Finally got around to watching the last 3 episodes of Zombieland Saga last night. I think I've already said the issues I had with this show. The last few episodes did nothing nothing to address those and also introduced several more issues in the process, so yeah. The show did have it's good moments here and there, but overall...meh.

Beated Goblin Slayer. It was pretty great entertainment. That first episode is honestly kinda misleading in tone because the rest of the series was nowhere near as dark. The cast is solid even if none of them are super amazing characters. Dwarf was probably the most boring of them. My favorites were definitely Lizard Guy (uh what even is his actual name for the show?), Elf Archer and Goblin Slayer. For supporting characters Totally Not Cu and Guild Girl were probably the best. The world building stayed pretty weak unfortunately, but the tactics and battles were always fun to watch and the 11th episode in particular was just really good looking. Id say the show is an 8/10 for me. Hopefully the next season can make the cast shine more, but if not oh well it should still be good enough to enjoy.

First episode of Dororo was fine I guess. Maybe it's just me but I think it did a poor job of setting up the actual plot and characters. Still, it wasn't bad. I'll give it a few episodes to see if there's a flashback episode that sets all of this up better or something.

I also hated Dororo's voice and checked MAL and he's being voiced by a thirteen-year old girl? I'm certainly not an authority on Japanese voice acting but I thought they just used adult woman for kids since they can actually act.

Barakamon has child voice actors. The two main girls were voiced by 9 year olds, and they did a pretty good job, IMO.

For voice acting in general, I think most VAs start at a pretty young age. Aoi Yuuki started voice acting when she was 11, for example. It's unusual for a VA to debut in their twenties.

Huh, interesting. Maybe it's just this girl not being great then. Usually I can tell it's a girl voicing the young boys but they alter their voice at least enough that I'm able to suspend my disbelief (like, Kuno Misaki voiced Shio in Happy Sugar Life and also a young boy in Lost Song but it was two completely different voices with only hints of familiarity). I heard Dororo and was like 'this sounds exactly like a thirteen-year old girl'.

Well, I hate to say it, but Irozuku did its best to prove me a liar after I implied it was better than Tada Doesn't Fall in Love. I mostly enjoyed it at first, but it got much worse as it went along. The art was really nice, especially the backgrounds. The premise was neat, and the way magic was worked into the world was fairly interesting. Some of the characters were quite good, too. I liked Kohaku a lot, Sho was pretty good, and Asagi was nice. It seemed like there was going to be some cool friendship-based development, but I guess the writer didn't believe in the power of friendship, and decided to make the show about terrible romance instead.

I hated basically every romantic element in the show. The Sho x Hitomi stuff was kind of fun, but it was doomed from the start, so it wasn't as enjoyable as it could be. The Kurumi x Chigusa teasing was super dumb and seemed to exist due to the writer's compulsion to pair every character up with someone else. Kohaku x bookstore dude was gross and I was disgusted by the very idea of it. And, of course, most of all, Yuito x Hitomi was boring and stupid and came to dominate the show completely. Maybe if I liked Yuito better I wouldn't have hated it as much? I dunno. But it felt completely unnatural (the only reason she even liked him is because his pictures magically gave her color back for no good reason), they had no chemistry, and they took all the joy out of the show. Would've been much nicer if it had been more focused on her finding friends and coming to love the world because of it.

The characters were pretty bad in general. Kurumi kind of just annoyed me for some reason (maybe the way she acted when Chigusa was around, I dunno), Yuito obviously sucked, and Hitomi acted like a fucking 12 year old, not someone who was supposed to be 17. She kept whining about not wanting to go back in the last few episodes, and it just made me wonder if she'd ever grow up. Her backstory was really bad, too. We'd already seen two shows in the last year where girls had their mothers leave because they were afraid of their daughter's magic powers (Ancient Magus's Bride and Kakuriyo Bed and Breakfast) - why did we need another? Honestly, I thought it was a stupid plot device in those two series as well. Her reasons for hating magic and being colorblind were total bullshit.

And by the end, the premise of the series was bullshit too. I kept waiting for them to reveal the reason she had to go back in time 60 years, but it never happened. Everything she did was stuff that she could've done in the present too. It just didn't because... the show was written very poorly. What a waste of good ideas.

Between Iroduku and your hatred of Revue Starlight, I'm starting to think that shows that rely heavily on symbolism might not be your favorite thing Mac.

I thought there was friendship development, for example. Her seeing the colors of the fireworks towards the end was representative of that. Love was just a more powerful emotion that unlocked them fully, but they all contributed.

I'm also a sucker for the way Iroduku used fantastical symbolism to explore its theme. Hitomi's color blindness was representative of how a depressed person sees the world. Going back in time was her catalyst for change within the plot because it forced her into an unfamiliar world where she needed to interact with all these new people, rediscovering colors(/happiness) through them. The ultimate message, though, is that the fantastical element wasn't necessary. I was initially disappointed that she didn't seek out anyone in the present, but it made sense once I thought about it. They were special people to her, but people who can become special are everywhere. Once she'd changed her worldview the ending montage showed her going out and finding the exact same thing in her own time. And that's the message the viewer is supposed to come away with.

A few of your complaints feel unfair too. Of course she doesn't want to go home, this is the first time in her life where she's enjoying herself and going home will effectively kill all her new friends from her perspective (and vice versa from theirs). What was the problem with Kohaku eventually winding up with the bookstore guy? They looked five years apart at best and he wasn't a creep at all. Roughly 43 years between then and the birth of her granddaughter means Kohaku probably didn't have her daughter until her 30s, for all we know her and the guy didn't even hook up until after she was done college.

Anyway, I don't want to defend it too much, especially since a lot of this probably comes down to how Hitomi resonated with me (Yuito was fine too, still not sure why you dislike him so much). I'm just sad you didn't enjoy it!

For the record, I generally like shows that rely heavily on symbolism*, and I also hated Iroduku and wasn't that into Revue Starlight. (Though I didn't hate that show, it was reasonably okay.) Or, at least I would say that I don't have an intrinsic negative reaction to the use of symbolism in stuff.

*See: FLCL and Mawaru Penguindrum in my top 10, my general love for Masaaki Yuasa, and probably other stuff I'm not thinking about right now. Also Monogatari I guess, though I actually think for that particular show the symbolism detracts from it in many instances.

Maybe reducing it to just 'symbolism' isn't quite right. I just felt those two shows utilized it in similar ways, both exploring fairly basic (but still resonant) themes that are mostly made interesting by the fantastical lens they're viewed through. For me, half the fun of these shows is examining all the fantasy elements and figuring out what they symbolically represent in the real world.
