I mean...I get normies have no standards for anything but god damn I would have expected...idk SOMETHING good to come out of this.

Every time I give mobile a chance it's always the most inane thing I've ever seen in my life. You click on something, it builds something. Takes 5 minutes. Then it starts asking for money. For me to click on things.

It's the F2P mobile games that give the platform a bad name as many of them (primarily Japanese F2P mobile games and some EA mobile games are pay2enjoy or pay2win).

The platform is insanely easy to use as a cashgrab, which is tempting to many developers. Most devs who are interested in making a truly good game without the need for microtransactions usually don't do so on mobile devices. And even the platform does get a really outstanding game, chances are it will wind up getting ported to consoles or PC.

Not to mention that most people play a mobile game as just something to kill time, so that's what saturates the market. Great mobile games do exist, but they're the exception rather than the norm.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links is a fun mobile game(available on PC aswell) and it's free.

If you like playing Children's Card Games against characters with crazy haircuts and cheesy dialogue then this game is for you or if you're feeling nostalgic because you watched the show as a kid.

There are good mobile games (See: Fire Emblem Heroes, Dragalia Lost, Fate; Grand Order). The problem is that a lot of companies don't see the stuff as anything more than a way to milk micro transactions from their playerbase. As a result it makes 'sense' to make a relatively cheap and easy game and load it down with microtransactions instead of putting serious effort into it. It's why you see so many of the 'match three' kind of games and other stuff with shallow play. Because the goal isn't to hook or appeal to the majority of players. It's to hook on to little children with their parents credit card and 'whales' who will shell out massive amounts of money. The best way to exploit these two groups of players is to give them tons of little roadblocks which can be overcome with 'small' amounts of cash. The rest of the players can go **** themselves. They can sit around and wallow without a legendary Zoidberg card unless they're willing to shell out over $100 for it.

This is why you don't see many high-quality games. The goal isn't to make a good game. It's to make a cheap product and exploit the few players willing to play for far more than they'd pay for a 'normal' game. Those players that shell out $5 - $20? They barely matter and the people who go F2P are basically cosmetic so they can claim that 'you don't HAVE to pay to win'. There's no point in appealing to them.

Of course there are a few high-quality games out there and *some* developers have figured out that it's a good idea to release a high-quality product and offer desirable products as opposed to paywalls, but even then that often devolves down to lootboxes as opposed to other stuff. I mean, Hearthstone's card packs, summoning in Dragalia/Fire Emblem/Fate... Lootboxes. Sure, you can enjoy the full game without shelling out a cent, but your odds of getting that Wedding Camilla are pretty low unless you're either frenching Anna or got mommy's credit card... at which point Anna frenches you.

Mobile gaming is a lot like console gaming before the 83 crash, there's way too many games coming out way too quickly and there's next to no quality control.

And yes, there's the whole free-to-play / pay-to-win aspect

Yea... Disagree with you there. Like, as it's own game, sure. Not something I'd pay for. But if three houses included it as a bonus minigame I think I'd be rather happy.

Depends on why you play video games.
If you like games that never change and want to work when you're not working, including giving the game developers money to work, then mobile gaming is awesome.

If you want challenging, engaging gameplay and stories then no, mobile is not for you and was never meant for you.

I enjoyed my mobage, but I agree that whales are the problem. The longer a game runs, the more devs tend to gear it towards the whale crowd.

It fills a nice gap though. I play the fuck out of FEH. A single game of FEH takes a minute or two. Playing through a chapter in say Fire Emblem Fates takes 30 minutes to an hour. One of these can be done while standing in line at the grocery store, or when you have just a couple minutes to spare.

play fate: go

the low rank/free cards are all you need to do all the content in the game (people throw up videos on youtube of them only using the low rank cards), so it doesn't even matter if you are horribly unlucky and never get a 4star/5star character with the free pulls the game gives you without using real money

Oddly enough, almost the only game I've played as of late is Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links and that's a mobile game.

I hadn't played any Yu-Gi-Oh before(only watched the show lol) and it was hard to understand at first but I'm much better now.

And all the voiceacting in the game helped me to enjoy the game even when it wasn't going too well.

There is no substance to mobile games. They are good in a few minute spurts, thats about it though. There is the odd game that may hold your attention for longer sessions, but they are usually stuck behind paywalls

Is that really so bad depending on what the paywall is? I mean, people pay lots of money for console and PC games. A couple bucks to fully play a mobile game doesnt seem that bad. Even a couple people here were saying the good ones cost something. But, I guess it depends on what kind of paywall it is...

There's nothing inherent in mobile gaming that keeps it from being good, but the accessibility of the development platform and the explosive popularity of low-commitment F2P time-wasters mean that most developers use it as a dumping ground for half-assed cash grabs. The preponderance of F2P or <$5 games also means most mobile users aren't particularly interested in paying any more than that for a game, so any developer looking to put serious effort into a mobile game is going to struggle to find an audience willing to pay properly for such a project.

Sure, but that's still a very different feeling from being able to complete a full game in that window. Sure, you can play through an FE chapter in 3-4-minute bursts, but when you spend 1 minute out of that time frame reminding yourself what's going on before you can actually play, and have to cut your session short because you know the enemy's turn is going to take more time than you have, you're limiting your enjoyment. In theory, with sleep modes being standard on every handheld console these days, you can stop and start any game at will, but there's something to be said for playing a complete round of a game instead of a quarter of a turn. It just feels more satisfying, even if it's a more shallow game.
