad, so it goes up on the Ferris wheel to look out at the city, which Heliolisk runs for it using its electricity. Oh, it powers the machine that runs it, but the lightning likely shorted it out. Looking at the control room, a bunch of Joltik go scurrying off, and the wires are cut. We confirm that the Joltik are chewing on pieces of the wires. We talk to one and get a piece of the wire and a hint to the next one's location, and then we meet the cannon Loudred. Its voice fires the cannon. Checking the cannon reveals a Joltik inside, so Loudred fires it out. It points us down to the approach, where another got itself tangled up in the wire. It says the next one was avoiding the rain, so I head towards the helmet on the bench, but on the way, I get a Pika-prompt--and run into the next Joltik! It attached itself to Pikachu. We fix the Ferris wheel...for a few seconds. It's fried. Then Tim steals Pikachu's line, and we cut to Pikachu putting on the helmet in order to be fired out of the cannon up to Buneary. Oh, he's got a rope tied around him, so he can get himself and Buneary back down. They zipline down. And they find a locket, and Tim confirms that the woman in the picture is his mother, so Pikachu correctly surmises that the child is Tim. Tim's mother is also holding a baby in the photo; does Tim have a younger sibling we don't know about? And why did Buneary have the locket? Because Harry gave it to her. Harry and Pikachu asked Buneary about the accident and then were attacked by another person with a Skorupi. Pikachu fought off the Skorupi while Harry helped Buneary escape. He gave her the locket to give back to one of them when she saw them next, and this was the first she saw either of them. Pikachu suggests we head back for the day. As we leave, Mewtwo is looking on, and his internal monologue states, "Hmm. It seems Pikachu has indeed lost his memory. Nonetheless, he is continuing to keep his promise to me." Holiday is at the Baker Detective Agency when we return. We share what we've learned. Holiday says that the incidents have all been classified as accidents thus far because there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the Pokmon afterwards, and so we think that R leaves no trace. Oh, GNN is Chapter 6? That was short; only two posts long. The security guard who was at PCL in Chapter 3 is at GNN now. A Mimikyu has run off, and then we meet a guy with an Ekans. Ekans doesn't like how strong the AC is cranked up. We head off to the studio. 23rd floor. In Studio 1, Ethan Graham, president of GNN, is commending Mr. Clifford on his innovations, such as "Yanma cameras". Meiko heads off to get the videos, and Roger invites us on a tour of the studio. A cameraman says there are rumors that the staff will be switched up soon. Keith Norman is the assistant director, and he works with the Yanma. They're carrying cameras. Then an obnoxious lady named Olga comes in, asking about the location of her darling Purugly. A comedian named Max Warhol was dozing off at his desk, and mistakes Tim for a new member of the staff. His partner is a Chatot. Tim's never heard of him, which sends him into a funk. He also hosts the music show.

This is very disorienting, but we finally find the sub control room. We meet Hiro Morgan and his partner Hoothoot. He teases Emilia about Tim being her boyfriend. Then we get tasked with shooting with the Yanma cameras. Pikachu's hamming it up as expected. Wait, I wasn't paying enough attention to know what to input here! Oh, I sort of have some freedom here. I just have to do it as I see fit. The first three movements seemed okay, so let's just change up this last bit. We rejoin Pikachu, and Olga shows up again. Mr. Graham ropes us into helping search for Purugly. Apparently it's wandered off before, though another staffer says that Olga is so unpleasant that if it was abducted, there'd be no shortage of suspects. Roger says he thought he saw it out in the hall, and it should still be on this floor. One of the Yanma says Purugly is really picky and tended to swat at the cameras with its tail when it inevitably saw something it disliked in the footage. Another cameraman says it doesn't get along with Max's Chatot and has staring contests with it. And the last being in the room, the second Yanma, gives us something concrete: out the right door. We walk two steps away from the screen and get sucked into a cutscene. Pikachu is entranced by music, and stumbles into a room where Carina Mitchell is playing violin along with her partner Kricketune. Pikachu's even more entranced by her appearance. Kricketune says Purugly stopped by and shoved it out of the way to take a nap on the sofa. Heh, when Kricketune's intro said "attractive middle-aged musician", I thought it was just referring to the mustache, but when Pikachu starts commenting on how gorgeous Carina is, Kricketune gets protective an says she's like a daughter to him. Carina's nervous about being in the spotlight--she's fine while playing, but talking to the cameras will be tough. Max and Chatot are in the next dressing room. Chatot says it might be in the next dressing room over, because it's Purugly's daily routine to "go around and make sure no young Pokmon stars get too full of themselves." Max adds something about Purugly's physical appearance that winds up in our testimony. Over in the sub control room, there's some static on the video. Oh, right, one of the cameramen was complaining about the camera going black! Hiro adds another bit of testimony about Purugly, namely its tendency to use its tail as a corset. We meet Mimikyu in the hallway, and it's hostile to Pikachu. Unfortunately, the next dressing room is Olga's, so the testimony we receive is our red herring. Next dressing room, we find Mimikyu again. It says at this rate, it'll lose to Magnemite. We probably passed it in the hall, he says. But Mimikyu doesn't even have a prompt for talking about Purugly. Next is a Mawile, which has nothing useful to say, and its human partner, who doesn't help us with our current goal but nevertheless saw something weird--this dressing room door would normally be locked when no humans are around so the Pokmon don't run off, but it wasn't. She says her Mawile's specialty is calligraphy. I seem to have made the full rounds, though. Maybe I need to go into case notes? Yeah, I can start using things. The first piece of testimony is to comment on its staring contests with Chatot, but for which Pokmon it might be involved with, the answer is Kricketune. However, the piece of information I'm looking for as to why isn't part of the available testimony--its routine of harassing the new stars. Maybe it isn't Kricketune? We need two pieces of testimony, and the only ones we have are Hiro's dream, Mimikyu passing Magnemite in the hall, and Kricketune's sensitivity to sounds--none of which seem relevant, and all of which are disparate enough that I can't see any pair of them both being relevant to the same thing. Huh, the bit about it stealing Kricketune's spot also prompts the next input. As does its vanity. But I'm clearly missing something.

The thing is, there is a mystery that I feel like I can solve right now--the interference with the cameras. That's probably Magnemite's doing. But we can't even acknowledge that as a problem that needs dealing with.

Huh, even Olga's obvious red herring prompted the call for which Pokmon is related to its disappearance. Only the purple ears--the very first thing I tried--gets an immediate rejection. But none of it means anything. I'm left to wandering around and hoping that the Mimikyu/Magnemite thing made a new dialogue prompt appear on someone I talked to prior to witnessing it. It doesn't appear to have. ...Damnit! There'd been so few times that the magnifying glass even appeared in this chapter that I just assumed that I really had checked everything, because I've been running at just about everything hoping I could examine something. But I didn't. There's a black box in the should-have-been-locked dressing room with a warning: "Magnemite inside. Please do not open until filming begins." And we get some testimony affirming that Magnemite's powerful electromagnetic waves cause the equipment here to malfunction. That's what we needed. Except...the only thing that the actual testimony says is that Magnemite is in its cage. So we finally have two pieces of testimony for the third segment that actually seem to relate to the same thing, except they simply contradict each other rather than working together to build a case for something. Ah, if I use Kricketune's statement that it takes other Pokmon's spots as the base statement, that actually works--Magnemite wandered off because Purugly stole its spot; it's in the black box! Even by Purugly standards, it looks fat. So now we go directly to the sub-control room to tell Hiro about the escaped Magnemite. Pikachu gets the idea to use the Yanma cameras to track down Magnemite; they'll start showing static when they get close. We find it backstage. And that concludes our tour of GNN. Oh dear, Olga's part of the show, and her job is to be just as obnoxious as she is off-stage. Well, at least she's supportive of Carina, in her own way.

Or not. The crew says she was against Carina being on the show all the way. They also say Max had been down lately. Ah, Olga is a violinist as well. Talking to Max starts a cutscene between him and Olga. And we figure out one of Max's signals to Chatot for a specific voice mimicry. He leaves, too, and apparently triggering that cutscene was all we needed to be allowed to talk to Hiro. I talk to everyone else first, but they provide nothing we need. Carina's performance begins, and Pikachu is moved to tears. Hiro even says Pikachu's being too loud. Emilia goes to retrieve Olga and Max for the real deal, and Carina asks Hiro what she should do in the meantime. He tells her to put her violin backstage...oh dear. I noticed that conspicuous instrument case backstage, because if Ace Attorney taught me anything, it's that instrument cases are always relevant to the case. No one in this room has anything new to say and the curtain to backstage is closed, so I guess we have to leave? No, Pikachu won't let us. Oh, Hiro's still here. I thought everyone with a name had left. He says the next scene is where the assistant Pokmon gives Carina her violin, and Keith went to get the assistant Pokmon but he hasn't come back yet. That triggers a cutscene; Keith says he mixed up the dates of the schedule and the assistant won't make it. Hiro says he needs a replacement, and Mimikyu jumps around enthusiastically, only for Hiro to suggest that Pikachu do it, as he seems to love music. Pikachu's ecstatic, but this is going to be trouble. Then the two cameraYanma crash into each other, right above the violin, and the cameras fall and smash it. Okay, that wasn't quite what I expected to happen. Yanma did say the person it normally received orders from wasn't there, but... Yanma says it wasn't their fault. Both Yanma say they moved exactly as the staff told them to.

The human crew confirms that those directions would've obviously caused a crash, but that they were indeed following the cue sheet. Camera 1's instructions were "shoot from above, shoot from the left, shoot from the right, move in". I notice that the second of these has a green arrow instead of the usual red ones. Another staffer has the script. Hiro suggests that Hoothoot's signal also could've been delayed. Interference with the sub-control room could mess things up. We're allowed to leave the studio now. Keith's right there with the cue sheet for Camera 2. Shoot from above, shoot from the right, move away, and follow. That shouldn't have caused problems, should it? Ah, no, wait, they're both trying to shoot from above at the start. He says the original cue sheet should be at the sub-control room, which is where we were headed anyway. Roger and Ethan are here, and suddenly Ethan doesn't seem so generous; he's angry that they have to pay for Carina's violin and says he told Roger to get rid of any useless staff members. Ah, that green one was to call attention to the issue; the original version of the Camera 1 instructions had Camera 1 moving out rather than shooting from the left as the second instruction. Looks like that's all we need--the disparity. Tim thinks that it's possible that the culprit was gunning for Carina directly, as if not for Keith's mistake necessitating a practice run with Tim there, Carina herself would've been in that spot for the accident. We beeline to her dressing room and explain what happened. She says that the violin is one-of-a-kind, a memento of her grandfather. There's a message on the inside of the back plate. Pikachu says that he helped Kricketune pick up the pieces of the violin, but saw no message on the back plate. And we examine the broken violin to confirm. This is a fake. The real goal was to steal the one-of-a-kind violin made by Carina's grandfather and then destroy the evidence that the switch had been made. Well, even if the target was the violin and not Carina herself, there's still no viable suspect other than Olga. Carina says she didn't notice the switch, but from the tone, she thinks the one she used for her performance was still the real one. Kricketune agrees, and it would know. It also said that the fake violin seemed softer than the real one. I start for the door, but get a Pika-prompt to figure out when the violin was swapped. I say that it was swapped out during preparations, but that's not right for this input--we're supposed to input that when Pikachu was carrying it, it was definitely already the fake. Then that the real one was still there during the performance, then that it's because of the tone, and...we don't have to explicitly say that it was swapped out during preparations; we're done with this prompt. We start investigating alibis. Hiro and the nameless staffers were all still in the studio, and Keith was on a lower floor searching for the assistant Pokmon. He says he ran into Emilia on the way back, who had just finished fetching Max and Olga. Pikachu prompts us to talk to Hiro again, and we learn that Max was in debt, giving him a motive for the theft. Emilia says she didn't actually see Max and Olga; they seemed busy, so...*facepalm* she just told them what she needed to through the door. Which in all likelihood means Olga has no alibi--what she actually heard was likely Max and Chatot. Chatot's Olga impression even tells people to "go away"--Emilia certainly can't be faulted for not confirming Olga's presence. We run into Mimikyu in the hall, and it says it was going around the dressing rooms while avoiding the staff, trying to promote itself. In the randos' dressing room, Ekans and Magnemite are having a stupid argument about which of their talents is better, and Tim says that's like comparing Leppa Berries to Oran Berries. Oi.

There's another Pika-prompt, but it's just to tell me to look everywhere. Olga's dressing room is up next, and both she and Purugly agree that she was in the dressing room brushing Purugly. She says a staffer did come to get her, but then something odd happened. Pikachu seems to think she couldn't be the culprit. She said that afterwards, someone came and was beating on the door, but when she looked through the window, she didn't see anything. Next stop, sub-control room; we don't even have to speak to any of them to get them all alibied out. And we finish at Max's dressing room. We get another "Tim, be sure to remember what people told us" rather than "Hm...now that I think about it, this person couldn't be the culprit" after talking to Max and learning that, like Olga, he didn't actually see Emilia, only heard her. Chatot says it was watching TV, and it was excited because Max told it he'd give it its snack early. It also says that in addition to Emilia, a Pokmon stopped by. And rammed into the door, same as what happened with Olga. Chatot cried out in surprise, and the Pokmon ran off. We try Chatot's signals. Snapping Tim's fingers makes Chatot imitate Mr. Graham; whistling makes it imitate Hiro; adjusting his collar does nothing, and stamping his foot, as seen before, provokes the Olga impersonation. Pikachu figures the two doorbangings are related. Talking to Carina suggests that Olga also has motive, as she'd previously asked about acquiring the violin, and also makes another checkmark. Pikachu is confused; all suspects have alibis. Allegedly. We get a prompt after leaving the room and say there was a faked alibi. ...Damnit it is Max. I'll bet you anything that knocking on the door to the dressing room is the cue for Chatot to imitate Max himself. Pikachu says that the four people that were out and about--Max, Olga, Keith, and Emilia--are the only four possibilities. Tim questions this last one, and Pikachu says he knows how Tim feels, but a detective must remain objective. He also suggests talking to Mimikyu again. ...Uh, where's Mimikyu? Ah, it's in the studio. And, hmm, it confirms that when it knocked on Max's door, it heard Olga's voice. So no, the knocking was interpreted as the cue for the Olga impersonation. Pikachu gets his bolt of brilliance and scares the staffer in the sub-control room off his chair, and is about to declare the culprit when Mimikyu pushes the wheeled cart he's standing on away and takes over the stage. Ah, but Emilia didn't knock once loudly the way Mimikyu did; she knocked three times. That's a separate cue. It's Max. We've got him. Olga says she's never seen a message, and Tim and Carina reveal that it's something only Carina would know, because it was on the inside and she saw it being made. We accuse Max of knowing where the real one is, and he says he was in his dressing room the whole time. We say it was Chatot in there, and knock on a table three times, at which point Chatot says "Gotcha! I'll be right out!" in Max's voice. Emilia confirms that's exactly what she heard. And Chatot says "Admit it! Admit it!" like it did before. Then it adds "You have to admit it!" a couple of times. He wasn't sure the show would be picked up again, and he needed it to pay off his debts. Roger says that wouldn't have been a concern, but now he has to call the police. Then Meiko comes back with the tapes.

Charizard is leading the parade, carrying Buneary. Prinplup and Stufful are also marching, as are Ivysaur and Meganium; Hoppip and Skiploom are flying along, carrying balloons. Then Charizard keels over like it's in pain, and when it gets back up, its eyes are red. It scares the people off, attacks Meganium, and then flies into the air and starts spouting off its Flamethrower. Wait, no, the balloon Pikachu was talking about was in Charizard's hands! We replay the video, and it was carrying a balloon, and right before it keeled over, the balloon popped. The R was probably in the balloon. Slowing it down shows a needle popping the balloon...and rewinding it further, we see a Skorupi! Of course! We learned about the person with the Skorupi from Buneary, and they'd certainly know Pin Missile, which I figured was the most likely attack to have been used. But the man with the Skorupi...Emilia thinks it almost looks like it could be Keith! Tim asks if Keith was working with them then, and she says no, not with them; Meiko says she doesn't think he was even working for GNN back then. Oh hell no. There were two separate culprits! Max stole the violin, but he wasn't the one who changed the cue cards--Keith did that, and Carina's violin, had it actually been there instead of Max's fake, was merely to be collateral damage. The fact that Carina was supposed to be there would simply further obscure the motive--Tim and Pikachu were the target, because the one who orchestrated the Yanma crash was the one person who knew that they'd be in position for it--the one who "messed up" the scheduling for the assistant Pokmon! Roger confirms that Keith only joined six months ago. They're definitely convinced it's him, even only seeing him from behind--though as I just noted, when you consider that it was Keith's "blunder" that put Tim and Pikachu in place for the accident, it's quite plausible. Pikachu has come to the same conclusion I did, and notes that it was Keith who told Tim where to stand while Pikachu was bringing out the violin. Tim wonders if Keith an Max were working together. Pikachu says they can't rule it out. I don't think it's the case--there's no real reason that the violin switch and the camera crash need to be related. It's confirmed that Keith has left the studio, and the music is more intense now. We see Keith in the hall, running. The elevator's going up? He's heading to the roof, not to the main entrance. Why? He's got an aerial exit plan? Skorupi is to keep us busy. It uses Poison Sting. Help is on its way, Keith says...it's a Noivern! I initially press the button much too early. On the second try, I save Pikachu, and something comes out...some sort of device. Or was it the locket? It changed colors...it's more than it appears. End of chapter.

Chapter 7 is at Ryme Wharf. Flashback to the accident, and confirmation that Mewtwo was there. Looking around the apartment reveals a "Detective Journal" monthly magazine. The locket turns out to be a camera. There are pictures of R, and a building that Detective Baker identifies as Ryme Wharf. Tim wants to investigate, and Pikachu expects Baker to say it's too dangerous, but he just asks that they take his partner Accelgor with them to keep them safe. Accelgor runs off due to its shyness, which is bad because it has most of the photos. It's not far, though. We see the photos of the warehouse, Keith with a broad-shouldered henchman, the inside of the warehouse, a scientist, and R. A man tells us that Warehouse Districts A and B are for storing machinery, and that he recognized the pair in the photo from a couple of months ago. Another says A and C are for food, and recognizes the henchman, saying he comes from either A or B, because he comes from the south. We get a prompt unlocking a new set of questioning, about the containers. Machamp says he helped the man move his containers, but he dropped one and the contents were stinky. The first man tells us that blue containers--which the second man said the blond man worked with--are for food. Based on everything we have, I think we need to go to area A! I feel like we're ready to solve the next puzzle, but it seems we need more pieces of testimony than we even have at the moment. Rattata gives us the last piece, because that's the only one we haven't talked to. We have to double case notes to solve this. Then comes a lengthy infiltration sequence. I miss the second prompt the first time, then fail to expect that there'd be a third prompt right after the second and end up going way too early because I was mashing through. The blonde man from the photo is there, and the captions identify him as factory manager Alexander Wilde. We get confirmation that their boss is Keith Norman. There's a first-day worker, so we get to hear an explanation of what they make here: health food. Thus the stink. Also, a warning never to hit a certain switch, as it reverses the conveyor belt. That's probably a thing we'll have to do. And never, ever go near a certain door, where there's supposedly a scientist. It's all top secret and should be avoided. A Spinarak scares Pikachu; it also snuck in, looking for a snack. It might help us if we get it one. The front door guards say they're incubating something in the scientist's room. There's something that they give a treat to, though; says it warms their heart. Maybe it's this Pansage we just met that's doing laundry? Heh, he's the partner of Simon, the scientist. Pansage says Simon hasn't been enjoying his work since he came here, and hasn't been allowed outside in months, though Pansage can come and go as he pleases. And confirms something about "cells". Tim concludes that Simon must have been Dr. Waals's assistant, the only other one who could incubate Mewtwo's cells. Pansage confirms my theory about being the one the workers were talking about; says that the factory manager is scary but everyone else is really nice. We need help from the Pokmon. Pansage will cause a distraction, Accelgor will flip the switch, and Spinarak will sneak us down to the first floor. Simon Yen is working with the Mewtwo cells. We're about to explain how we know about that when Wilde comes in, but we manage to stay hidden. Wilde says this is the last shipment. We get information on R, as well as learning that Harry infiltrated a couple months back and stole some of the R, and Simon gives us the key to the storage room. We also grab Spinarak its snack, allowing us to return to the second floor. We then solve a Strength puzzle and proceed to the storage area.

Pikachu says the room we're in is familiar and he's really close to remembering something. We find a plan to export R laying on the table. We learn that it can only be produced using the machine under PCL and that they have purchased a location for a new manufacturing facility. Next, they must find a wealthy patron who is comfortable keeping secrets. The warehouse at Ryme Wharf is to be a temporary base of operations, but the goal is to move production overseas. We also find a Production Report authored by Carlos. It says R has different properties depending on if it's in liquid or gas form, allowing it to be used in different ways depending on the situation. Both forms are nearly odorless, so only Pokmon with an acute sense of smell can detect it. Hm, don't we know such a Pokmon? I can't remember which one, though...oh, right! Brad's Manectric, wasn't it? The incident at the park was a good example of its properties as a gas. Popping the balloon dispersed it approximately three feet, sufficient for most needs. The best way to utilize it in liquid form is to inject it into food. The effects are amplified when the two types of liquid, red and green, are mixed together. In fact, the best way to gain the effects of R is to inject the liquids separately into food; any Pokmon that consumes the food will have its effects amplified. They've begun working on a capsule form that will be less fragile and better at mixing the liquids than the vials they currently use, increasing durability and portability. Furthermore, the capsule device will allow the user to mix the liquids whenever they choose. More research is needed to counter its drawbacks: its effects are temporary, and it's impossible to communicate with a Pokmon under the influence of R. Carlos planned to continue research on R in order to develop a new version that will allow the power-enhancing effects to last an extended period of time, while also allowing the Pokmon's partner to communicate with it.

A box catches Piikachu's interest. He seems to remember it. There's a jar inside, and despite Tim's exhortations to be careful, Pikachu opens it. He seems to be out of it, and he says that he guesses that wasn't a dream after all. It seems he made quite the commitment. To...Mewtwo? Oh, he promised to recover the Berserk Gene and capture the mastermind of the R case. In his dream, he was pleading with Mewtwo to save Harry. He guesses it offered to help him if he helped it first. Tim asks why Mewtwo would rely on Pikachu for something so important, and he gets incensed, saying he has a reputation as a great detective. We make to leave, but Wilde is there and sees us. We escape via a few quick-time events. Simon proposes shipping us to the headquarters in a container. Tim gives the notes on their plans to Accelgor to take back to Baker. And...end chapter already? Another short one, I guess because we changed locations so quickly? Chapter 8 is called "Where R Goes". We're in another storage space. We head upstairs and meet with two Rattata--one Alolan, one Kantonian. The Alolan Rattata says it wasn't paying attention and ended up here, but it made a friend so it's okay. Kantonian Rattata likes this place because there's a lot of food and it made a new friend, and gives us directions to where the men went. We head up the elevator and...are we on a cruise ship? We are! We're on a luxury cruise ship! A Lapras and some Brionne are lounging in the pool, and a Frillish is serving as a waiter. Frillish says the ship is so big that it gets lost frequently, and they don't serve any hot drinks because they'd cool off by the time it got them to their destination. The ship is called the "Prime Treasure". One person saw them heading to the lounge, though most people haven't seen a thing. Another Frillish on the upper deck is on a "very important mission", but won't say what it is. There are also NPCs we can't interact with here. I finally find the door to go inside and the lounge should be straight ahead.

There's nothing to interact with in the hallway, so I head back to the lounge. The man at the cafe reveals that the Frillish not carrying trays will take your luggage. We get confirmation from a pair of Krokorok bouncers that the men we're looking for are in the room they're guarding, but they won't let us in. As we head back downstairs, we run into Emilia, who's here to cover the festival and to interview the famous chef Gino Farina. We learn that the room we can't get into houses the Prime Treasure Show, and the man at the cafe says he's heard plenty of customers complaining about not being able to get tickets, but none talking about having actually gone to it. Very suspicious, and none of the tourists in the lounge have been able to get tickets. We also receive a drink order form for the Frillish. After confirming no one on the deck has seen the show either, we order drinks from the Frillish. On the way back to the lounge, we go into cutscene mode, and hear a scream. We meet the elderly Rose Milton, who was spooked by a strange thing in her bag. That's a Cofagrigus mask. Her partner, Snubbull, was also frightened. It must have gotten into her bag between when she handed it off to the staff this morning for boarding and when she got it back. Oh, it was a different bag, likely a mix-up. Ms. Milton is friends with the captain and wishes to let him know. We leave her room, and it cuts to Emilia's interview with Gino Farina. Walter Eckhart is the captain, and he's there during the interview. Emilia recognizes the mask from the news; it's apparently stolen. Mr. Graham is letting Emilia help with the investigation in exchange for an interview with Tim when it's all over. Pikachu speculates that maybe Keith isn't the only bad guy here, and the thief brought it here to try to sell it. Hm, so maybe the show is actually a black market. Pikachu seems to dislike Graham's single-minded focus on ratings. We take an elevator to the bridge. The captain doesn't know much about the show, either, because the shows are planned by the committee. This ship's a bit unusual, you see; the passengers are the owners. All rooms are privately owned, and everything from the shows to the next destination are decided by a committee run by the passengers. ...Well that's convenient. Obviously the "committee" are our enemies; Keith's organization. The ship is their base of operations, and because it's mobile--and a ship, no less--it's able to avoid law enforcement agencies. The captain also said that the suitcase's owner seems to have had an interest in the show, too. That supports my theory. The note says "The Prime Treasure Show; Iced Tea; the usual Frillish; Umbrellas and yellow deck chairs." There's also a ticket. Nosepass, who serves as the captain's partner and compass, seems to have taken a shine to the mask. Pikachu suggests talking to the Frillish to investigate. I'll bet it's the luggage Frillish that we should be talking to. We meet another luggage Frillish in the hall and he mentions the one on the second floor of the deck that's "always slacking off", saying it's unfair that he gets to take it easy. Hmm, seems I was on the right trail. That particular Frillish is probably "connected". I talk to him, and he doesn't claim to know anything when asked about "the usual Frillish", but says he doesn't have much time to talk to the other Frillish, and when Pikachu presses the issue, says that he has to be ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. The waiter Frillish back on the first floor said he had a strange customer persistently trying to order something not on the menu--specifically, a book. He was lying around as if he owned the place, and he was blue. Also, the Frillish on the second floor did some work today for once. We talk to the man in blue, and he said he was just a first-timer trying to blend in with the regulars; he saw someone receive a book from a Frillish and thought that you could order books from them too.

The man can't tell the Frillish apart, but told us that the woman with the Cinccinos is the one who received the book. She plays dumb, but her partners tell us that she did receive a book from the Frillish with the sharp features--the second floor Frillish. And their partner had been up on the second floor, looking down and counting something on the first floor. We confront it and it says it'll bring us a book if we "order properly". We have to figure out what it is. I count 6 umbrellas and...7 chairs? 7 yellow-striped deck chairs, but six yellow chairs of the smaller kind. We look down from where the woman was and confirm, 6 umbrellas, 7 deck chairs. We give it the order and receive the Prime Treasure Auction Catalog. I was right! Please have your ticket with you; dress code is semi-formal. The items for auction: Detective's Cape, Henry Brothers' Recipe Book, Mask of Antiquity...and exclusive buying rights to R for six months is on there, too. Hmm...Henry Brothers' Recipe Book? Wasn't Gino talking about finding their lost recipe? Going back towards the bridge, though, we cut right there and the mask's been stolen. It disappeared in the blink of an eye, Nosepass said. We learn that two crew members had been in the room. Nosepass says the ship changed direction so that Nosepass, who always faces north, couldn't see it any more, and then it was gone when it changed back. So the one in charge of steering was probably involved. Nosepass also says it was splashed by cold water when it couldn't see the mask. The one who delivered the report also noted that it was wet up there. He also says that Gino wanted to know the exact time he'd next be visiting the bridge. The one who does the steering, however, said nothing strange aside from the Pokmon next to him spilling its drink. Pikachu now suspects Gino based on the reporting crewman's testimony. Graham says Gino will be on the second floor of the deck. Ah, Snubbull was the one who spilled its drink! And it's shaking again...I suspect the mask was able to "disappear" like that because it did, in fact, belong to a Cofagrigus. Snubbull says that it wasn't its fault the drink was spilled; it saw something invisible drink the juice. Definitely a Ghost-type. Snubbull growled at it and startled it, making it drop the juice. Whatever it was briefly appeared and claimed ownership of the juice. The word "wet" keeps appearing, though, which makes me suspect a Water-type. Could it be the Frillish? They're Water/Ghost. Of course, it could have just disappeared with Acid Armor. Gino claims one of the Pokmon played a prank, splashing him with water, and he came to the second floor to dry off. He claims ignorance as to the existence of the Henry Brothers' Recipe Book. Brionne confirms that Gino was splashed by one of its balloons. It claims the balloon had been empty, but suddenly a Pokmon was inside, and Gino got splashed when that Pokmon fell into the pool. Back to suspecting a Cofagrigus. Pikachu seems to have an idea of who did this. Ah, because the invisible Pokmon came in with a crew member while it was still wet from falling into the pool. Pikachu thinks the disappearing drink is related, and that anything the invisible Pokmon puts in its mouth becomes invisible too. Okay, so maybe I'm off. We're going to consult Emilia's hand-drawn Pokdex to identify the culprit. Just as I suspect when Pikachu keeps keying on the word "invisible", it's a Kecleon we're looking for. And it'll reveal itself when it gets surprised, just like what happened with Snubbull. Summation time. Gino denies knowing Kecleon. He's confronted with the knowledge of the secret auction and the Henry Brothers' Recipe Book. But now for the auction. Emilia says she could do it, as she brought a dress for conducting the interviews, but Tim doesn't want her to go alone. Ms. Rose offers the use of her husband's jacket, and even has a bow tie for Pikachu. The bouncers let them in, and he's told to "put these on once you're inside". Masks! Of course there are masks.

We ask around, and the ticket apparently has how much money he has to spend. 90 million; Gino was pretty loaded, or expected to be after selling the mask. There's a man disappointed that the mask has been pulled from the auction, and a Chandelure is swarming around a display case with a necklace, admiring its reflection in the jewels. Another customer mentions that she's disappointed about another pulled item--Carina Mitchell's violin! Oh dear, so that's why it went missing... There are two men admiring the Detective's Cape, and then there's the ones looking at the Henry Brothers' Recipe Book. Talking to Emilia again lets us distract Chandelure, and we get to see the Goddess's Necklace. Another customer interested in it gives us tips on winning bids. There are only three opportunities to raise your bid, and you have set amounts that you can raise it by: 3 million, 5 million, and 10 million. We investigate our rivals for other pieces, and get that the woman obsessed with the recipe book can bid up to 40 million, and that she's cautious, raising her bid by 3 million first, then 5, then 10. For the cape, the man is aggressive, always going for broke and raising by 10 million at a time. He's got up to 50 million. Do we need to properly use all of our money to grab both items? ...Wait, I shouldn't have gone all the way to 50 million proper for the cape; I could've gotten it at 48 million. Wait, I can salvage this. Just go aggressive twice, and her cautious bid of 3 million will make it 38 million after my second bid. And there's Keith, with the capsules with red and green liquids. Battle time. Keith uses the R on the Krokorok to try to stall us. Pikachu slides down the banister to knock Skorupi away, and Tim tries to grab Keith as he's getting away. We knock him off of his Noivern, and Chandelure catches us. Heh, it wasn't until I saw how that Chandelure reacted when Emilia gave it her earrings that I realized that even though it's basically a given in this continuity that all humans have a Pokmon partner, Emilia hadn't been introduced with one. Keith says he won't be giving them any information, but that he can't imagine Harry's alive after going off that cliff, and he seems to suggest that even though he's been captured, the parade's still in danger. Emilia says she regrets covering the accident at Fine Park, because that led to the park being shut down and the Pokmon being separated. Just because something is true doesn't mean it should be broadcast. Pikachu's nowhere to be found, and the fireworks start. Emilia says they're beautiful, and Tim says yeah, so beautiful, but he seems to be looking at her, not the fireworks. Cut to Mewtwo and Pikachu talking. Mewtwo confirms that Pikachu remembers his promise, and Pikachu says he's fulfilled his end of the bargain. Mewtwo says that's not true yet. Some of its cells are still out there somewhere. Pikachu asks how Mewtwo knows that, and Mewtwo can't say, only that it feels them. It says it can't allow them to remain in this world, and it must destroy them with its own hands. Humans can't be trusted. Pikachu says it's the tedious type, and Mewtwo says it could just destroy everything. Pikachu stops it, and Mewtwo says "you stopped me back then, too. The real you, that is. You were the one who told me that the human world can be tedious, which is why I trusted you to take care of things for me. But now it seems there are some humans that can be dependable." Pikachu tells Tim what Mewtwo said, and we investigate Keith's room. He had information on GNN's shoot of the festival, and a memo marked "leading up to the finale". A mysterious patron wanted Keith to cause the biggest incident yet, and consider the most effective location and time and plan carefully. The dispersal locations will be a location with the most Pokmon present and a location that is part of a GNN shoot. There will be three kinds of R to disperse--the two they have tested, Liquid R and Gaseous R, and the new development, Capsule R.

Emilia says they didn't decide on their locations until after Keith left GNN, but the memo said "all information will be provided." We determine that the mastermind works at GNN as well. Hmm...I think I have an idea, and Pikachu was planting the seeds in this chapter. Mr. Graham sees this all as one big publicity opportunity! Chapter 9 is at the carnival. The parade's already started. Half the Unova Dex seems to be there. Oh, there are multiple parades, and true fans plan how to view the most parades possible. We have to figure it out. Ah, there's only one location where all three parades meet! They'll all converge in the central square at 8 PM. The parade's finale! And it's already past seven. We get to investigate. One woman seems to be "marked" by the game, and speaking to her reveals that there's a wagon full of treats for the Pokmon in the parade. That's where the liquid R will be dispersed! Ah, but another one that seems "marked" has absolutely nothing useful. There's a cart with balloons that seems like it could be used for dispersing the gaseous R, but the balloon woman tells us nothing that becomes testimony. A trio of Volbeat is swarmed around one of the balloon decorations, and as we continue down the stairs, Brad and his Manectric are here. As I suspected, they'll be useful in sniffing out R. Illumise is supposed to be the conductor of the parade, but no one except the Volbeat ever show up on time. We get a generic "people gather in the square" testimony--that's probably for the capsule--and run into Meiko, but can't tell her about R. One of the food vendors says the man in the stall next to hers "wasn't very friendly, but worked quickly". Probably the suspicious one, since the Wharf had food, too. The man had a yellow hat and kept looking over his shoulder. Yeah, another man says that the yellow hat man tried to intimidate him when his daughter was taken with one of the balloons. Yes, he was putting balloons up four at a time, the young girl said. Volbeat's flight path will be the parade route. We talk to Emilia, and get a changed prompt for telling Pikachu when we see something suspicious. As for the capsule R, we should think about that last. The Volbeat have moved to a different set of balloons, and the ones they were previously swarming around are in a group of four and contain a pink one like the girl mentioned. Mr. Clifford hears us mention R. "Run away if you're in trouble" gets added as testimony...was my hunch wrong? Ah, but as we're about to report back to Emilia, Mr. Graham is there. He makes a joke about how if Tim's there, there's sure to be a scoop. We head to the stall that was pointed out as suspicious, and there's R there. And then we're told that someone had been connected to both, and it's the man in the yellow hat. We split up with Brad to corner him and get the Capsule R. But then Holiday arrives and says that Keith did the evil gloating thing and there's still a fourth batch of R. All communication came from the mastermind's end; Keith didn't know how to contact the mastermind. Communication was through letters and calls. As for Keith's motives, it was all about how well the mastermind paid, nothing more. Where would the R be hidden...maybe the clock tower! A bunch of quick time events follow, including one with an actual timer. But now to figure out who the mastermind is. Pikachu says there was only one incident where Keith directly tried to cause Tim harm. Which one was it? Oh, right, the one at the station. And the clue is...the information received from the mastermind. Oh...Roger shouldn't have known about Pikachu's inability to use moves, but Keith would! That's the proof of connection! Roger confirms it.They destroyed the circuitry, but it can be activated manually. We ask him why smuggle R at all, and he gives a generic "take over the world" answer. To start, he needed GNN to be the most influential network in the world.

We then ask why target the carnival, and he says it's a great opportunity to gather information on R because of how many Pokmon would be in one place, and if GNN gets the scoop on it, that's all the better. He can control all the information in Ryme City. But such a plan needed money. Still, he has the cells already...but that's long enough for Pikachu to get to him. Still, he recovers, and it's his Noivern. Its eyes are red, like R's been used, but it's too calm! They must have fixed the second issue! Noivern still recognizes its partner. It tries to break the tank, and Tim gets in the way. Pikachu jumps in and finally regains its ability to use electric-type moves. It's 8 PM. Case closed. We have the cells. Meiko admits that she would've sooner expected Graham, too, and he says he can hear her. Pikachu says he's held up his end of the bargain and returns the cells, and Mewtwo says there's not much time and asks if he's decided which one to choose. Pikachu's only asleep, but before that happens, he confirms that Mewtwo knows Harry. Mewtwo says Harry is still alive and Tim will find him provided he does not give up, but leaves before giving Tim any further answers. Back in the office, Tim can no longer understand Pikachu...oh, no, wait, Pikachu was just pranking Tim. Pikachu asks what's next, and Tim says looking for his father, hopefully with the Great Detective Pikachu as his partner. They walk off into the white, and it seems Pikachu doesn't remember using Thunderbolt to save the day. The credits roll. Huh, even with the major case solved, that ending felt kind of...not like an ending. Now I'm curious as to whether Tim finds his father in the movie; leaving that hanging seems even less like something a movie would do than a video game. So, yeah. That was Detective Pikachu. That was really a strange ending, though; the last scene with Mewtwo created so many questions and answered none. Decided which one to choose...

Aha! It has in fact been confirmed that there's a sequel to this game in the works, which will be for the Switch. Guess I'll have to keep this alive long enough to get to that. Heh, so this is actually going to be a series...cool, we'll have another series to work with. Probably going to be a bit of a break before AA6, though; there's some stuff going on right now so I'll probably just work on finishing the games I already have before making any fresh purchases.
