Money used to be a base 60 system, because people were literally paid in 'time".

Of course, I don't know much more than that... so google for more infos

An ideal money system to me honestly would be one that alternates in 5-4-5s.

So the second smallest one is 5 times the smallest. The next after that is 4 times the previous one. And then 5 times the previous one.

Then repeat from there in another 5-4-5 pattern. Just seems to work out nicely.

So for example, for some made-up currency X (if X is reasonably similar to a penny?), there would be a 1X coin, 5X coin, 20X coin, 100X coin/bill, 500 X coin/bill, 2000X um, probably just bill at this point for modern economies, 10000X bill, etc.

The two-dollar bill is definitely a weirdo in this setup, of course. But then? Dimes are as well. Well, same with Half-dollars for that matter.

At least for quarters and 20-dollar bills you can just say that a 4-times-previous is swapped out for a 5-times-previous or vice versa.

There is some concept (especially in fictional settings) to just have each coin/bill just be 10 times the previous one, but the only advantage I see in that is that it makes it marginally easier to abolish the lowest value coin when inflation finally makes the 10-unit coin a better unit to measure with.

Yeah, I guess if you pushed me, I would say that I about agree that it is at least approaching the day when we should dispose of the penny.

Why did humans invent money in the first place?

Oh! I have some actual answers for that one. Or more accurately, I have links to a series of videos I like that can at least explain this fairly well.

The opening sentence of the first video amuses me too. "How did humanity come to accept rectangular pieces of pulped trees as something to spend 8-10 hours a day working for?"

Suffice to say, the people who make this series are remarkably good at making things you wouldn't normally find interesting... well, um... INTERESTING. Seriously, if I were a history teacher, I would actually show these videos off in a bunch of my classes because they are frankly vastly superior at being engaging than whatever droll history book I end up using would be. Well, fortunately, I am not a history teacher. But these guys SHOULD be. Ah, right, I guess they kind of are. Anywho...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nZkP2b-4vo" data-time="

This alone should at least answer the question asked here.

I really do highly suggest looking into the Extra History series as a whole though. It really is an awesome series. I would easily call it underrated.

But I'll post the rest of the "History of Money" series here in case you just want to keep watching.

"Needless to say, he was promptly strangled with a bow string" is the best cautionary tale ever against just literally printing money for the sake of printing money.

Why the US Dollar is so important, in short.

And that is the "history of money" stuff. But yeah, these videos should answer a bunch of questions in addition to the one asked in the first place.

...While still actually being enjoyable.

English money used to be insanely complicated.

4 quarter farthings = 1 farthing
4 farthings = 1 penny
12 pennies = 1 shilling
20 shillings = 1 pound

1 groat = 4 pence
1 florin = 2 shillings
1 half-crown = 2 shillings, 6 pence
1 crown = 5 shillings
1 half-sovereign = 10 shillings
1 half-guinea = 10 shillings, 6 pence
1 guinea = 1 pound, 1 shilling

1 pound = 3,840 quarter farthings, 960 farthings, 240 pennies, 60 groats, 20 shillings, 10 florins, 8 half-crowns, 4 crowns, or 2 half-sovereigns.

I was a cashier in high school, working at a grocery store. Someone paid with a $2 bill, so I had it in my register. A while later, I was running low on singles, and my manager hadnt refilled my drawer with them yet, so I gave change to a guy that included the $2 bill. He went absolutely ape shit, claiming that I was trying to give him make believe money. Wouldnt believe me that it was real. It took other people in line behind me to calm him down and help explain that it was legit. And even that took a while.

It does exist. And I will of course not denouce the fact that it has actual value, obviously.

But a bill for just 2s is... yeah.

Well, I won't argue against a purpose for them if, for instance, some big segment of an economy happened to really be well suited to a bill/coin that is only 2x the value of the next smallest bill/coin, but...

I find it odd that they are actually still being produced. When Inwas a kid I had one and thought that it was this rare and potentially valuable item. I was sure they were no longer produced as there should be more in circulation if they were. I eventually found they weren't anything special and immediately spent that shit.
