What happened during Divinity?

This is the second time I go away for a minute and something weird happens.

He did a quicksave to preserve extra deathfog barrels. Then he had bad RNG with the deathfog on the boat battle, and had to use a glitch with quicksaving to get past the encounter. Unfortunately, he used all his quicksave slots and lost the deathfog barrels. Since those are essential to completing the run, he had to abandon it. He would have started over, but he would have gone over time, and they were already running behind because the Diablo 2 run also ran long.

I was impressed with the faux dual-boxing he was doing during act 1. I know he implied he wouldn't need Lohse further after that, but it was still really cool to watch him go back and forth like that.

Yeah the glitches were definitely pretty cool. Hope he isn't too hard on himself, because while I was watching he was already kind of down on himself a couple of times so I'm sure it didn't get better when the whole thing broke.

I think this was the first run they had to kill so far, which isn't too bad!

Not the highest bar in the world, but still

It originated from a Mario 3 (or World I forget) run and just evolved into people saying it whenever they see anything orb-like/round at all.

GrandPOObear's been doing it for months, atleast. I dunno when it actually became a thing, but they've been doing it off and on all week.

Nah, but it's pretty necessary given the lockout format. Super easy to create a board where neither runner actually gets a Bingo with that.

I was disappointed by TASBot Block. Scribblenauts was kind of dumb too and it probably could've gotten how impressive it is in five minutes. I thought they were just going to do some weird dumb stuff with sandbox mode based on Twitch memes. At least that may end up entertaining.

The AoS run was kind of neat because it was at least somewhat possible to understand what was going on.

Mario was boring and Scribblenauts was a boring concept.

But it was better than last years TASBot block overall in my opinion.

I feel like I'm complaining a lot tonight.

I thought this Lockout Bingo Mario Sunshine sucked. They listed off a bunch of things they had to do in the squares and my first reaction was "What the in the fuck is any of this?" It was impossible to follow and see who could actually conceivably be in a better place than the other except for judging by blocks won (which still doesn't work because you could get others much quicker). If I watched a ton of speed runs for this game, I might have been able to follow along with it. But I have no idea why they thought this was a good thing to do for a marathon like this. I would have much rather preferred a standard race, because at least I could follow that and the commentary could discuss it more than just "Oh, he looks like he's going to do this instead while the other guy is going to do that."

I just don't get it at all. And I feel bad complaining about this, but I was looking forward to Mario Sunshine. And I have enjoyed much of the event overall (except for some shitty time placements on stuff I wanted to see). I think it's just because it's back to back things that are really disappointing.

It's mostly SMW (and its romhacks), where orbs are a type exit goal. Runners have been getting close to their mics and saying "ORB" loudly for years when one gets collected because it generally only happens like once or twice in a run. No idea who started it, but I wanna say it predates GPB being a streamer, or at least an especially big one.

Why did it suddenly take off with the crowd in the middle of Celeste? Who the fuck knows.

It definitely only works if you understand what all the squares really mean

I wasn't saying GPB started it, just that he's been doing it atleast for awhile so it was a thing well before this GDQ

If it were a simpler and more well-known game where the objectives are more understandable than "Get this vaguely specific Shine in this stage" or "Collect x number of these specific collectibles in this stage", I think I might enjoy it more. Like a Zelda game would probably be good for this, but it would have to be a classic for a marathon like this where everyone knows the game already.

shines are objectives; you should understand this*

there are stages in which you can find shines; you should understand this*

you can earn a shine from finding red coins; you should understand this*

you can earn a shine from finding blue coins or from birds; they explained this pretty early and it didn't end up mattering

there are hidden levels and secret levels; they pointed out the latter explicitly a couple of times and the former is intuitive

there are weird things you can do like killing the wiggler or doing something hoverless; you don't need to know what these specifically refer to in order to understand their significance, especially for ones that specify the levels they are in

the tiles were almost all intuitive; you should be able to figure out what "get 9 coins in delfino plaza" or "get 6 red coin shines" means

The only part of this run that you wouldn't grok immediately* is the routing, which you most likely wouldn't know for any random game that they run. This was not difficult to understand at all. What is wrong with you people?

*this assumes you know anything about any 3d mario game. if you've seen ten minutes of mario 64 footage you have the knowledge

Just to mildly voice a complaint I've always had - I hate the TAS block and it stinks they always have a block of it at every GDQ. I get that work goes into putting it together and that people like it and the community is big enough that it makes sense to dedicate some time to it.

But personally it is just so damn boring. I don't care what you can program a computer to do to beat a game. It always seems like one game breaks at some point to, so why not just record a video of it working and show that off at GDQ? It is basically the same thing, anyway.

(Again, no offense to people that like TAS block. I've just always found it the most boring part of every GDQ)

Might I suggest try understanding the context of what is being said instead of being equal parts smug and needlessly assmad over people thinking a run wasn't great.

God bless.

I love TASes (I browse TASvideos a whole bunch) but I don't really like the TAS block of GDQ, it's not really a great environment for it because of the lack of the human element. It works when you reintroduce the human element - by making it funny or so interesting that you can't possibly look away, but regular TASes aren't great for this. I find it interesting that people hype up TAS block so much, I feel like its reputation completely precedes it - people remember the really entertaining arbitrary code execution stuff they've done in the past but they can't really keep topping those forever, and normal TASes are made for a far more niche audience.
