You have spoken, the votes have been cast, and it's time to see what the best and the worst of 2018 is! I was pleased to see that we had 2 more votes than last year, so we're trending upwards. This year had more blowouts than last year, and despite the number of ties being lower, we also had a lot of awards separated by only a couple points. Every ballot changed the winner in at least 2 categories as I entered them in, so lots of tight races.

The big questions: Will the New Japan dominance of last year hold over to this year? Can the critical popularity of NXT topple any of the established domination? Will WWE take back awards after a terribly lackluster performance last year?

Let's find out!

Least Improved Award
Previous Winners:
2017: Roman Reigns

Third Place: Finn Balor
Second Place: Nia Jax
Winner: Baron Corbin

Dishonorable Mentions: Dean Ambrose, Shinsuke Nakamura, Brie Bella, Tama Tonga, Elias, Braun Strowman, Carmella, Big Cass

There were a lot of multiple vote-getters here, but it was quite clear from the outset that this category has become a referendum on WWE's booking more than anything else. Even though Nia's reign of injury terror came close to taking the top spot, it appears that more than anything else, being boring in the ring will land you more votes. So boring was the interminably long feud between Corbin and Finn that it even caused Finn to leech votes from Corbin and score a second-place spot.

Last year's winner couldn't even rate for this year's Dishonorable Mentions which might say more about the lack of Roman in the back half of the year than anything else. Instead, the focus seemed to be on workers stuck in feuds that people really disliked or found at least divisive.

And then there's Nia.

We saw a lot of discussion about how unsafe Nia is in the ring in the APWTs this year, so it should come as no surprise that she rated fairly highly on this list, but perhaps the surprise is actually that she couldn't eek out a win here. Maybe next year she'll down some more talent and have a fighting chance at that number one spot. This year, however, remains the year of Boring Corbin.

Most Embarassing Wrestling Fiasco
Previous Winners:
2017: Everything TNA

Third Place: Drake Maverick Urination Gimmick
Second Place: James Ellsworth DMs underage girls
Winner: Crown Jewel

Dishonorable Mentions: Roman Reigns' cancer usage, Penis Druids, Kenny Omega accidentally books a sex offender, Enzo Amore rape allegations

This was the biggest blowout on the list. With over 30 points on the second place spot, I don't think we'll ever see this much disparity between first and second place again. Of course, the media circus that enveloped Crown Jewel utterly killed Crown Jewel before it even started. With the death of Jamal Khashoggi fresh in the minds of not only wrestling fans but, more importantly, his fellow journalists around the world, Crown Jewel became a focal point for corporate greed overcoming moral integrity. And Vince McMahon, being that titan of moral integrity he is, completely shocked the world by putting oil blood money over ethics. Add to it the return of Racistmania and the utter purchase of Shawn Michaels' backbone by the Saudi Arabian royal family, and you had an absolute mess. Perhaps it was the Best Mess in the World.

It should be pointed out that the TNA shenanigans which normally plague the APWTs was surprisingly absent from the year's discussion and also the votes. Not a single vote for Impact-related issues was recorded. Quite a turnaround for the normally troubled management of a flagging company.

Instead, we decided to focus on a frighteningly disturbing Twitter scandal that sadly received very little play in the topics and peeing. Hopefully they will choppy choppy the peepee story in 2019 so we don't have to suffer through any further Nation of Urination segments.

Worst Wrestler
Previous Winners:
2017: Jinder Mahal

Third Place: Brie Bella
Second Place: Baron Corbin
Winner: Nia Jax

Dishonorable Mentions: Alisha Edwards, Undertaker, Shane McMahon

This was another category where the top and the bottom saw wide disparity. That's partially why there are so few Dishonorable Mentions this year; despite a larger field than the previous two categories, votes were spread out across a wide field and only six people were able to score noticeable points in this category.

Nia Jax ran up an injury list that looked like the casualty list to a good issue of Suicide Squad, and perhaps that's a fair comparison. After all, getting in the ring with her appeared to be suicide. From the Becky Lynch fiasco that got the topic's blood boiling to running down half of RAW like a Mack truck, Jax was clearly the a "polarizing figure in sports entertainment" who was able to curry that X-Pac heat like it was dust on a black static cling dress.

Then you have the Least Improved victor Baron Corbin. Jax and Corbin clearly stood head and shoulders above the rest this year in terms of the those dubious distinctions no one wanted to win. And the name of the game of course was boring once again. Followed up with Brie Bella, another hitwoman who seemed out to destroy Ruby Riott like she had said something about Brie's own mother, this was not a banner year for the women of WWE in this category.

I'll make a small note that Alisha Edwards is an absolutely terrible wrestler and actress. She should never get near a ring ever again. The worst thing Eddie Edwards did in his career was marry her, and I'm glad she at least took the top Dishonorable Mention spot.

WWE decided that rather than use him as a midcard or upper midcard guy after building him for a year, they said, "Fuck this shit," and he's facing off against Heath Slater and Rhyno and teaming with Alicia Fox. Oof.

WWE cutting his momentum was fine and in fact smart. Cutting it to the extent where you're booking him pretty much identically to how he was booked before his title run cheapens the entire product in a lot of ways though. A former WWE Title holder's absolute floor should be as a strong midcarder. Even if you have no intention of pushing him again keeping credibility to the title and using him as a midcard stepping stone is ideal.

Jinder was still booked as a midcarder until like halfway through this year. There was no need to keep burying him even further into a low card comedy role. That guy who beat Randy Orton and former champion has some inherent value if you allow it to.

I honestly would've liked to have seen what could been started between Jinder Mahal and Bobby Lashley with Bobby being the barely-hinged smiling-faced super-sarcastic guy taking the piss out of heel comedy. Like, I don't think I've been intrigued at all by Bobby before or since then, and the whole thing died completely when Kevin Owens attacked out of nowhere a week after he quit thereby ruining THREE things deadstop.

And I'm serious. Bobby "My Man"-ning a very confused Jinder who is not used to people going with his flow? I would've liked to have seen more. Did they even have a match?

My initial inclination was to use "Worst Wrestler" as "Most Overpushed," because in reality the deserving winners of "Worst Wrestler" are just indie doofuses that no one cares about, but upon reflection I decided there's plenty of actively bad talent that fit the bill just fine and deserve recognition for that.

Worst Angle
Previous Winners:
2017: House of Horrors

Third Place: WE are the Authority
Second Place: Dean Ambrose turns on Seth Rollins after Roman Reigns' cancer revelations

Dishonorable Mentions: Baron Corbin is made an authority figure, Shawn Michaels' return, BEST IN THE WORLD, Big Cass beats up a little person

As with last year, the truly worst of the worst came from WWE. It appears that the voters themselves are actually somewhat to blame, as third place points out. After all, we are officially the bookers in WWE now, so we have no one to make a scapegoat but ourselves. Can you believe that all of these terrible angles are our fault? It blows my mind how bad we were at this whole booking thing.

Of course, second place was really an angle that was the victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was necessarily the concept of the SHIELD split so much as the idea that it was the follow-up to a heartfelt real world collision with the simulated reality of WWE. Roman Reigns' sudden exit from WWE was so moving and impactful, it felt inappropriate to some of the voters that the death of the Shield fall so quickly afterwards. Sometimes, timing is everything.

But the top spot went to the utterly, utterly terrible crossdressing mishmash mess of garbled dialogue and confusing Vince-humor that was the debut of Bobby Lashley's sisters. It was Russo-meets-New-Generation bad, chock full of everything that makes being a wrestling fan embarassing. It certainly is a worthy successor to the title of Worst Angle, following in the House of Horrors match as a headscratchingly jumbled pile of terrible writing.

Thank goodness we didn't book THAT one.

Previous Winners:
2017: Phenomenal - AJ Styles theme
2016: Glorious Domination - Bobby Roode theme
2015: Celtic Invasion - Becky Lynch Theme
2014: Sierra Hotel Indigo Echo Lima Delta - SHIELD Theme Song
2013: Patriot - Jack Swagger Theme Song
2012: Off the Chain (orchestral) Bobby Roode theme song

Third Place: "Undisputed" - Undisputed Era
Second Place: "Top ONE Percent" - EC3
Winner: "One and Only" - Ricochet

Honorable Mentions: "Rebel Heart" - Johnny Gargano, "Shadows of a Setting Sun" - Shinsuke Nakamura, Golden Lovers Theme

I love this category because it usually is a referendum of how hyped people are to see someone enter the arena. However, this year was really dominated by new themes that made a splash rather than fondly regarded themes that were pervasive over the course of the year.

In third place, the utterly excellent Undisputed track was propped up most likely entirely on the back of the greatest air guitarist of our generation. Kyle O'Reilly has proven to be utterly adept at playing the guitar lick that kicks in around twenty seconds into the theme. Crowds also love to mimic Adam Cole's "boom" as he enters the ring. Overall, the performance couples with the theme well and engages audiences every single time.

EC3's theme wasn't in the top 1% of votes this time around, but that didn't stop it from stealing second place. A track that actually steals chords and even some style from Vince McMahon's classic "No Chance in Hell", EC3's opening line and subsequent chorus section has becoming a memorable staple of his entrance. It certainly was a worthy successor to "Trouble" in TNA.

But the top spot could only belong to the one and only theme of Ricochet. The lighting, the music, and the charisma of Ricochet himself all fuse together to create a memorable little entrance that hopefully will translate well to 205 Live when he inevitable ends up there.

Best New Character
Previous Winners:
2017: Hiromu Takahashi
2016: <inactive>
2015: Asuka
2014: Bray Wyatt

Third Place: Scarlett Bordeaux
Second Place: The Man, Becky Lynch
Winner: The NEW Daniel Bryan

Honorable Mentions: Rowdy Ronda Rousey, Crazy Eddie Edwards, Bastard PAC, The Man of the Hour Lio Rush

In what was an extremely surprising result, Daniel Bryan snuck by Becky Lynch with a two-point victory. Surely in what is proof that the audience is extremely FICKLE, the definite shoo-in was unable to claim the #1 spot thanks to the militant vegan who enjoys quoting his friends like Isaac Asimov before low-blowing redneck flat Earthers. In fact, perhaps I should just let this victory speak for itself because I'm using up precious electricity to type out this wasteful post. Shame on me and my consumeristic sensibilities.

Becky Lynch certainly proved herself to be one of the best characters of the year, although perhaps people felt her character was a logical progression rather than a complete gimmick change. Between her promos destroying "Ronnie", her reaching out to Conor McGregor on Twitter with actual success, and her excellent run with Charlotte, Lynch really showed her powerful acting chops and undeniable charisma.

In a distant but respectable third place was the bizarre and magical debut of Scarlett Bordeaux in Impact. In what looked like a sexist throwback to the Attitude Era at first, Scarlett has sense proven to be a mystical guru (unlike the one Matt Sydal sought out) who can retool and rework anyone on the roster. Her motives are fairly mysterious and yet she's both wholesome and sinister at the same time. And the fact that she can make smoke and music appear anywhere as if by magic is just the absolute best. The year-end revelation that she can teleport (allegedly) just further enhanced the legend of this absolutely ridiculous character.

Don't get me wrong, Becky absolutely should have won but losing to the clear #2 isn't super egregious.

I mean the biggest problem is that while New Daniel Bryan U Deluxe is it got nowhere near the crossover appeal that The Man's got, and he hasn't killed it on Twitter the way she has. Like if it was exclusively WWE TV I might even lean New Daniel Bryan Wii but Becky crushed him everywhere else.

Wow, surprised Aleister Black didnt get theme honors!

And as far as the Ambrose/Rollins/Reigns? I thought the betrayal that night was brilliant and shocking and it really really really sucks that they completely dropped the ball afterwards. It could've been white hot blood feud, but it just... ugh, the subsequent weeks and the doctor thing and that match... god.

They could've used so much to fuel that rivalry. Hell, you could make Ambrose a face, A FACE, if next week or weeks later when hes sick of Rollins' shit and unloads on him, that he did what he did to protect The SHIELD and his brother Roman from Seth. When he went on the shelf with an injury after the SHIELD reunited, it didnt take more than a week or two for Rollins to replace him as tag team partner. DISRESPECT!

So when Roman left, he knew what he had to do. He had to split up the SHIELD once and for all because he wasnt gonna let anyone take Roman's place like he was replaced.

Boom.

Third Place: Velveteen Dream
Second Place: Ronda Rousey
Winner: PCO

Honorable Mentions: Daniel Bryan, Jay White, KM, Buddy Murphy

In razor-thin margin, PCO's four first-place votes trumped Ronda's mix of lower placements in order to steal away the top of the category. What a fantastic run PCO has had on the indies this year. Especially after his awesome hard-hitting match with WALTER at Joey Janela's Spring Break, PCO proved to be a massive darling to hardcore fans. After years of dormancy that followed a middling career in WWF and WCW, this middle-aged midcarder blasted from the past and captured the imagination with his rough, brutal tactics. Now part of what appears to be a major faction going into ROH's 2019, the future burns bright for the former Fabulous Canadian.

Ronda Rousey was the top vote-getter for the WWE roster, and I have to disagree with the votes. Ronda started this year, and she didn't demonstrate any more or less skill than she had from her first match and promo. She came in at a high level; I'm not sure why people think she's improved from having one of the best matches at Mania. Her first match already set her up at the top of the heap. However, I'm just the guy who records the votes, so maybe I shouldn't judge.

Velveteen Dream really showed the improvement last year, but his run this year continued to impress and amaze, including a FIVE STAR MATCH at Wrestlemania weekend's Takeover. He seems like the kind of talent who will go far on the main roster when he gets there.

Third Place: Shinsuke Nakamura
Second Place: Daniel Bryan
Winner: Becky Lynch

Honorable Mentions: Konnan, Kevin Owens, Eddie Edwards, Cody Rhodes, Velveteen Dream

Daniel Bryan may have stolen the New Character category (and I firmly believe that was simply due to including "New" in his character name), but Becky Lynch dominated in the Personality category. What a powerhouse of charisma Smackdown proved to be! Sweeping the top three spots, all three characters were designed to be heels, but instead proved to be fan favorites. This really proves just what a sad state of affairs RAW has become. Smackdown does put a premium on characterization that RAW doesn't. Becky Lynch is a prime example of letting someone loose with a new character and seeing where it takes them. Daniel Bryan, too, reminds me a lot of an Attitude Era character. There's a definite piece of Daniel Bryan here, but it's dialed up to 11. However, being grounded in reality allows a certain degree of honesty to shine through. Nakamura's character was very Nakamura - snotty, sarcastic, cat-like in many respects. Despite a goofy gimmick in the ring, outside of the ring he delivered some extremely amusing promos, and subverted the sort of standard racism Vince McMahon normally would find amusing.

Overall, Smackdown proved to be the better brand, at least in terms of character creation.
