The GameFAQs unemployment rate is approximately 12.5% according to yesterday's Poll of the Day. That's over three times the US unemployment rate, even for the age group of 25-34 years. I'm guessing the reason for that is that many gamers are lazy and/or anti-social. That would limit friends and networking, limiting employment opportunities.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of multi-select polls being possible. However, those kinds of polls would be extremely rare if Allen ever chose to run multi-select polls. There are very few poll ideas that would be suitable for a multi-select poll. One possible idea for a multi-select poll could ask you which "numbered" Final Fantasy games you have played (you'd be allowed to select multiple games, one for each game you've played). The main problem with multi-select polls would be making it clear to visitors that they can select multiple options if they want. This requires a short message below the poll stating something to the effect of "This is a multi-select poll - you may select more than one option".

But I can't get down with the X through my choice, looks too much like a crossout. I'd like to see that switched to a check mark.

I was also quite a bit surprised that the Full-Time Work option got almost 58%. At least in the US, Obamacare killed off a lot of full-time jobs due to businesses being required to provide health insurance to their employees if they have at least 50 full-time workers. Retail jobs were most affected by this employer mandate, while minimum wage jobs were disproportionally affected by the mandate. As a result, many people were stuck with part-time jobs, so I thought this would have had some effect on the site's American userbase voting in this poll. Guess not.

Of course, the employer mandate doesn't apply to businesses with less than 50 full-time employees, which would mostly apply to small businesses. So it could still be possible for someone to have a full-time job in the US despite being paid at or just slightly above the minimum wage.

The Full-Time Work option getting almost 58% in this poll means that we have a large enough userbase to support an After Work Vote. Generally speaking, only full-time workers would be expected to contribute towards an After Work Vote. Part-time workers usually don't work enough hours each day to be faced with a situation where they have to wait until getting home from work to vote in the poll, though it could be possible with an 8+ hour work day.

Any explanation to this spike?

It's most likely caused by the new poll layout that was introduced 2 days ago. Several months ago, a feature was removed from the site that allowed mobile users to navigate to the PotD much easier. Without that feature, it seemed like vote totals dropped off slightly and this is supported by the following poll result:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7168-

During the history of that poll, the "All the time" option had been consistently trending upwards until the most recent result where it dropped off in percentage. In 2017, the "All the time" option got 13.09%, but dropped off to 11.88% in the 2018 poll after a feature was removed to allow mobile users to navigate to the poll much easier. I noticed a drop off in vote totals in early August of 2018, which was around the time that feature was removed.

The new poll layout is good for vote totals because mobile users don't have to scroll very far to find the poll now. During the poll when the new poll layout was introduced, we were originally on track to finish with around 11000 votes based on the 12 hour mark, but ended up finishing almost 2600 votes higher than that expected total. In the poll update data from that poll, I uncovered evidence of a vote total spike that happened around the time the new layout went into effect.

This poll layout wouldn't have affected the contest at all. Contest matches were the first thing you saw on the homepage after getting past the site header, even for those on Mobile. The new poll layout only applies to the regular polls.

lol KH3. Currently losing to a remake and might eventually lose to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice depending on how the night vote goes.

So much for a game that had Top 10 potential in the next GotD contest. KH3 currently has the lowest MetaCritic score and lowest GameFAQs user rating out of the 3 main games. I still expect KH3 to be stronger than at least 75% of the GotD 2 field because of playrate reasons, and because this contest will have the weakest overall field of games in any contest.

No doubt kh3 isnt as well liked as it should be. But I think youre underrating how popular RE2 is. Its not just a remake. Its arguably the most popular RE game now. Were talking above Re4. Thats enough to be a GOTY front runner. Its not just a remake. Its nearly a different game.

Also this is a GOTY poll. Weve seen game like, god of war do amazingly well, mass effect 2 even borderlands 2. But lets see how well these games do in a future

Sekiro is a From software game and has a huge following. Im amazed its doing that well considering how hardcore it is.

Out of every 20 people that played both sekiro and KH3 only 2-3 will probably beat sekiro compared to nearly 100% of people who play Kh3.

Nope. That's why I'm asking.

The story is really half-assed with basically the same thing happening over and over so there's no real 'crossover' enjoyment. Most of the characters distinct personalities aren't really made use of, and the same 3 or 4 characters keep appearing in the story without really making use of the expansive roster they have.

The only thing you can really compliment the game on is how each character has their special moves included in the game for you to see and use, but the gameplay gets repetitive real fast because there's not much to it.

It feels like an extremely rushed game all in all. If you played Xenoverse, it's basically that except you completely remove any interesting aspect of the actual story.

Where are you seeing 12.5%? I am seeing 9.86% for not employed and also looking for work, which is closest to how they measure the unemployment rate. The Gamefaqs poll option is quite a bit broader than the unemployment rate, which considers people not to be looking for work if they've become discouraged at not being able to find work and have given up. The U-6 rate, which includes these people and people who would like full-time work but are working part-time because they can't find full-time work, is about double the normally cited unemployment rate, which lines up fairly well with the Gamefaqs number (9% in the US).

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure 58% is far below the average full-time employment rate the US had for the period from its founding to the 2008 crash, at least for people matching Gamefaqs demographics (mostly younger men). Even if you exclude students from the denominator it's still probably quite low compared to historical numbers. It's a lot higher than it's been in the last 10 years but we are seeing near-record lows in the (flawed) official unemployment rate, so that would make sense.

I dunno, I think Baba is You will dominate this year's indie poll. I mean, GameFAQs likes Braid and that's probably as close any other game is. I think the dire results for Anthem and Jump Force show that the voters here aren't going to reward bad games just because they might have played them.

Finally got around to updating the Board 8 wiki page for game playrates, as I had neglected that page for a few months. The following results were all added to the wiki page:

Ocarina of Time - 80.51% (11/23/2018)
Mega Man X - 61.04% (12/17/2018)
Contra - 62.63% (2/9/2019)
Final Fantasy VIII - 70.47% (2/11/2019)
Mario 1 - 94.90% (2/21/2019)
Chrono Trigger - 73.35% (3/11/2019)
EverQuest - 13.55% (3/16/2019)
Super Metroid - 63.77% (3/19/2019)
Resident Evil - 63.46% (3/21/2019)
Final Fantasy VI - 67.93% (4/2/2019)

All-time highs in playrate were set for the following games - Mega Man X, Contra, Final Fantasy VIII, Mario 1, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI.

The latest Mario 1 playrate result could be an outlier here, or simply a consequence of the latest Mario 1 poll being hosted in the form of an ownership poll. The poll did just enough with the poll options to treat it as a playrate poll, though.

Oh yeah, here are the poll updates and trend charts from last month's "What do you do for a living?" poll:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uhnaOSpCYDoRLxUqgu9TvRCoAuoi8zMrTUo6TyHb8dU/pub?gid=2

The 2 most recent versions of that poll both happened on a weekend, making it impossible to say for sure if the After Work Vote exists in weekend polls. Based on what I've seen, there's limited evidence to suggest the presence of an AWV in weekday polls, but no evidence to support its existence in weekend polls. This isn't too surprising given that the ASV generally didn't exist on the weekend back when we still had an ASV, though weekend trends allowed for the kiddies to vote in the morning on weekends, so any ASV trends were diluted on the weekend by taking place over an extended period of time compared to weekdays. The AWV is composed mainly of full-time workers and they're also the same group of workers who are most likely to get the weekend off from working, though there are exceptions to the rule depending on the job.

"College Student" performed best during the Power Hour, Night Vote, late morning vote, and day vote. It performed worst during the early morning vote.

"Graduate Student" performed best during the traditional day vote and also had an above average early morning vote. It performed worst during the early vote/Power Hour and the SNV.

"Part-Time Work" performed best during the board vote/Power Hour and worst during the morning vote and day vote.

"Full-Time Work" performed best during the morning vote with only a slight drop off during the day vote and SNV. It performed worst during the board vote/Power Hour, while the night vote was below average.

"Looking for work" performed best during the early vote/Power Hour and the night vote. It performed worst during the time periods after the night vote.

"Nothing, I'm happy" has somewhat similar trends to "Looking for work", but they are more extreme instead. It performs best during the board vote/Power Hour and drops off harshly after the Power Hour ends, with the SNV being the worst overall time period.

The playrate isn't really as high as the poll would suggest since 28.46% voted for "One or two, I've tried out at least one game in the series", which mostly includes people who aren't really interested in Fire Emblem after trying a game and not liking the series. For a major Nintendo series, this playrate is lower than I would have expected.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7577-

This poll is no substitute for a "favorite Smash game poll" due to the wording of the question. It asks for "best game", not "favorite game". When you ask for "best game", it gets people to take off their nostalgia glasses and take a more objective look at all of the games in the poll before making their vote. With "favorite game", people don't put as much thought into their game and nostalgia is a bigger factor in their vote.

Ultimate is currently winning this poll when it's being asked as a "best game" poll, but I think Melee wins a direct 1v1 match in a contest because it has factors like playrate and nostalgia going for Melee.
