It's voted in the poll as being the best game of the year by a huge margin. What did Nintendo do with the game that sets it apart from the previous iterations? I mean, I played a little bit of it and the only thing that seemed to be new where some moves and characters. It still seemed to be the exact same game I played on the last few consoles. What makes it be better than the other games on the list that completely evolved their gameplays and stories?

It's more fun than those other games.

Also the story mode of SSBU was way bigger than I ever imagined. It was over 20 hours long for me to 100%.

The story was much better. And they are always tweaking the characters, plus adding new ones, and returning others. I believe how they control are pretty good, as well. Lots of stages. Classic mode is also better. They each kind of have a sort of personalize classic mode. The stickers or whatever are kind of cool. Lots of stages and music. You can make your own playlist for music. And the stages all have different forms... Well, most, at least. Like personally, I like moving stages with hazards. But some dont. And if you like the look of the stage, but not the hazards, you can change them...

Probably other stuff, as well...

That's not the question though. I'm not disputing their game's quality, I just want to know what makes this Smash Bros so exceptional that it is better than the other games on the list, some of which chose to have innovation in their gameplay to go along with their deep detailed stories and character development.

I don't get how people can say the new Smash looks the same as the previous game and yet praise all the various shooters like CoD and Battlefield when those games have been even more same for a longer time.

At least there isn't a new Smash Bros game every year FFS.

I haven't played an FPS since I was addicted to Modern Warfare for the Wii because they're all the same.

I got bored of SSB Ultimate after a week. It felt rushed and lacked new features and game modes. It needs to do what Zelda did and change.

It did have new features. And while the games modes were about the same, it did basically completely change one of them. And improved the others...

Not much from Sm4sh.. a few tweaks, extra characters..

Nothing Sm4sh couldnt have done with a few patches and more DLC.. guessing from the amount of people complaining that their main got nerfed, it may have actually been better

Too bad Nintendo didnt tell everyone not to buy a Wii U

I guess most people skipped the Wii U. That's why I feel like a lot of the Switch's rehashes from it are actually justified on a wider scale.

The biggest Nintendo fans will either refuse to criticise it, enjoy it, or complain from the smallest minority.

More games need to iterate instead of go from scratch. The Monster Hunter series shows what happen in both cases. Most of the games just iterate on the same formula to perfect it. That makes for some awesome games. Every so often they have to refresh as it gets a bit stale (Tri, World), and while every time it brings new people to the serie, the game ends up very shallow and a shadow of its former self, but then they iterate again until they get near perfect.

Smash Ultimate is an iteration instead of starting over so they can fix all of the issues with the previous entry in a way they couldn't have if it was a truly new game. While a part of the community prefers Melee, i think for the majority of people, this entry is the best of a series of amazing gems.

The character movesets are relatively more balanced compared to the previous games. Obviously there are some broken and OP moves, but for me it felt smoother when battling. I know it's debatable whether it's a pure fighter game, but it feels as if they took more time to develop and balance the fighting mechanics across characters.

It's more fun.

Its doesnt need one, though. Well, not a super deep and super developed. Though, Ill probably love that cutscene more than any of RDR2s, tbqh... The original question was asking what makes it different. And possibly why was it better. And the story was better. The 1st and 4th entry didnt have one, IIRC. Melee had an adventure mode that was... eh... That leaves Brawl. Which had a pretty good one. Though, I think it was sort of limited. With characters, at least. But its also been a while, so... But it was still very fun.

This one allows for more freedom with characters and the way you modify them. And being able to go a different way and go back to certain harder battles later in some cases. And having a whole second part after the first.

The only thing I didn't like about Brawl's story mode was it made it WAY too easy to unlock new characters. You could unlock them all in like under 2 hours.

I felt that the spirits worked really well for WoL. Certainly much better than stickers did for SSE, at least. Being able to tweak your character's capabilities to better fit the fight at hand was just fun, especially for the harder fights. They're less applicable to the rest of the game, but they were fun for the duration of WoL.

The one where the Great Fox actually flying is the Melee version. The N64 version is more or less identical to that, except the ship's stationary in Sector Z and substantially larger. I can understand leaving it out, given that it offers virtually nothing that Corneria doesn't.

As adjl mentioned, both stages were remade for Melee and those versions are included in Ultimate, so I can understand why the original N64 versions were left out (though, strangely, Dreamland from the 64 was left in despite getting a similar treatment AND having the original layout present in the form of Battlefield).

The Arwings are for sure and they do shoot in that one (had many a match end badly because of them). The Great Fox's lasers didn't shoot in the N64 version, but I honestly don't recall if you can go down and stand on them like you could in subsequent games (I want to say no - I think they were there, but had no mass, so you just slipped right through them if you jumped down that far).
