We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, were excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.

The planned transition process is already underway in its early stages, with Bungie and Activision both committed to making sure the handoff is as seamless as possible.

I gotta admit, I was expecting this to end up like Halo, with Activision keeping the IP while Bungie went on to something new.

I feel like that's kind of sad as even Activision doesn't seem to value Destiny enough to invest further in it it seems? But I guess it could end up being a good thing too.

This is probably a good thing, but who knows.

I wonder if this means Destiny will be shifting to more of a Games As A Service platform than it is now where you only buy it once and then grab the updates rather than having to reset every few years like the case is now.

I think in the short term this might mean Bungie is more amenable to much-wanted community changes in Destiny 2 like random rolls on all gear rather than Y2 on.

Wonder what Activision does now.

Call of Duty is still going but sells a fraction of what it used to and is slowly declining. Skylanders is done, Tony Hawk is done, Guitar Hero is done. They are running out of classic PS1 games to remake. Their biggest upcoming game (other than CoD obviously) is Sekiro which isn't exactly a huge mainstream smash.

The obvious answer is go much heavier on Blizzard and integration with Blizzard.

Didn't Black Ops 4 sell a shit ton to the point where it was the best selling game of 2018 after only like a month and broke digital records. They can definitely ride that ship for a few years yet.

EDIT: "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launch month dollar sales represent the eighth highest in videogame history since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995," the NPD said. "Black Ops 4 instantly becomes the best-selling game of the year, and the second best-selling game across the past twelve month period, trailing only Call of Duty: WWII."

Yeah it's probably still pretty okay.

In hindsight, the recent moves regarding Blizzard make a lot of sense.

Also I'm not sure if Call of Duty sales are down? I mean yeah they are from their peak, but I was under the impression that their last two games have seen growth in both units and revenue?

Bungie CS on Twitter
Destiny 2 will still receive full support on BattleNet and we do not anticipate any disruption to our services or your gameplay experience.

If it had been EA instead of Activision, then Bungie would probably be closing.

They were going on about digital sales for Black Ops 4 because the physical sales were down so much. Down like 50% from WWII. In the UK at least it was I believe the lowest selling since 4. And it was only the highest selling game of 2018 to that point because Red Dead Redemption 2 came out two weeks later!

With that said, CoD is still a huge franchise. It can easily shed two thirds of its sales from its peak and still be in the top three selling games of a given year. Both things can be true! My point was just that Activision need to do something since they lost all that stuff and their big thing is not AS big, though still pretty big. And I think more Blizzard is the answer.

Isn't that in line with the shift to digital in the UK?

On the reverse end of that, besides the normal digital stuff they went on about, it did double WWII's PC sales. Sounds like it's more of a shift than "sales are down."

EDIT: They also said it was leading Black Ops 3, which was the top grossing game in the series.

Black Ops 3 is not the highest selling CoD, that would be the first Black Ops.

It is surprising that bungie cared to keep rights to destiny. They usually do not like to keep focusing on the same IP for a prolonged time.
