Kenny's title chase was excellent.

Didn't care much once he actually held the belt, but he still had plenty of nice matches.

Will be interesting to see if Becky is the outlier or the start of a trend.

None of the HMs were women and it was apparently a down year for them in NXT.

Don't worry tho, Maki Itoh is the next one.

Kairi and Shayna really had an underrated feud. It's hard to give it its due when you had a huge Ciampa/Gargano thing going on, but Kairi and Shayna honestly beat the shit out of virtually everything on the main roster.

This was my feeling as well and since he captured the title fairly early in the year I didn't vote for him.

Shayna just doesn't get credit she deserves. She's not the best worker but she's come along a lot and her character work is perfect and she's used that to tell great stories in her matches.

Can't really say much about that, to me Hojo's best feuds were against Satomura and Shirai.

Interest went way down once she got saddled with feuds against bad gaijins though.

Glad to hear she's being used well since she left. I hope they don't team her up with Shirai down the line, since they've always been better off as rivals.

Shayna's fun and I probably would've enjoyed her feud with Kairi more had I not seen it basically the same thing done better with Kairi/Satomura a few years ago.

That being said I was close to giving her points.

Sounds bad.

Io's generally done better as the big sister type to her cute little students. Only time it was different was when she was the baby in the triple tails group with her sister and Kana.

Hojo works best with strong hard hitting lesbians.

Alright, here's my full ballot plus some brief explanations.

Wrestler of the Year
1. Will Ospreay
2. WALTER
3. Kazuchika Okada

HM to Kenny here. Had all four of them at #1 at different times and could easily make an argument for each thereof. Eventually settled on the top two because I felt they best represented the overall wrestling environment of 2018, which is to say they had incredible matches in at least a dozen promotions. Will got the #1 nod because he had a ***** match and WALTER didn't. Similarly, I went with Okada over Kenny for having 3 ***** matches where Kenny "only" had two.

Match of the Year
1. Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks @ Strong Style Evolved
2. Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi @ Wrestling Dontaku
3. Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega @ Dominion

Still haven't decided if Lovers/Bucks is the best tag match of all time or if it's barely edged out by 6/9/95. What I know for sure is that it's a best ever example of a tag match where all four competitors feel like individual people with different, definable motivations, which were combined into a masterpiece of storytelling. I could write pages on that match.

Event of the Year
Wrestle Kingdom 12
All In
WWN Mercury Rising

WK12 vs All In was a tough decision due to the latter being pretty unarguably the most important thing to happen in wrestling since WCW folded. Ultimately, though, I got a little more personal enjoyment out of WK.

Feud of the Year
Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
-
-

I'm sure a couple NXT feuds deserved votes here, but I only watched 1 NXT match this year so I had to go with what I know. Okada/Tanahashi was the only feud that really resonated with me in 2018.

Angle of the Year
Golden Lovers Reunion
-
-

The promotions I watch generally aren't angle heavy. The Lovers reunion was genuinely great, though, so it's not like it was #1 purely by default.

Promotion of the Year
NJPW
PWG
wXw

The most consistent of the ones I watch.

Show of the Year
Being the Elite
MLW Fusion
-

The only two I watch regularly that are also good regularly.

Woman of the Year
-
-
-

Had the voting gone a ~week later, I'd have thrown a +3 to Meiko Satomura and a +2 to Kay Lee Ray. Decided to catch up on 2018 women's wrestling since the calendar turned, and they had by far the best work of any woman that I saw.

Tag Team of the Year
Young Bucks
Golden Lovers
Ring Kampf

Said my piece on this already, but I want to get in one final word to say that I did the research and, for the record, the "not really a tag team" Lovers had more aired (i.e. non-house show) 2v2 matches than any 2-man combo of the Undisputed Era last year. Also, HM to Aussie Open, who seem to have astoundingly little buzz on the internet right now.

Best Personality
PAC
Jay White
King

One of the easier categories for me. PAC made Dragon Gate interesting again almost single handedly, White did fantastic once he found his legs, and while his most prevalent feud was too out there for me to throw votes at it elsewhere, Eddie Kingston continued his career of amazing character work in Impact.

Most Improved
Kaito Ishida
Jordan Devlin
Shun Skywalker

I didn't really think any of these guys would get any other votes, but whatever. I thought about putting in Hangman Page, but I always thought he was better than he got credit for.

Best New Character
Bastard PAC
King
-

Nothing to add here.

Best Theme Song
Golden Lovers - Golden Lovers
Hangman Page - Ghost Town Triumph
OGz - Cold Blooded

Cold Blooded would've been a candidate for #1 if not for the random verse about all the high school tail chasing, because it fits Kingston perfectly otherwise.

Worst Angle
Daniel Bryan returns only to immediately enter a feud with Big Cass
Braun Strowman wins tag titles with kid from crowd
Bullet Club splits with The Elite

BC vs Elite had so much squandered potential. The other two just offend me on a very deep level as a wrestling fan.

Worst Wrestler
Nia Jax
Brie Bella
Tanga Loa

Brandi Rhodes should've been #1. Don't know how I forgot her.

Most Embarrassing Fiasco
Crown Jewel
Kenny Omega accidentally books a sex offender on his show
-

Yep.

Least Improved
Brie Bella
Tama Tonga
SANADA

I hope SANADA can figure it out, because he seems to be in line for a push and he took a huge step backward in 2018 IMO.

I ain't gonna lie.

Little miffed Gargano didn't make the top three.

I mean dude just killed it this year. Best matches, best storylines, and I still thinking the ending to Ciampa/Gargano II was the most brilliant ending to a match I've ever seen, and the follow up confirms that.

I gave Cody Rhodes my WotY nod again not because he put on a series of ***** classics but because I really enjoyed his character and promotional work.

He was to my mind probably the most important wrestler anywhere in 2018 and I was actually surprised I was as alone in that opinion as I seemingly am.

I only had three spots, and my boy Ishii wasn't going to vote for himself.

My votes in the category went to Ishii, Pentagon and Kyle O'Reilly purely based on the wrestlers who entertained me the most this year. I know that my criteria for what is good in wrestling is apparently wrong, but for me, those guys tell the best stories in the business, and their characters are always on display in every little nuance of what they do.

Outside of All In, for which the Bucks were equally responsible, what made Cody so important?

Even the Bucks don't claim the Bucks were as important for it.

But beyond that I did mention his character and promotional work. His promotional work in RoH for himself from his Daddy Eats First line to the Big Boss promo he just had a really great year of getting me to care about Cody Rhodes who is still you know....Cody Rhodes.

To me, what you're describing is more of a personality of the year. And Cody was actually on my shortlist for that, but he isn't wrestler of the year for me. I think he was very much "3-star Cody" for most of 2018 in the ring, and it's only his character work and charisma (and business acumen) that makes him worth remembering.

Maybe so but the in ring action is sort of the smallesr part of the equation for me unless the characters personality plays a big role in their in ring decision making a la Bret or Perfect but I'm just as likely to tell you I enjoyed Razor and Lex more than those two during new gen.

You're probably right. It would be hard to convince people that Okada was bank in a year where he dropped the title, or push other BTE guys on a board that has haters for the main ones. And Impact guys would have a hard time. WALTER is too under-the-radar for people who don't follow indie talent. It's tough to overcome the WWE hype machine even in a year as down as this.

I'm pretty convinced the top 3 last year was WALTER, ZSJ and Ospreay. Under that I'd put Kenny, Ibushi, Ishii, Gargano and Dunne. I guess I'd round out 10 with Okada and Bate. So technically there's wwe contracted talent I'd vote for, but nothing main roster and it's because the main roster isn't a show about wrestling and the guys aren't presented as such.
