The MK fandom is pretty terrible, but most fighting game fandoms are terrible so the problem isn't exclusive to MK. Any time a new iteration of an existing fighting game franchise comes out, people are gonna bitch relentlessly about how the roster doesn't have their favorite character so the roster sucks and the game sucks and they're not gonna buy the game because the developers suck and the developers don't care about their fans and blah blah blah blah blah. Rinse and repeat forever.

Well, young Johnny is in his original outfit. Liu also has his original outfit, I think.

And Baraka's damn near naked in one of his other loadouts.

And right, the original outfits on women were ridiculous, there's no argument there.

The outfits are fine. But people were bitching because they're idiots, and instead of just ignoring the bitching, they went "Well anything less than what we put them in would be impractical" and that's just silly and made the idiots get even louder.

None of the women are straight forward martial artist types like Liu or MK9-era Johnny though. Kitana and Jade have bodysuits like Scorpion and Sub-Zero because they're ninjas. Cassie needs a more full outfit than an MMA fighter because she's got guns and shit to hold.

like sure, I guess Kitana could have cut out the middle part of the suit to show off her midriff... but why would she? I think tha part of the practicality argument is there's no practical benefit to sexying the outfit up.

I think that's based on their specific fighting style. Liu's not going to wear armor because it's going to weigh him down when he's doing cool karate stuff, but then Scorpion's got a full ninja outfit and parts of that are armored... and Shao Kahn is so inhumanly strong that he doesn't need armor probably

I think Sonya's makes sense if you think about it as the outfit she's wearing for a whole mission, not just during the minute and a half she spends Kung fu fighting with D'Vorah or whatever. She's doing military shit, she probably has useful stuff in those pockets.

Skarlet I guess is uh... hanging out in deserts all the time? It does seem like a lot to wear.

I think the only weird thing is that in most outfits, they refuse to let any of the females show any skin, even in the alt costumes. It's a weird kind of dichotomy when the most skin on a girl is wearing a tank top while the men are full on shirtless. I don't think having, say, female professional wrestling outfits would have been bad on some of them. These guys are all clear wrestling fans, so they have to at least understand that.

That said, most outfits are pretty quality anyway so I'm not totally heartbroken. The only one I think makes no sense at all is Skarlet. If anyone should have less clothes on than most, it's Skarlet. Because she's a mad, crazy chick who just wants to absorb the blood of her opponents, so her showing more skin makes sense with that.

But then it feels kind of like Skarlet's character has been retconned (which is weird because they claim the MK Komic is canon and she wasn't like this in that?).

I felt that MK9 was actually really solid and interesting. MKX was decent, but sorely lacking in a lot of interesting elements and totally dropping the ball on character interaction which is honestly the thing I think you can look most forward to. Basically, MKX had a ton of potential and they didn't capitalize on it at all

I think MKX tried too hard to be a Serious Game, and that didn't just go for the story but the whole package. The visuals that were all dull colors washed out even further by glaring sunlight, the HUD that was just flat white everything, the fatalities that felt more like torture porn than traditional MK stuff... Something about it just didn't feel right at all.

Didn't play much last night. I actually did the tutorial stuff and messed around in the Krypt.

But they make you use a lot of people in tutorial and it's really unique. Everyone feels and looks so different, but they feel similar to play as in previous titles. Kind of shocking, actually.

They also have something cool when you practice combos. They have an hourglass thing where it shows you the timing you need to input each button. I love that feature.

And then the Krypt is really cool. It's third person messing around and opening chests and such and solve some puzzles. Enjoyable enough. We'll see when I have more money to blow.

I watched Maximillian play for a few hours before the Steam version unlocks later. He was full of praise for the core gameplay, the online mode and (unlike some others) the story mode, but was heavily critical of the Krypt and how you have to unlock stuff in general. Whatever you get from chests is completely random, whether it's things you want like fatalities, brutalities and skins, or less desirable items like consumables and icons. To unlock everything requires a vast amount of several in-game currencies and seems like it'll take many months of play to do. I suspect how this is viewed might vary from person to person. If you're going to be putting in hundreds of hours into the single player content anyway then you'll unlock everything as a matter of course. If you mainly just want to take your main character or two online, then gaining access to the specific unlocks you want is probably going to be very frustrating.

Got through the first three chapters. I'm really enjoying it so far. There's a lot of really cool stuff there, and even the jobbers are each getting their own time to look cool.

Kotal x Jade feels really weird. You would think Kotal would have hated Raiden a lot more in the previous game because he got Jade killed. Also, I thought I'd really like Jade's new outfit, but it doesn't even look anything like her anymore. At least have a bit more emerald green or something. I also don't love how they didn't explain Jade's absence as a Revenant in the previous game. Missed opportunity to do something cool with that.

Shao Kahn is still awesome. He's a badass. Kotal himself is a pretty cool character so far too. Liu Kang and Kung Lao feel like a good buddy duo that I feel like should have been explored like this in the prior game.

Lack of Dark Raiden now kinda sucks. I think Dark Raiden was my favorite Raiden.

Also, is it just random who came back from the past or did I miss something? I know it's set before Kung Lao gets killed in MK9.

Ronda Rousey is still really bad as Sonya in this game. She actively sticks out in a bad way. Also, why do Sonya and Jax seem younger than they did in the events of MK9?

Anyway, those are all my nitpicks. I still really enjoy the story mode so far though. Good interactions all around.
